The role of radical radiotherapy in the management of malignant pleural mesothelioma: A systematic review.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a devastating disease with limited treatment options and a dismal prognosis. Attempts to employ radical radiotherapy in this disease have been limited by the complex shape of the pleura and the dose restrictions necessitated by the close proximity of radiosensitive structures. Recent shifts towards a 'lung sparing' surgical approach in MPM have further heightened these challenges. The aim of this systematic review is to assess recent advances in radiotherapy planning and delivery, to ascertain how these developments have impacted on the feasibility of de

Valproic Acid-Functionalized Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes as Mitochondria-Targeting Anticancer Agents.

Valproic acid (VPA) is a short-chain, fatty acid type histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi), which can cause growth arrest and induce differentiation of transformed cells. Phosphorescent cyclometalated IrIII complexes have emerged as potential anticancer agents. By conjugation of VPA to IrIII complexes through an ester bond, VPA-functionalized cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes 1 a-3 a were designed and synthesized. These complexes display excellent two-photon properties, which are favorable for live-cell imaging. The ester bonds in 1 a-3 a can be hydrolyzed quickly by esterase and display

Syndrome of transient headache and neurological deficits with cerebrospinal fluid lymphocytosis (HaNDL) in a patient with confusional symptoms, diffuse EEG abnormalities, and bilateral vasospasm in transcranial Doppler ultrasound: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: HaNDL syndrome (transient headache and neurological deficits with cerebrospinal fluid lymphocytosis) is characterised by one or more episodes of headache and transient neurological deficits associated with cerebrospinal fluid lymphocytosis. To date, few cases of HaNDL manifesting with confusional symptoms have been described. Likewise, very few patients with HaNDL and confusional symptoms have been evaluated with transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD). TCD data from patients with focal involvement reveal changes consistent with vasomotor alterations. DEVELOPMENT: We present the c

(18)F-FET-PET in Primary Hyperparathyroidism: A Pilot Study.

Preoperative localisation of the diseased parathyroid gland(s) in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) is a prerequisite for subsequent minimally invasive surgery. Recently, as alternatives to conventional sestamibi parathyroid scintigraphy, the (11)C-based positron emission tomography (PET) tracers methionine and choline have shown promise for this purpose. We evaluated the feasibility of using the (18)F-based PET tracer fluoroethyl-l-tyrosine (FET), as the longer half-life of (18)F makes it logistically more favourable. As a proof-of-concept study, we included two patients with PHP in which dua

Castleman Disease of the Thorax: Clinical, Radiologic, and Pathologic Correlation: From the Radiologic Pathology Archives.

Castleman disease is a complex lymphoproliferative disease pathologically divided into two subtypes, the hyaline vascular variant (HVV) and the plasma cell variant (PCV). The HVV is the most common, is thought to represent a benign neoplasm of lymph node stromal cells, and is treated with surgical resection. It is most commonly found in the mediastinum, where it classically appears as a unicentric, avidly enhancing mass at computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging. This appearance can mimic other avidly enhancing mediastinal masses, and location, clinical history, laboratory data

Microassembly of Heterogeneous Materials using Transfer Printing and Thermal Processing.

Enabling unique architectures and functionalities of microsystems for numerous applications in electronics, photonics and other areas often requires microassembly of separately prepared heterogeneous materials instead of monolithic microfabrication. However, microassembly of dissimilar materials while ensuring high structural integrity has been challenging in the context of deterministic transferring and joining of materials at the microscale where surface adhesion is far more dominant than body weight. Here we present an approach to assembling microsystems with microscale building blocks of f

Photocurrent Generation by Photosynthetic Purple Bacterial Reaction Centers Interfaced with a Porous Antimony-Doped Tin Oxide (ATO) Electrode.

The ability to exchange energy and information between biological and electronic materials is critical in the development of hybrid electronic systems in biomedicine, environmental sensing, and energy applications. While sensor technology has been extensively developed to collect detailed molecular information, less work has been done on systems that can specifically modulate the chemistry of the environment with temporal and spatial control. The bacterial photosynthetic reaction center represents an ideal photonic component of such a system in that it is capable of modifying local chemistry v

[Scans without Evidence of Dopamine Deficit (SWEDDs)].

Dopamine transporter (DaT) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and [18F]fluoro-L-DOPA ([18F]DOPA) positron emission tomography (PET) facilitate the investigation of dopaminergic hypofunction in neurodegenerative diseases. DaT SPECT and [18F]DOPA PET have been adopted as survey tools in clinical trials. In a large study on Parkinson's disease, 4-15% of subjects clinically diagnosed with early-stage Parkinson's disease had normal dopaminergic functional imaging scans. These are called Scans without Evidence of Dopamine Deficit (SWEDDs), and are considered to represent a state diff

A Case of Moyamoya Disease with a Transient Neurologic Deterioration Associated with Subcortical Low Intensity on Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery Magnetic Resonance Images After Bypass Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease often is treated by revascularization surgery. In this report, we are the first to describe a case of moyamoya disease that repeatedly showed a transient subcortical low intensity (SCLI) on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance images postoperatively. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 59-year-old woman presenting with repeated transient ischemia underwent right superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery anastomosis with encephalo-duro-myo-synangiosis. After the operation, the patient had a transient neurologic deterioration. Findings on magne

Rescue Radioguided Laparoscopy Surgery for Meckel's Diverticulum: Technical Notes.

The extirpation of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) via conventional or laparoscopic surgery is the definitive treatment. However, certain circumstances may modify or alter this situation and require the application of exceptional measures. We report a case under our observation who previously had an exploratory abdominal laparotomy for a suspected MD; however, the findings were negative. At that time, the diagnosis was established based on low-level gastrointestinal bleeding and isotopic tests that confirmed the existence of the diverticulum. Given the findings of gamma-graphic exploration and the p

The marmoset monkey as a model for visual neuroscience.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) has been valuable as a primate model in biomedical research. Interest in this species has grown recently, in part due to the successful demonstration of transgenic marmosets. Here we examine the prospects of the marmoset model for visual neuroscience research, adopting a comparative framework to place the marmoset within a broader evolutionary context. The marmoset's small brain bears most of the organizational features of other primates, and its smooth surface offers practical advantages over the macaque for areal mapping, laminar electrode penetration

Molecular mechanisms linking neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in MS.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) and one of the leading causes of neurological deficits and disability in young adults in western countries. Current medical treatment mainly influences disease progression via immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive actions. Indeed, MS research has been foremost focused on inflammation in the CNS, but more recent evidence suggests that chronic disability in MS is caused by neurodegeneration. Imaging studies show an early involvement of neurodegeneration as brain atrophy and gray matte

Dielectric, electro-optical, and photoluminescence characteristics of ferroelectric liquid crystals on a graphene-coated indium tin oxide substrate.

Multilayer graphene was deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO) -coated glass plates and characterized by suitable techniques. A liquid crystal sample cell was designed using graphene deposited ITO glass plates without any additional treatment for alignment. Ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) material was filled in the sample cell. The effect of multilayer graphene on the characteristics of FLC material was investigated. The extremely high relative permittivity of pristine graphene and charge transfer between graphene and FLC material were consequences of the enormous increase in relative permitti

Severe and prolonged ictal paresis in an elderly patient.

We report an 84-year-old female who showed a rare manifestation of epilepsy, ictal paresis, a type of simple partial seizure presenting with focal motor dysfunction. While the patient exhibited severe left hemiplegia which lasted for a week, cranial diffusion-weighted MRI demonstrated slightly high intensity in the right posterior quadrant, and electroencephalography (EEG) showed continuous epileptiform discharges located mainly in the right parieto-occipital area, strongly suggesting that the patient was in an ictal state. Vascular Reconstruction for Radiation-induced Bilateral Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion and Unilateral External Carotid Artery Stenosis by a Combination of Surgical and Endovascular Method: Case Report.

We present a case of a 63-year-old male presenting with right hemiparesis and diagnosed as cerebral infarction. He had a previous history of left pharyngeal carcinoma, which was treated by radial dissection and radiation therapy 10 years before. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multiple cerebral infarction in the bilateral cerebral hemisphere, predominantly on the left. Cerebral angiography showed occlusion of bilateral internal carotid arteries and severe stenosis at the orifice of the left external carotid artery (ECA). Single photon emission tomography (SPECT) showed reduced cerebral

Sweat, the driving force behind normal skin: an emerging perspective on functional biology and regulatory mechanisms.

The various symptoms associated with excessive or insufficient perspiration can significantly reduce a patient's quality of life. If a versatile and minimally invasive method could be established for returning sweat activity to normalcy, there is no question that it could be used in the treatment of many diseases that are believed to involve perspiration. For this reason, based on an understanding of the sweat-gland control function and sweat activity, it was necessary to conduct a comprehensive search for the factors that control sweating, such as the central and peripheral nerves that contro

[Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome with cortical subarachnoid hemorrhage presenting as thunderclap headache-a long followed up case].

A 59-year-old woman presented with thunderclap headache. Cranial CT showed cortical subarachnoid hemorrhage (cSAH) at the right parietal lobe and cerebral angiography on day 5 revealed multiple cerebral arterial constriction, diagnosed as reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS). We could not detect vasoconstriction in MRA at the first examination on day 4, and vasoconstrictive finding appeared around Willis circle 8 days later. There was a temporal difference in a cephalalgic symptom and vasoconstrictive appearance. Clinical symptoms completely recovered and head CT, MRI/MRA findi

Apparent diffusion coefficient evaluation for secondary changes in the cerebellum of rats after middle cerebral artery occlusion.

Supratentorial cerebral infarction can cause functional inhibition of remote regions such as the cerebellum, which may be relevant to diaschisis. This phenomenon is often analyzed using positron emission tomography and single photon emission CT. However, these methods are expensive and radioactive. Thus, the present study quantified the changes of infarction core and remote regions after unilateral middle cerebral artery occlusion using apparent diffusion coefficient values. Diffusion-weighted imaging showed that the area of infarction core gradually increased to involve the cerebral cortex wi
