Health Correlates of Abuse History and Moderating Effect of Parenting Stress for Mothers with Mental Disorders.

Parenting stress is common and may lead to worsening health, particularly in the context of other risk factors such as mental disorders or a history of abuse. This study investigated how parenting-related stress impacts the effect of abuse experiences on health among mothers with mental health disorders. Survey data was analyzed from 172 predominantly Hispanic mothers receiving outpatient behavioral health services. Most (80.2%) mothers had experienced abuse. Those reporting childhood abuse had 3.82 greater odds of experiencing abuse in adulthood. Findings demonstrated worse health outcomes am

Parent perceptions of dental care providers' role in human papillomavirus prevention and vaccine advocacy.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection and is responsible for most anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. Dental care providers can be advocates for vaccine uptake, yet little is known about patients' perceptions of the role of dental care providers in HPV education and prevention. METHODS: Parents of adolescents aged 9 through 17 years were recruited from the Minnesota State Fair to survey their awareness and knowledge of the HPV vaccine. Parents were also surveyed about their attitudes toward and comfort in receiving HPV vaccination recommend

Parental incarceration and youth tobacco product use: Implications for prevention and the e-cigarette epidemic.

PURPOSE: Youth smokers have high rates of adverse childhood experiences, and particularly parental incarceration (PI). In Minnesota, 16% of youth have experienced PI, but 55% of daily smokers report PI. However, no research has examined how PI relates to a range of tobacco products, which is critical considering the current e-cigarette epidemic. There is also limited research on protective factors for tobacco use among youth with PI. METHODS: Data came from 2016 Minnesota Student Survey (N = 111,091); 85% of Minnesota schools participated. We assessed 30-day use of cigarettes, non-cigarette c

Parental corporal punishment and child anxiety in China: The moderating role of HPA-axis Activity.

BACKGROUND: Although negative associations between parental corporal punishment and child anxiety are well-documented, the potential moderators of these associations are not well characterized. Contemporary developmental perspectives suggest that biological vulnerability may influence the degree to which the environment affects child development. Thus, this study investigated the moderating role of one potential physiological marker, HPA-axis activity, in the relations between both maternal and paternal corporal punishment and child anxiety in China. METHODS: Participants were 158 elementary

Parental assessment of pain control following pediatric adenotonsillectomy: Do opioids make a difference?

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative prescribing of opioids following pediatric adenotonsillectomy can have negative consequences including unnecessary opioid exposure and potential for respiratory depression. While guidelines from The American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery recommend treatment of post adenotonsillectomy pain using acetaminophen and ibuprofen, many providers continue to prescribe opioids and may do so, in part with concern for parental dissatisfaction with post-operative analgesia. Our aim was to determine whether a post-operative prescription for opioids affects parenta

Acceptability and feasibility of a parent-targeted dietary intervention in young survivors of childhood cancer: "Reboot".

BACKGROUND: Assess the acceptability and feasibility of delivering Reboot, a telephone dietary intervention to parents of pediatric cancer survivors. The research question asks whether tailored dietary support is acceptable and feasible to deliver to parents of young cancer survivors who have recently completed cancer treatment? PROCEDURE: Pre-post study. Nineteen parents of pediatric cancer survivors (aged 2-13 years) in remission, who had received cancer treatment at a tertiary children's hospital, less than 5 years prior to the intervention. Participants received four weekly 45-min telepho

Inpatient postoperative undesirable side effects of analgesics management: a pediatric patients and parental perspective.

INTRODUCTION: The use of analgesics for the treatment of post-operative pain is common, however, such medications are known to have potential side effects. These undesirable secondary effects can have an important impact on patients and impede their recovery. OBJECTIVES: A review of the literature was conducted in order to gain a better understanding of the challenges confronted by pediatric patients in the acute post-operative period in terms of the side effects of analgesics. METHODS: An online search of keywords (pediatric, analgesic, pain medication, side effects, adverse effects, nausea

Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial of a child and parent mindfulness intervention for pediatric venipuncture.

Children commonly undergo painful needle procedures. Unmanaged procedural pain can have short- and long-term consequences, including longer procedure times, greater distress at future procedures, and vaccine hesitancy. While parent behaviors are one of the strongest predictors of children's response to acute pain, pediatric procedural pain management interventions focus almost exclusively on the child. Further, existing parent-involved pediatric pain management interventions typically fail to improve child self-reported pain during painful procedures. The current protocol offers the first rand

The effectiveness of parental distraction during children's acute pain: The moderating effect of socioeconomic status.

BACKGROUND: Parental responses to children's pain shape how children interpret and cope with pain symptoms through parental modelling and operant conditioning. Evidence suggests that parental distraction is effective in reducing children's acute pain responses, but findings are inconsistent across pain tolerance, intensity and unpleasantness, and are limited to samples of primarily middle and upper-middle class families. Although socioeconomically disadvantaged families may have fewer psychological resources to cope with pain, no studies have examined whether the utility of parent distraction

Parental perceptions and expectations concerning speech therapy-related cleft care - a qualitative study.

AIMS: Speech (i.e., resonance, nasal airflow and articulation) is one of the primary outcomes in individuals with a cleft of the palate with or without a cleft of the lip (CP ± L). Therefore, it is highly important to obtain information regarding parental perceptions and expectations concerning speech therapy-related cleft care. Literature investigating these parental perspectives is scarce. The present study investigated perceptions and expectations of parents of children with CP ± L concerning (outcomes of) speech therapy. METHODS: Eleven parents of nine children with CP ± L were recruited

Parental Coronavirus Disease 2019 Testing of Hospitalized Children: Rethinking Infection Control in a Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) poses a challenge to infection control within hospital systems. Asymptomatic children and their caretakers carry the risk of silently spreading infection in pediatric emergency departments and hospital units. Our current knowledge is evolving, and infection control measures are frequently changing depending on new emerging data. METHODS: We conducted a point-prevalence study to assess SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR) results of hospitalized children, their asymptomatic caretakers, and caretaker-child test

Parental SIRT1 Overexpression Attenuate Metabolic Disorders Due to Maternal High-Fat Feeding.

Maternal obesity can contribute to the development of obesity and related metabolic disorders in progeny. Sirtuin (SIRT)1, an essential regulator of metabolism and stress responses, has recently emerged as an important modifying factor of developmental programming. In this study, to elucidate the effects of parental SIRT1 overexpression on offspring mechanism, four experimental groups were included: (1) Chow-fed wild-type (WT)-dam × Chow-fed WT-sire; (2) High-fat diet (HFD)-fed WT-dam × Chow-fed WT-sire; (3) HFD-fed hemizygous SIRT1-transgenic (Tg)-dam × Chow-fed WT-sire; and (4) HFD-fed WT da

Parenting, mental health and economic pathways to prevention of violence against children in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Parenting programs based on social learning theory have increasing empirical evidence for reducing violence against children. Trials are primarily from high-income countries and with young children. Globally, we know little about how parenting programs work to reduce violence, with no known studies in low or middle-income countries (LMICs). This study examines mechanisms of change of a non-commercialized parenting program, Parenting for Lifelong Health for Teens, designed with the World Health Organization and UNICEF. A cluster randomized trial showed main effects on parenting and

Parent mental health and neurodevelopmental outcomes of children hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit.

High-risk infants hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) often receive life-saving interventions during a critical period of development, when their brain is highly sensitive to both positive and negative environmental factors. It is no surprise that this time is particularly challenging for families. In fact, parents of hospitalized newborns are likely to experience clinically-significant symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. These symptoms have the potential to impact the nature and quality of the early parent-infant relationship and can lead to long-term problematic

Use of language in the medical decision-making process for biologic therapy: Youth and parent perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Youth with chronic illnesses and their parents make complex medical decisions and also need to develop medical decision-making skills for transition of care to adult care. The use of inclusive (e.g. 'we decided …') and exclusive (e.g. 'they decided …') language in youth and parents' medical decision-making experiences provides insights into perceptions of engagement. This study assessed youth and parents' perceptions of engagement in medical decision-making about biologic therapy. METHODS: This exploratory mixed-methods secondary analysis of semistructured interview data included

What leads to coordinated attention in parent-toddler interactions? Children's hearing status matters.

Coordinated attention between children and their parents plays an important role in their social, language, and cognitive development. The current study used head-mounted eye-trackers to investigate the effects of children's prelingual hearing loss on how they achieve coordinated attention with their hearing parents during free-flowing object play. We found that toddlers with hearing loss (age: 24-37 months) had similar overall gaze patterns (e.g., gaze length and proportion of face looking) as their normal-hearing peers. In addition, children's hearing status did not affect how likely parents

Parental influence is the most important predictor of child's orthodontic treatment demand in a preadolescent age.

The aim was to explore the predictive value of objective treatment need, impaired quality of life, and parental influence on orthodontic treatment demand in preadolescents and adolescents. A secondary goal was to validate 16-item Child Perceptions Questionnaire for the 11-14 year age group (CPQ11-14): item-impact and stepwise-regression short-forms. A convenience sample of 287 participants (55% female) was used for validation. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and convergent validity were evaluated. Predictors of treatment demand were explored in 197 orthodontic patients: 93 pread
