Outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease/herpangina associated with coxsackievirus A6 and A10 infections in 2010, France: a large citywide, prospective observational study.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and herpangina (HA) are frequently caused by several distinct serotypes belonging to the human enterovirus A species (HEVA). Enterovirus 71 is considered as a significant public health threat because of rare but fatal neurological complications. A sentinel surveillance system involving paediatricians from Clermont-Ferrand (France) was set up to determine the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of HFMD/HA associated with enterovirus infections. A standardized report form was used to collect demographic and clinical data. Throat or buccal specimens we

Application of fluorescent cholangiography to single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

BACKGROUND: Although the use of single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC) is spreading rapidly, this technique has disadvantages. It does not allow for sufficient surgical views to be obtained or for intraoperative radiographic cholangiography to be performed. Fluorescent cholangiography using a preoperative intravenous injection of indocyanine green (ICG) may be useful for identifying the biliary tract during both SILC and conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: For seven patients undergoing SILC, 1 ml of ICG (2.5 mg) was administered by intravenous injection before the

CagA status and VacA subtypes of Helicobacter pylori in relation to histopathologic findings in Iranian population.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to detect dominant cagA/vacA genotypes of Helicobacter Pylori (H. pylori) and determine correlations between different cagA/vacA genotypes and histologic features of chronic gastritis in Iranian patients. METHODS: Gastric biopsy was taken from 166 patients with nonulcer dyspepsia. The specimens were processed and DNA from each H. pylori isolate was extracted from multiple colony sweeps for identification of glmM gene. The vacA subtypes and cagA gene were tested by PCR . Histopathological features were recorded and graded according to partial Syd

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis due to Rhinocladiella mackenziei (formerly Ramichloridium mackenziei): a taxonomic update and review of the literature.

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis caused by Rhinocladiella mackenziei (formerly Ramichlo-ridium mackenziei) is extremely rare, and geographically limited to the Middle East. The fungus exclusively targets the brain and infections have a grave prognosis. Eighteen cases have been reported in the literature from 1983 to 2004 with almost 100% mortality. Our patient presented in February 2008 with a brain abscess while receiving chemotherapy for carcinoma of the breast. Diagnosis was by craniotomy and aspiration of the brain abscess. Direct microscopy showed dematiaceous fungal hyphae. R. mackenziei was r

Detection of circulating tumour cells in peripheral blood with an automated scanning fluorescence microscope.

We have developed an automated, highly sensitive and specific method for identifying and enumerating circulating tumour cells (CTCs) in the blood. Blood samples from 10 prostate, 25 colorectal and 4 ovarian cancer patients were analysed. Eleven healthy donors and seven men with elevated serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels but no evidence of malignancy served as controls. Spiking experiments with cancer cell lines were performed to estimate recovery yield. Isolation was performed either by density gradient centrifugation or by filtration, and the CTCs were labelled with monoclonal anti

Auto-antibodies and autoreactive T-cells in rheumatoid arthritis: pathogenetic players and diagnostic tools.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is not only the most severe of all joint diseases but also the most common systemic autoimmune disease affecting approximately 1% of the world-wide adult population. RA is characterized by the presence of autoantibodies in serum and synovial fluid distinguishing the disease from other arthritides such reactive arthritis or osteoarthritis. Since the historical description of rheumatoid factor (RF), which is an autoantibody directed to immunoglobulin G, numerous additional autoantibodies have been discovered in sera of RA patients. These antibodies may be directed to ca

Hydrophilic iminosugar active-site-specific chaperones increase residual glucocerebrosidase activity in fibroblasts from Gaucher patients.

Gaucher disease is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by the deficient activity of glucocerebrosidase. Accumulation of glucosylceramide, primarily in the lysosomes of cells of the reticuloendothelial system, leads to hepatosplenomegaly, anemia and skeletal lesions in type I disease, and neurologic manifestations in types II and III disease. We report herein the identification of hydrophilic active-site-specific chaperones that are capable of increasing glucocerebrosidase activity in the cultured fibroblasts of Gaucher patients. Screening of a variety of natural and synthe

Kidney injury from alternative medicines.

In the developing world, up to 80% of the population uses traditional medicine for primary health care. In industrialized countries, adaptations of traditional medicine, termed "complementary" or "alternative" medicine (CAM), are used by a growing number of patients for preventive or palliative care. However, alternative medicine (AM) may be an important risk for the development of acute and chronic kidney injury because of several factors: nonconventional preparations rarely meet the required essential standards of consistency in composition and biological activity; many of these products con

[Expressions of depression in Alzheimer's disease. The current scientific debate].

UNLABELLED: This overview analyses findings coming from researches that considered the interaction between depression and Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHOD: Information was collected from the Medline database and from a reasoned manual analysis of the published studies. RESULTS: The prevalence of depressive symptoms in patients with AD is elevated (40-50%). The role of depression in the pathogenesis of AD (independent, prodromal symptom, factor of risk) still must be defined. Data on family history of depression suggest that AD could act as stimulus triggering depression from a basis of a gen

The gene encoding gigaxonin, a new member of the cytoskeletal BTB/kelch repeat family, is mutated in giant axonal neuropathy.

Disorganization of the neurofilament network is a prominent feature of several neurodegenerative disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), infantile spinal muscular atrophy and axonal Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Giant axonal neuropathy (GAN, MIM 256850), a severe, autosomal recessive sensorimotor neuropathy affecting both the peripheral nerves and the central nervous system, is characterized by neurofilament accumulation, leading to segmental distension of the axons. GAN corresponds to a generalized disorganization of the cytoskeletal intermediate filaments (IFs), to which neur

Cancer risk following polymyositis and dermatomyositis: a nationwide cohort study in Denmark.

Polymyositis and dermatomyositis (PM/DM) have been associated with cancer, although the long-term risks are poorly understood. To evaluate the risk of cancer by time periods subsequent to PM/DM diagnosis, a cohort of 539 patients hospitalized with PM/DM in Denmark between 1977 and 1989 was identified from the Danish Central Hospital Discharge Register. Cancer incidence among cohort members was ascertained by linkage to the Danish Cancer Registry using a unique personal-identification number. The overall cancer risk was elevated significantly among patients with DM (standardized incidence ratio

Rapid CSF Molecular Diagnosis of Listeria monocytogenes Meningoencephalitis in an Elderly Immunocompetent Patient: A Case Report.

Background/Objectives: Listeria monocytogenes is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening cause of central nervous system infection, predominantly affecting older adults and immunocompromised patients. Neurolisteriosis may present with nonspecific neurological manifestations, and the absence of classical meningeal signs may delay diagnosis. We report a case of L. monocytogenes meningoencephalitis in an elderly patient without known immunosuppression, with rapid cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) molecular testing facilitating early diagnosis and appropriate antimicrobial treatment.
