Ceiling effects in the EOSQ-24 may limit its ability to assess treatment outcomes in early-onset scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: The 24-item Early-Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) is a condition-specific instrument to assess health-related quality of life in children with early-onset scoliosis (EOS). Previous studies have raised concerns regarding ceiling effects, i.e. clustering of scores at the upper limit, which may reduce the ability of the EOSQ-24 to detect clinical improvements. METHODS: A structured review of published clinical studies reporting EOSQ-24 scores was performed. Data were standardized to a 0-100 scale. For each domain weighted mean scores, standard deviations (SD), and ceiling eff

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP): Are We There Yet?

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) affects preterm infants worldwide, involving abnormal development of retinal blood vessels associated with supplemental oxygen use in neonatal care. Although there have been strides in identifying at-risk infants, implementing early screening, updating disease criteria through the International Classification of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ICROP), and developing new therapies, ROP remains a leading cause of preventable blindness. As preterm birth survival rates rise, the incidence of ROP continues to increase and is projected to rise even in countries with abun

Evaluation of the effect of palatoplasty on the quality of life and speech outcomes in patients with velocardiofacial syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Children diagnosed with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) suffer from various disabilities. Palatal abnormalities, as well as speech and language impairment, adversely affect a child's quality of life (QoL) and are some of the most distressing aspects for the parents of these children. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to explore the effect of palatoplasty on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and speech outcomes in children with VCFS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study recruited 20 patients (N = 20) with VCFS and connected speech, aged 3 years or older, having either undia

A Scoping Review of the Complementary Feeding Practices and Early Eating Experiences of Children With Down Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Children with Down syndrome may experience more challenges in their early feeding and may be introduced to complementary foods comparatively later than typically developing (TD) children. This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesize the existing literature that describes feeding problems and early eating experiences relating to the period of complementary feeding for children with Down syndrome. METHODS: Scopus, PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, and PsycInfo were searched. Journal articles published between January 1991 and June 2022 that reported on the complementary feedin

Health-Related Quality of Life in Kindergarten Children with Developmental Language Disorder: Child-Mother Agreement.

Language disorders are associated with difficulties in various aspects of life, such as academic and social functioning, resulting in impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Most studies use a parent proxy method to assess HRQoL. Since HRQoL refers to the subjective experience of an individual, it is necessary to assess children's perspectives along with their mothers'. The aim of the current study is to explore HRQoL rating agreement between children and their mothers, since the literature on other conditions suggests that discrepancies seem to reflect their different perspectives. Biallelic ANGPT2 loss-of-function causes severe early-onset non-immune hydrops fetalis.

BACKGROUND: Hydrops fetalis, a pathological fluid accumulation in two or more body compartments, is aetiologically heterogeneous. We investigated a consanguineous family with recurrent pregnancy loss due to severe early-onset non-immune hydrops fetalis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Whole exome sequencing in four fetuses with hydrops fetalis revealed that they were homozygous for the angiopoietin-2 (ANGPT2) variant Chr8 (GRCh37/Hg19): 6385085T>C, NM_001147.2:c.557A>G. The substitution introduces a cryptic, exonic splice site predicted to result in loss of 10 nucleotides with subsequent shift in readin

Association between grandparent co-residence, socioeconomic status and dental caries among early school-aged children in Japan: A population-based prospective study.

Globally many children are living with grandparents, and it has been suggested that grandparent co-residence may be associated with dental caries in infants and toddlers possibly through passive parenting style, accompanied by children's cariogenic behaviors such as feeding sugary sweets. However, little is known about this association in schoolchildren, adjusted for socioeconomic status. Therefore, this study investigates the association between grandparent co-residence, socioeconomic status, and dental caries among schoolchildren. All caregivers of first-grade children (age 6-7 years) in Ada

Effectiveness of a school-based intervention to prevent child sexual abuse-Evaluation of the German IGEL program.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a problem with severe consequences for victimized children. A variety of interventions have been developed and implemented over the last decades to prevent CSA. However, most of them have not been systematically evaluated to determine their effectiveness. The IGEL program is a school-based intervention to prevent CSA in third-grade primary school children in Germany. METHODS: This study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design, in which almost 300 children and their parents from eight intervention and four control schools were surveyed three time

A Genotype-First Approach for Clinical and Genetic Evaluation of Wolcott-Rallison Syndrome in a Large Cohort of Iranian Children With Neonatal Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Wolcott-Rallison syndrome (WRS) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive condition, characterized by permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus (PNDM) associated with skeletal dysplasia, growth retardation and liver dysfunction. WRS is caused by biallelic mutations in the gene encoding eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2alpha kinase 3 (EIF2AK3). METHODS: As part of a comprehensive study on clinical and genetic investigation of neonatal diabetes in an Iranian population, 60 unrelated Iranian subjects referred with PNDM were analyzed. All the probands were screened for KCNJ11, INS,

Longitudinal Associations Between Preschool Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder Symptoms and Neural Reactivity to Monetary Reward During Preadolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Reward-processing abnormalities are thought to be a key feature of various psychiatric disorders and may also play a role in disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), a new diagnosis in DSM-5. In the current study, we used event-related potentials (ERP) sensitive to monetary gains (i.e., the reward positivity [RewP]) and losses (i.e., the N200) to examine associations between symptoms of DMDD during early childhood and later reward processing during preadolescence. METHODS: To assess early emerging DMDD symptoms in a large longitudinal community sample (n=373) of 3-year old ch

Genomic imprinting in the human placenta.

With the launch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development/National Institutes of Health Human Placenta Project, the anticipation is that this often-overlooked organ will be the subject of much intense research. Compared with somatic tissues, the cells of the placenta have a unique epigenetic profile that dictates its transcription patterns, which when disturbed may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. One major class of genes that is dependent on strict epigenetic regulation in the placenta is subject to genomic imprinting, the parent-of-origin-dependent monoall

Parent-reported benefits of flupirtine in juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (Batten disease; CLN3) are not supported by quantitative data.

Juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (JNCL; CLN3 disease; Batten disease) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease of childhood that typically presents at school age with vision loss followed by progressive cognitive decline, motor dysfunction, seizures, and behavior problems. No therapy has been shown to slow the progression of disease in JNCL patients, and all current treatments are symptomatic. Flupirtine has been shown in vitro to reduce apoptosis in CLN3 lymphocytes. Based on that preclinical study, several children with JNCL were given flupirtine by their parents. The purpo
