PrP(CWD) in the myenteric plexus, vagosympathetic trunk and endocrine glands of deer with chronic wasting disease.

Accumulated evidence in experimental and natural prion disease systems supports a neural route of infectious prion spread from peripheral sites of entry to the central nervous system. However, little is known about prion trafficking routes in cervids with a naturally occurring prion disease known as chronic wasting disease (CWD). In the brain, the pathogenic isoform of the prion protein (PrP(CWD)) accumulates initially in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve. To assess whether alimentary-associated neural pathways may play a role in prion trafficking, neural and endocrine tissues from m

Protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5). A new neuronal marker visualizing the whole uterine innervation and pregnancy-induced and developmental changes in the guinea pig.

The guinea pig uterus is supplied by different populations of nerves which can be demonstrated by specific immunocytochemical and histochemical techniques. So far, there has been no single marker displaying entire peripheral innervation patterns. Recently, protein gene product (PGP) 9.5, a cytoplasmic protein in neurons and neuroendocrine cells, was found to visualize both different populations and subtypes of nerves. This prompted the present study of using PGP 9.5 for visualization of the whole uterine innervation. This was performed by the indirect immunofluorescence method using antiserum

Beta2-adrenoceptors facilitating noradrenaline secretion from human vasoconstrictor nerves.

Isolated biopsy specimens of human peripheral arteries and veins, preincubated with 3H-(-)- noradrenaline (NA) to label the neural stores of NA, were used to study the Beta-adrenoceptors previously found to increase the secretion of 3H-NA evoked by electrical field stimulation of the adrenergic nerves of this tissue. The increase in nerve stimulation induced secretion of 3H-NA caused by 0.04 muM isoprenaline was prevented by 1 muM propranolol. This beta-blocking drug by itself slightly but significantly depressed the secretion of 3H-NA caused by nerve stimulation in the absence of isoprenaline

A case report of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder with peripheral neuropathy as the first episode.

RATIONALE: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSDs) represent recurrent autoimmune diseases, generally beginning with optic nerve neuritis or acute transverse myelitis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 57-year-old male with long-term alcohol intake was hospitalized because of limb numbness. EMG examination showed the peripheral sensory nerve was in demyelination and an axonal injury was found. His symptoms could not be improved by vitamin B injection but were later significantly attenuated by dexamethasone treatment. Four months later, symptoms of optic neuritis in the left eye appeared, and 6 mon

Improving morbidity and mortality in hip fragility fractures.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hip fragility fractures (HFF) carry high morbidity and mortality for patients and will increase in frequency and in proportion to the average patient age. Provision of effective, timely care for these patients can decrease their morbidity and mortality and reduce the large burden they place on the healthcare system. RECENT FINDINGS: There are associative relationships between prefracture frailty, postoperative delirium and increased morbidity and mortality. The use of a multidisciplinary approach to HFF care has shown improved outcomes in care with focus on modifiable facto

Double axillary vein variation diagnosed with ultrasound guidance during infraclavicular nerve block intervention.

The use of ultrasound guidance increases the safety of peripheral block interventions by allowing anaesthesiologists to simultaneously see the position of block needle, the targeted nerves and surrounding vessels. In this report, we represented three patients diagnosed with double axillary vein variation with ultrasound guidance during infraclavicular nerve block intervention. The patients were scheduled for different types of upper limb surgeries. All patients received infraclavicular nerve block for anaesthetic management. A double axillary vein variation was diagnosed with ultrasound during

Low Median Nerve Palsy as Initial Manifestation of Churg-Strauss Syndrome.

Anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) syndrome is typically characterized by forearm pain and partial or complete dysfunction of the AIN-innervated muscles. Although the exact etiology and pathophysiology of the disorder remain unclear, AIN syndrome is increasingly thought to be an inflammatory condition of the nerve rather than a compressive neuropathy because the symptoms often resolve spontaneously following prolonged observation. However, peripheral neuropathy can be 1 of the first symptoms of systemic vasculitis that needs early systemic immunotherapy to prevent extensive nerve damage. Churg-

Massive Oculomotor Nerve Enlargement: A Case of Presumed Schwannomatosis.

A 45-year-old man presented with a slowly progressive pupil-involving third nerve palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a tubular lesion extending from the interpeduncular cistern through the cavernous sinus and into the left orbit where it branched into a superior and an inferior division, clearly outlining the anatomy of the third cranial nerve. Multiple other, less pronounced, enlarged cranial nerves were noted. The differential diagnosis included chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN), neurofibromatosis (NF), and

Effects of acute and chronic denervation on human myotonia.

A 32-year-old man with myotonia congenita (Becker type) sustained multiple gunshot wounds. These produced a partial thoracic spinal cord injury and a severe sciatic nerve injury. Six days following the incident, clinical (percussion) and electrophysiologic (EMG) myotonia could be elicited in paretic leg muscles resulting both from the myelopathy and peripheral nerve disruption. Eight months later, the myotonia was no longer present in denervated muscles from the sciatic nerve injury, but was still noted in muscles with upper-motor neuron weakness from the myelopathy. Although myotonia is relat

Mast cells alter granular properties and spatial relation to nerve fibres in spondylitis of adjuvant-treated rats.

It has been long implicated that mast cells (MCs) have a close spatial relationship to the peripheral nerve fibres. In the present study, which used spondylitis of adjuvant-treated rats, we investigated the behaviour of MCs in relation to peripheral nerve fibres and other inflammatory cells. Rat MCs with staining properties like connective tissue MCs decreased in number as inflammation progressed. With additional electron microscopic studies it was possible to observe the sequence of changes in their granular ultrastructure during active inflammation. Thus, the decrement of MCs with staining p

[Sarcoid Peripheral Neuropathy and Myopathy: A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenge].

Sarcoidosis is an idiopathic granulomatous multi-organ disease, primarily affecting the respiratory system, eyes, and skin, with less involvement in peripheral neurons and muscles. Sarcoid peripheral neuropathy encompasses cranial and spinal nerve impairment. Muscle involvement is often asymptomatic and revealed through imaging. Symptomatic muscle involvement is categorized into three clinical types: nodular myopathy, acute myopathy, and chronic myopathy. The identification of noncaseating granulomas in peripheral nerves or muscles, coupled with the exclusion of other diseases, is essential fo

Acute carpal tunnel syndrome in a diver: evidence of peripheral nervous system involvement in decompression illness.

Conclusive evidence for involvement of the peripheral nervous system in decompression illness is lacking. We report a case of decompression illness associated with shoulder pain and the clinical features of median nerve injury at the wrist. Initial recompression and hyperbaric oxygen treatment produced prompt relief of all symptoms and signs, but carpal tunnel syndrome subsequently recurred. Nerve conduction studies confirmed median nerve conduction delay at the wrist. Repeat measurements after treatment with hyperbaric oxygen showed electrophysiologic improvement that was consistent with impr

[Mononeuritis multiplex in a case of primary macroglobulinemia (author's transl)].

A case of Waldenström's disease with peripheral nerve involvement resembling mononeuritis multiplex is described. The various etiopathogenic mechanisms generally cited in connection with peripheral neuropathies observed in cases of macroglobulinemia, most often of the polyneuritic type, are discussed in turn : nerve infiltration by lymphocytes, intervention of an immunologic mechanism through the agency of paraprotein links with amyloidosis. However, the reported case differs from habitual cases on account of the asymmetry of the nerve involvement and the discovery of vasculitic lesions on mus

Neurotrophic Effects of GH and GnRH in a Full Sciatic Nerve Transection Model in Male Rats.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral nerve injuries, such as sciatic nerve transection (SNT), are often associated with significant sensory and motor deficits. Growth hormone (GH) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) have been shown to exert neurotrophic effects that can promote nerve regeneration and functional reinnervation. However, the combined impact of these hormones on peripheral nerve repair remains poorly understood. METHODS: This study aimed to analyze the individual and combined effects of GH and GnRH in a rat model of SNT, using orchiectomized male rats to prevent steroid-mediated neuror

Reorganization of cortical representations of the hand following alterations of skin inputs induced by nerve injury, skin island transfers, and experience.

Tactile experiences remodel the central nervous system representations of the body surface. The results of assessments of ten peripheral manipulations that reveal different aspects of representational plasticity are reviewed: (1) chronic peripheral denervation; (2) surgical amputation; (3) digital syndactyly and its natural behavioral equivalents; (4) peripheral nerve crush with reinnervation; (5) peripheral nerve transection and repair, with reinnervation; (6) denervation of very large skin surfaces, for very long times; (7) electrical stimulation of large-fiber afferents in the median nerve,

Dietary monounsaturated fatty acids reduce nerve inflammation and improve nerve function in murine models of obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a morbid and disabling condition that frequently develops during diabetes and prediabetes. In patients with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, obesity is a major risk factor for PN indicating that dietary fatty acids may contribute to the molecular pathogenesis of PN. Recent evidence shows that overconsumption of dietary saturated fatty acids (SFAs) contributes to PN progression in prediabetic murine models of PN whereas monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) improve nerve function without improving metabolic function, but the molecular basis for this dif

Deposition of Gadolinium in the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems and Its Effects on Sensory, Cognitive, and Athletic Implications after Multiple Injections of Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents in Rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: After repeat administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), the association between gadolinium retention in the central and peripheral nervous systems and the main manifestations of myelopathy and progressive neurologic symptoms remains unclear. We investigated the effects of the repeat administration of GBCAs on gadolinium retention in the central and peripheral nervous systems and the sensory, cognitive, and athletic implications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight male Wistar rats (6 weeks of age) were randomly divided into 4 experimental groups (12 rat

Knockdown of Porf-2 restores visual function after optic nerve crush injury.

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), the sole output neurons in the eyes, are vulnerable to diverse insults in many pathological conditions, which can lead to permanent vision dysfunction. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms that contribute to protecting RGCs and their axons from injuries are not completely known. Here, we identify that Porf-2, a member of the Rho GTPase activating protein gene group, is upregulated in RGCs after optic nerve crush. Knockdown of Porf-2 protects RGCs from apoptosis and promotes long-distance optic nerve regeneration after crush injury in both young and aged

The effects of altered ultrasound parameters on the recovery of sciatic nerve injury.

BACKGROUND: Initial studies have shown that low-energy ultrasound stimulates living tissue cells to reduce regeneration or speed up their recovery. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of various ultrasound parameters on the speed of recovery in injured sciatic nerves. METHODS: NMRI mice (n = 200) with injured left paw, caused by crushing their sciatic nerves, were randomly selected. The animals were exposed to ultrasound radiation with various frequencies, intensities, and exposure time. They were allocated into 20 groups (19 treatment and 1 control groups). Sciatic functiona
