Predictors of HIV-preventive sexual behavior in a high-risk adolescent population: the influence of perceived peer norms and sexual communication on incarcerated adolescents' consistent use of condoms.

Data were collected from 112 sexually active adolescents incarcerated in a juvenile detention facility to identify predictors of consistent use of condoms during sexual intercourse. Adolescents completed an anonymous epidemiologic survey instrument developed by the Centers for Disease Control. The self-report survey assessed demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral factors. Three factors were identified as associated with consistent condom use. These significant bivariate factors were entered into a multivariate logistic regression model to identify the independent contribution of each factor

Need associations and psychopathology.

The 1960 Picture Identification Test (PIT) provides association scores for 210 need dyads derived from 21 Murray needs. Association scores for 16 clinical-control group pairs were analyzed for differences by t test. The clinical groups represented schizophrenic, neurotic, sex disturbance, and behavior disorder categories. Assertive needs produced the largest number od dyads which discriminated (p less than .05) clinical and control groups. Schizophrenic groups had the largest number of differences from normal controls. Schizophrenics tended to under-associate pairs of Assertive needs, as compa

Projecting severe sequelae of injection-related hepatitis C virus epidemic in the UK. Part 1: Critical hepatitis C and injector data.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C is transmitted by transfusion of unscreened blood, through injecting drugs, from mother-to-child and, on occasion, sexually. Transmission generally requires that the infector is hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA positive, a 'carrier'. About three-quarters of injectors who are hepatitis C antibody positive are HCV-RNA positive and so infectious to others. Incubation periods from HCV infection to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma are even longer than from HIV infection to AIDS, being counted in decades; they depend on age, gender, alcohol consumption and co-infection with

Non-fatal opioid overdose and unmet need for medications for opioid use disorder among recently incarcerated people who inject drugs.

BACKGROUND: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are key to preventing opioid overdose. Despite the high risk of opioid overdose among recently incarcerated people who use drugs, missed opportunities for engagement in MOUD treatment persist in this population. We examined the association between unmet need for MOUD and non-fatal opioid overdose among recently incarcerated people who inject drugs (PWID) and assessed prevalence of non-fatal opioid overdose by selected characteristics. METHODS: We analyzed 2022 data from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system among PWID fro

Ophthalmic care at an academic medical centre for patients who were incarcerated or in immigration detention.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Ophthalmic care for patients who are incarcerated or in immigration detention presents complex challenges for patients and providers. There remains a paucity of literature investigating ophthalmic care for these marginalised populations. We investigated the delivery of ophthalmic care in an academic health system to patients who were incarcerated or in immigration detention. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study and secondary analysis of electronic health record data for inpatient, outpatient, and surgical visits between 1 November 2018 and

Developing a conceptual framework for post-incarceration care for sexual and gender minoritized adults: a concept mapping study.

Mass incarceration in the United States is a social-structural driver of health for sexual and gender minoritized adults (SGMA). The aim of this study was to develop a conceptual framework for post-release healthcare to use in adapting a mobile health unit (MHU) for SGMA returning from jail. We used concept mapping to answer a focal prompt regarding health-related needs for SGMA post-release. We recruited SGMA with recent incarceration experience and relevant community partners to participate in 4 concept mapping sessions. Multidimensional scaling produced a two-dimensional point map of all st

Addressing COVID-19 and Health Literacy Disparities Among Correctional Facility Residents Through Dialogue-Based Education.

Carceral communities face heightened COVID-19-related risks while simultaneously experiencing medical mistrust and limited access to health information and services. Health education programs that incorporate dialogue-based, participatory learning models have been shown to motivate health behavior and increase health knowledge in carceral settings. To increase health literacy and change COVID-19-related health behavior among jail residents in the United States, a local health department developed a dialogue-based education program centered around COVID-19 prevention, misinformation, and naviga

Characteristics of recently incarcerated primary care patients with and without a positive posttraumatic stress disorder screening upon clinic intake.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is prevalent among people who have been incarcerated. Here, we examined whether screening positive for PTSD was associated with other indicators of poor health, acute healthcare utilization, and poverty among primary care patients upon release from incarceration. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in a national network of primary care clinics serving people recently released from incarceration. Participants were 416 patients who completed the Primary Care PTSD screen (PC-PTSD) and other questions about mental and physical health, acut

Race-Related and Mental Health Factors of Powder Cocaine Use Among Black Incarcerated Men.

Incarceration disproportionately impacts Black men in the United States, which can have compounding effects on mental health and substance use among this population. Cocaine use, in particular, carries higher severity of dependence and overdose risks among Black Americans, though research examining cocaine use correlates among Black incarcerated men is limited. The present study examines race-related and mental health correlates of powder cocaine use among a sample of incarcerated Black men (n = 208) using the General Strain Theory. Specifically, the present study was a secondary analysis exam

Electroconvulsive therapy use in the adult U.S. correctional setting: A case report and literature review.

Mr. C is a 45-year-old male inmate who was found in his cell unresponsive and mute. He had poor food and fluid intake for the last four days and was later found standing in place, frozen, and resistant to movement when encouraged by a corrections officer to rest in his bed. His symptoms were consistent with catatonia, a severe motor syndrome that can be life-threatening. The patient had a psychiatric history of bipolar I disorder with multiple past episodes of catatonia. Lorazepam was ineffective at reversing his catatonic symptoms, and his serum creatinine kinase level eventually began to ris

Are Liaison and Diversion interventions in policing delivering the planned impact: A longitudinal evaluation in two constabularies?

Liaison and Diversion (L&D) has twin objectives: improving mental health outcomes and reducing re-offending. Early diversion from police custody seems promising, but evidence of benefit is required to sustain such programmes. To test the hypothesis that contact with L&D services while in police custody would lead to improved mental health outcomes and a reduction in type and level of offending, we used a pre-post service use design. National Health Service (NHS) records in two counties were searched for evidence that patients had been involved with L&D services while in police custody during t

Cancer stage at presentation for incarcerated patients at a single urban tertiary care center.

Patients who are incarcerated are a vulnerable patient population and may suffer from less access to routine cancer screenings compared to their non-incarcerated counterparts. Therefore, a thorough evaluation of potential differences in cancer diagnosis staging is needed. We sought to examine whether there are differences in cancer stage at initial diagnosis between non-incarcerated and incarcerated patients by pursuing a retrospective chart review from 2010-2017 for all patients who were newly diagnosed with cancer at an urban safety net hospital. Incarceration status was determined by insura

Criminal Justice-Involved Women Navigate COVID-19: Notes From the Field.

In March-April, 2020, we communicated with a cohort of criminal justice-involved (CJI) women to see how they were navigating COVID-19, chronic illness, homelessness, and shelter-in-place orders in Oakland, Birmingham, and Kansas City. We report on conversations with N = 35 women (out of the cohort of 474 women) and our own observations from ongoing criminal justice involvement studies. Women reported barriers to protecting themselves given widespread unstable housing and complex health needs, though many tried to follow COVID-19 prevention recommendations. Women expressed dissatisfaction with

Barriers to optimal antiretroviral therapy adherence among HIV-infected formerly incarcerated individuals in New York City.

In the United States (U.S.), the HIV infection rate is disproportionately high among incarcerated individuals. HIV-infected individuals typically receive antiretroviral therapy (ART) to suppress HIV and reduce the threat of transmission. Although HIV-infected individuals are generally ART-adherent while incarcerated, the public health benefits experienced during incarceration are often lost as HIV-infected individuals struggle to maintain optimal adherence post-incarceration. While the importance of maintaining adherence in the post-incarceration period has been acknowledged, research on barri

Parental Incarceration and Child Overweight: Results From a Sample of Disadvantaged Children in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Rates of childhood obesity and parental incarceration have been increasing in the United States since the 1970s. We examined whether parental incarceration was associated with child overweight at age 9 and whether that association differed by which parent was incarcerated. METHODS: We ran cross-sectional logistic regression models predicting the likelihood of a child being overweight, conditional on whether the child's mother, father, or both parents had ever been incarcerated. Our sample included non-Hispanic black (n = 1638) and non-Hispanic white (n = 504) children who were sur

"Like I Have No Choice": A Qualitative Exploration of HIV Diagnosis and Medical Care Experiences While Incarcerated and Their Effects.

It is estimated that one in six Black and Latino adult persons living with HIV (PLWH) spend time in correctional institutions each year. Yet after release, PLWH of color evidence poor HIV health outcomes across the HIV care continuum. This study, guided by an ecological approach and Critical Race Theory, sought to understand the lived experiences of socioeconomically disadvantaged PLWH of color who received an HIV diagnosis and/or medical care while incarcerated, and the ways in which those experiences influenced engagement in medical care after release. Drawn from a larger study in Brooklyn,

Characteristics and Precipitating Circumstances of Suicide Among Incarcerated Youth.

OBJECTIVE: Studies show incarcerated youth are at increased risk for suicidal behavior, yet little is known about factors associated with suicide for this population. Using a nationally representative sample, this study examined characteristics and precipitating circumstances of suicide in incarcerated youth decedents compared with youth suicide decedents in the general population. METHOD: Data were analyzed for suicide decedents 10- to 24-years-old (N = 10,126) in the United States from 2003 through 2012 from the National Violent Death Reporting System. Logistic regression compared precipita

Potential drivers of HIV acquisition in African-American women related to mass incarceration: an agent-based modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Incarceration can increase HIV risk behaviors for individuals involved with the criminal justice system and may be a driver of HIV acquisition within the community. METHODS: We used an agent-based model to simulate HIV transmission in a sexual-contact network representing heterosexual African American men and women in Philadelphia to identify factors influencing the impact of male mass incarceration on HIV acquisition in women. The model was calibrated using surveillance data and assumed incarceration increased the
