Parents of children with special needs often face persistent mental health challenges. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has shown promise via the psychological flexibility framework, but reported effects have been heterogeneous. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials of ACT delivered to parents of children with special needs that reported standardized effect sizes for parental anxiety. Eleven studies (n = 768) met the inclusion criteria. A fixed-effects meta-analysis revealed that ACT significantly alleviated parental

BACKGROUND: This study examined parental stress indicators during outpatient pediatric surgery and whether intraoperative text messaging could alleviate stress.
METHODS: This randomized trial assigned parents of children aged 6 months to 6 years undergoing minor outpatient surgery to an intervention group, receiving standardized intraoperative text messages, or a control group without messages. Both groups received a postoperative phone call. Stress was assessed using salivary cortisol, heart rate, heart rate variability, and subjective ratings at multiple perioperative time points.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic alliance (TA) has been widely used to explain variations in psychotherapy, but its role in pediatric speech-language therapy remains underexplored.
AIMS: This longitudinal study examined whether the TA between speech-language therapists (SLTs) and parents of children undergoing speech-language intervention predicted therapeutic outcomes and whether it moderated the effects of parental psychological factors.
METHODS: Forty-one parents of children aged 3-12 years and 12 SLTs participated in a 12-week intervention. SLTs rated child disorder severity at onset, TA afte

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric clinicians routinely screen for secondhand smoke exposure and are uniquely poised to support caregivers. Infancy is a critical period of exposure and caregiver behavior change. We explored clinician perspectives regarding contingency management (CM), an evidence-based smoking cessation intervention not previously used in pediatric primary care for infant parents/caregivers.
METHODS: The sample included clinicians/staff at a Federally Qualified Health Center and nursery in the Northeastern United States. We used sequential mixed methods with survey and qualitative methodol

BACKGROUND: Effective parent-staff partnerships are essential for facilitating adequate service delivery in residential care for adults with (mild) intellectual disabilities. However, this partnership is often evaluated as being suboptimal. Whilst previous research has focused on parental perspectives, the present study explores support staff's experiences regarding effective partnerships.
METHOD: Eleven support staff members were interviewed using a semi-structured format. The results were analysed using thematic analysis.
RESULTS: Four themes were identified: (1) Acknowledging the value of

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric obesity (OB) treatments show small effects and high dropout rates, potentially due to low motivation in participating families. Motivation prior to a weight management program is referred to as "readiness to change" (RTC). Understanding RTC is key to improving outcomes. Previous studies observed determinants for RTC, but results are heterogenous and data about adolescents' RTC are lacking.
METHODS: Baseline data of the STARKIDS trial were used to find determinants of RTC in (a) adolescents (n = 125), (b) their caretakers (n = 185), and (c) caretakers of younger children (

BACKGROUND: Parents of undiagnosed children (POUC) experience significant psychosocial challenges, including anxiety, uncertainty, and isolation, that stem from parenting medically complex children while facing obstacles throughout the diagnostic journey. Despite these well-described challenges, a mental health intervention designed to meet the unique needs of POUC, which is necessary to promote the psychological and overall wellbeing of this population, does not exist. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has proven effective in a wide range of populations and shows promise for POUC. With

Background: Bereaved parents face substantial mental health risks. In addition to seeking help from mental health professionals, bereaved parents often adopt their own grief coping strategies. Among these, some Chinese parents who have lost their only child (shidu parents) adopt a unique, culturally shaped coping strategy known as 'living on behalf of the child.'Methods: A purposive sampling method was used in this study to invite shidu parents who were living on behalf of the child to participate in interviews. In total, 10 interviewees were included in the analysis; specifically, 8 participa

This research is an update of the systematic review conducted by Ni Chobhthaigh and Duffy in 2019, which included data up to 2017. The updated review covers a later period (2018-2023) and follows the updated PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The aim is to identify new evidence regarding the effectiveness of psychological interventions with adoptive parents on the well-being of their adopted children, and to provide an updated profile of the characteristics of effective interventions in this field. The literature review was conducted across two relevant databases and grey literature sources. INTRODUCTION: Prior research by Temple et al. has shown that opposite-sex parent-child dyads demonstrate superior weight outcomes compared to same-sex dyads, but the analyses for all dyads were underpowered. This study replicates and extends those findings in a larger dataset of families provided with Family-Based Behavioural Treatment (FBT), examining whether dyad sex composition predicts change in zBMI and clinically meaningful weight outcomes at two-year follow-up.
METHODS: Mega-analysis of individual participant data pooled from 9 randomised FBT trials conducted between 1981 and 2013, wit

INTRODUCTION: Advances in cardiology and cardiac surgery have significantly improved survival rates among children with CHD, but these gains come with the need for long-term care that heavily involves parents. Understanding their life situation is essential for delivering effective family-centred and holistic healthcare. The study aimed to assess the life situation of parents of children with CHD in relation to sociodemographic factors and to explore their sources of support, emotional experiences, and the role of spirituality in coping.

BackgroundBehavioral Parent Training (BPT) Programs are highly efficacious but are limited due to high attrition. We sought to reduce attrition through modifications to the intensity level (i.e., number of hours per week) with which services are delivered.MethodsWe conducted a nonrandomized, parametric study of three distinct treatment intensity levels (high, medium, and low) with 116 participants with clinically significant challenging behavior and their caregivers. We examined rates of attrition, within appointment behavior reduction, and pre-post changes in standardized measures across all

BACKGROUND: Acute childhood fever can lead to parental anxiety which contributes to the overcrowding of pediatric emergency care. Mobile health (mHealth) applications offer support to empower caregivers. Real-world evidence regarding usage disparities and their actual impact on user empowerment remains scarce.
OBJECTIVE: This observational study investigates the sociodemographic determinants of mHealth usage and evaluates its effect on parental confidence as parent-reported outcome measure (PROM).
METHODS: A FeverApp registry data analysis was conducted. An ecological momentary assessment to

Attention regulation is foundational to early development and underpins the emergence of executive function. The present study draws on the Learning by Observing and Pitching In framework to investigate how Bangladeshi parents in a resource-constrained urban community scaffold infants' attention and emerging executive function. To contextualize Bangladeshi parent-infant interactions, we included a descriptive comparison with families of mid-socioeconomic status from Boston, United States. We coded parent-infant interactions at 12 months along two dimensions of parental scaffolding (modality: e

BACKGROUND: Millions of people have taken Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) DNA ancestry tests to learn more about their ethnic ancestry and family history. A small but growing body of research has noted that these DTC DNA ancestry tests raise challenging ethical, psychosocial, and resource-related issues that have not been adequately considered nor discussed. One key issue concerns a "Not Parent Expected" (NPE) discovery, in which a user suddenly and unexpectedly learns from these tests that an assumed parent (typically the father) is not a biological parent. Such news can negatively affect mental hea

BACKGROUND: Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) is a home visiting program designed for parents of children between birth and 48 months of age who have experienced early adversity. Previous research demonstrated that ABC enhances parental sensitivity and reduces parental intrusiveness through both in-person and hybrid delivery methods (Roben et al.in Child Development 88(5):1447–1452, 2017, https://doi.org/10.1111/cdev.12898 ; Schein et al. in Child Maltreatment28(1):24–33, 2023, https://doi.org/10.1177/10775595211072516 ). This phenomenological study examines 20 bereaved couples from the "Iron Swords" War in Israel (who received letters from fallen sons instructing them to "celebrate life" instead of mourning. Through in-depth dyadic interviews, the "Emotional Mandate" was analyzed-a process where the deceased's request becomes a rigid moral obligation divesting parents of emotional autonomy and creating "conditional mourning". Findings reveal a "forced joy paradox" generating somatic dissonance between required external actions and internal silenced pain. The "dyadic effect" highlights a gender gap: fathers int

No study has yet examined the convergence between the AMBIANCE-Brief's assessment of disrupted behavior and the full AMBIANCE version and its associations with child attachment and parental sensitivity among parents reported for maltreatment. Based on a sample of 71 parents and their young children receiving child protection or community services in Canada due to maltreatment or elevated risk for maltreatment, this study showed a moderate convergence between scores of the brief and full versions of the AMBIANCE, but the correspondence between the disrupted/non-disrupted classifications was wea

INTRODUCTION: Materialistic value orientation, defined as the long-term endorsement of values, goals, and beliefs centered on the importance of acquiring money and possessions that convey status, has been associated with various negative developmental outcomes among adolescents. However, the formation of materialistic values remains insufficiently understood, and research examining the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and materialistic value orientation is limited, particularly among Chinese adolescents. This study examined the relationships among ACEs, parent-child att
