Comparison of Three Surgical Approaches for Frontobasal Meningiomas: Purely Endoscopic Endonasal, Purely Microscopic Bifrontal Transcranial, and Combined Endoscopic and Microscopic Supraorbital Transciliary Approaches.

Surgical removal of frontobasal meningiomas (FBMs) can be achieved using different techniques, including endoscopic, transcranial, and combined approaches. The advantages and disadvantages of the outcomes of these approaches should be compared to provide the most convenient surgical treatment to the patient. This study aimed to compare 3 surgical approaches for FBMsin terms of outcomes and determine the superiority of each on the basis of anatomical, surgical, and clinical efficacy. Systematic review was performed to identify studies comparing techniques for the surgical removal of FBMs. Each

Modeling disease progression among moderate-stage Parkinson's disease patients: A targeted literature review.

BACKGROUND: Predicting disease progression in Parkinson's disease (PD) is challenging, especially for moderate-stage patients already on dopaminergic therapy. Most models focus on early, untreated PD, but progression rates may differ in moderate-stage PD. Better understanding of these trajectories can improve clinical trial design, access to care, and value demonstration for new therapies that target this population. METHODS: We conducted a targeted literature review of longitudinal human PD studies in PubMed (inception-December 9, 2024) that quantitatively modeled disease progression, extrac

Personalized Oncology: Organizing Cancer Treatment Around Patient Biology.

Clinical guidelines remain the foundation of evidence-based oncology, translating population-derived evidence into treatment recommendations for defined patient groups. However, patients with rare cancers, complex tumor biology, or treatment-refractory disease may reach a point at which applicable evidence is limited, or guideline-recommended treatment options have been exhausted. We propose Personalized Oncology as a complementary framework for treatment selection in these situations. Rather than asking only which treatments benefited similar patients, Personalized Oncology asks which availab

Estimating HIV Risk Among Individuals Released from Incarceration in Washington State: A Data-Driven Approach to Targeted Prevention.

People being released from prison face a heightened risk of HIV acquisition, yet there is need for additional research to quantify that risk and identify which groups should be prioritized for prevention efforts. We performed a population cohort study of people released from Washington State prisons to estimate the HIV acquisition risk post-release and applied machine learning methods to identify subpopulations at highest risk. We linked state prison release rosters (1/1/2010 and 12/31/2021) to HIV surveillance data to calculate HIV incidence post-release and used a decision tree to partition

From Children to the Entire Population: Policy Lessons From a Decade of Successful Sodium Intake Reduction in South Korea.

High sodium intake increases blood pressure and cardiovascular risk, making reduction a highly cost-effective public health strategy. South Korea, which historically had one of the highest global sodium consumption rates, implemented a comprehensive policy to reduce sodium intake, beginning with a child-focused, legislation-supported initiative in 2009. This approach expanded to national population-wide strategies in 2012 and 2016, incorporating sodium-reduced institutional meals, voluntary industry reformulation, enhanced nutrition labeling, and large-scale public education. From 2010 to 2019

SNAP MRI Reveals Association Between Distal Cerebral Arterial Flow and Cognitive Function in an Aging Population.

OBJECTIVE: Impaired blood flow has recently been recognized as a critical contributor to cognitive impairment and dementia. It was reported that cerebral distal arterial flow measured from Simultaneous Non-contrast Angiography and Intraplaque Hemorrhage (SNAP) MRI is associated with post-treatment cognitive function improvement in carotid atherosclerosis patients. In this study, we aim to evaluate the value of SNAP-based measurements in assessing cerebrovascular function in an aging population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Neurovascular MRI data were collected on 36 aging participants (22 cognitive

Risk Factors for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Latino Populations in Texas: A Scoping Review.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence in Texas is 45% higher than the national average, with disproportionate burden among the Hispanic/Latino population. Despite significant health disparities, comprehensive evidence on HCC risk factors specific to this population remains limited. This scoping review of 20 primarily observational studies utilized PubMed, EbscoHost, and the PRISMA-ScR checklist to map risk factors in south Texas. Results show that metabolic dysfunction, specifically diabetes and obesity, increases advanced liver disease odds by 7- to 12-fold compared to non-Hispanic groups.

Trends in Congenital Heart Disease Hospitalizations: What Nearly 50 Years of Longitudinal Data and Segmented Regression Reveal.

BACKGROUND: Understanding long-term health care utilization patterns in congenital heart disease (CHD) is essential for optimizing care delivery. While previous studies often assume linear trends, such assumptions could provide flawed analysis if abrupt changes in treatment or care occur, causing nonlinearity in trends. This study aims to determine if and where significant nonlinearity exists in hospitalization trends within the CHD pediatric population. METHODS: Using national Swedish registers, we conducted a retrospective cohort study using segmented regression analysis of pediatric CHD he

Association of baseline electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy with future renal function decline in the general population.

Electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) could predict adverse renal outcomes in patients with hypertension. This study aimed to investigate the association between electrocardiographic LVH and future decline in renal function in the general population using a dataset of population-based health checkups from 2010 to 2019 including 19,825 participants. Electrocardiographic LVH was defined according to the Minnesota code. Renal function decline was defined as a decrease of ≥ 25% in the estimated glomerular filtration rate from baseline to < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Electrocardiographic

Long-term outcomes and risk modifiers of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease between lean and non-lean populations.

One-third of adults across the globe exhibit metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)-formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). To date, MASLD is the fastest-growing etiology of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Besides the population with obesity, MASLD can also be found in lean populations, accounting for 13% of the global population, especially Asians. Notably, individuals with lean MASLD face equal or higher overall mortality rates compared to their non-lean counterparts. Risk modifiers encompass advanced age, hepatic fibros

Genomic Signatures of Local Adaptation under High Gene Flow in Lumpfish-Implications for Broodstock Provenance Sourcing and Larval Production.

Aquaculture of the lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.) has become a large, lucrative industry owing to the escalating demand for "cleaner fish" to minimise sea lice infestations in Atlantic salmon mariculture farms. We used over 10K genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to investigate the spatial patterns of genomic variation in the lumpfish along the coast of Norway and across the North Atlantic. Moreover, we applied three genome scans for outliers and two genotype-environment association tests to assess the signatures and patterns of local adaptation under extensive gene flow. With
