Gut microbiota impact on lung diseases: a mini review of clinical evidence.

The gut-lung axis represents a bidirectional communication network through which the gut microbiota (GM) influences respiratory health. This mini-review synthesizes clinical evidence on the role of the GM in lung diseases. We focused exclusively on human clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews, sourced from major databases after duplicate removal. The evidence indicates that GM dysbiosis is a significant risk factor for the susceptibility and severity of various respiratory conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),

Targeting microbiota-generated acetaldehyde to prevent progression of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.

The progression from metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) to steatohepatitis (MASH) entails rapid, often irreversible hepatic injury, underscoring the urgent need for innovative therapeutic strategies. Here, we demonstrate that excessive dietary sugar intake, particularly fructose, exacerbates liver disease progression through microbiota-mediated amplification of endogenous acetaldehyde production. Analysis of over 210,000 participants from the UK Biobank revealed a dose-dependent correlation between sugar consumption and liver-related mortality, accompanied by a mi

Vibrio proteolyticus DCF12.2 postbiotic modulates intestinal metabolic and immune pathways in zebrafish.

Postbiotics have recently emerged as a promising alternative to probiotics in aquaculture due to their improved safety, stability, and ease of application; however, the biological effects of postbiotics derived from Vibrio proteolyticus remain largely unexplored. In this study, we evaluated the impact of dietary supplementation with ethanol-inactivated V. proteolyticus DCF12.2 on the intestinal microbiota composition and transcriptomic profile of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Fish were fed a control diet (CTRL group) or a diet supplemented with 1% lyophilized ethanol-inactivated V. proteolyticus DC

Intestinal Microbiomics and Liver Metabolomics Insights into the Improvement Effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum FJG2627 on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Acute Liver Injury in Mice.

Endotoxin is one of the chemical substances that cause acute liver injury (ALI), which become a common health problem worldwide. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have emerged as a promising candidate for attenuating endotoxin-induced ALI. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum FJG2627 is a LAB isolated from traditional pickles with excellent probiotic effects. In this study, the protective functions of L. plantarum FJG2627 against ALI caused by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in mice were investigated. Administration of L. plantarum FJG2627 significantly reduced serum ALT, AST, and pro-inflammatory factors (IL-1β

Phosphate binders and the gut microbiota in chronic kidney disease: mechanisms, mixed evidence, and clinical considerations.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disrupts the gut microbiome through dietary restrictions, uraemia, and polypharmacy, including phosphate binders. This dysbiosis contributes to systemic inflammation, accumulation of uremic toxins, and reduced short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria. Hyperphosphatemia, a key CKD complication, typically emerges in advanced stages. This review examines the impact of phosphate binders on gut microbiota and explores emerging biological therapies. Phosphate binders are standard treatment for hyperphosphatemia but may influence gut microbiota by altering luminal

[Gut microbiota dysbiosis in type 1 diabetes mellitus: Impacts, mechanisms, and interventions].

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic autoimmune disease whose pathogenesis involves interactions between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Gut microbiota dysbiosis may participate in the onset and progression of T1DM. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota in patients with T1DM is characterized not only by reduced microbial diversity but also by systemic functional disturbances, particularly the depletion of protective metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and secondary bile acids. These alterations may aggravate pancreatic islet autoimmunity through mechanisms i

Diet, gut microbiota, and the gut-brain axis: mechanistic interactions and therapeutic implications in neuropsychiatric disorders.

The gut microbiota is a dynamic trans-kingdom ecosystem that contributes to host immunological, metabolic, and neuroendocrine homeostasis through the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA). Diet is one of the major environmental factors shaping this axis, as it influences microbial composition, microbial production of neuroactive metabolites, and intestinal barrier integrity. Dysbiosis has been increasingly associated with neurological, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, autism spectrum disorder, and attention-deficit/hypera

Vaginal microbiota impacts of a Lactobacillus crispatus live biotherapeutic and predictors of colonization in randomized controlled trial.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) affects >25% of women worldwide and often recurs after standard-of-care metronidazole (MTZ) treatment. LACTIN-V, a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) containing Lactobacillus crispatus strain CTV-05, significantly reduced recurrent BV in a phase 2b clinical trial, but efficacy was incomplete. Here, we characterize microbiota and immune effects using multi-omics and define correlates of treatment success. By week 12, an L. crispatus-dominant microbiota was achieved in 30% of LBP recipients compared with 9% of placebo recipients (benefit ratio: 3.31; p < 0.005). This is p

Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG lysate inhibits Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation in human skin explants.

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of skin and soft tissue infections and a major nosocomial pathogen, with biofilm formation contributing to significantly higher morbidity and mortality. In atopic dermatitis (AD), where skin barrier dysfunction and microbial dysbiosis are common features, S. aureus abundance and biofilm formation are associated with disease severity and flare recurrence. We previously demonstrated that a lysate of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG)- a common human commensal and widely used probiotic strain- can inhibit S. aureus attachment to human keratinocytes by m

Salmonella infection in chickens: pathogen, pathogenesis, and dietary non-drug feed additives as alternatives to antibiotics - a comprehensive review.

Salmonella infections in poultry can result in systemic, localized diseases, or prolonged asymptomatic carriers. Avian host-specific Salmonellae such as S. Pullorum and S. Gallinarum can spread vertically or horizontally from diseased birds or contaminated feed, water, or litter (fecal-oral route), resulting in significant mortality rates of up to 80% in chicks and poults during 1st 2-3 weeks of age. Furthermore, one of the most common food-borne diseases in humans is caused by Paratyphoid Salmonellae. The antibiotic overuse or misuse in animal production raises concerns due to the formation o

Postbiotics as promising tools for controlling foodborne viruses infections.

Foodborne viruses were ranked as the top food safety concerns in recent years and may pose a significant risk to the public's health. Any stage of the food supply chain can experience viral contamination of food, and the fecal-oral route of transmission to humans, which involves contact between individuals as well as ingestion of contaminated food or water may result in a foodborne outbreak. There are some chemical, physical and non-thermal technologies for inactivation of foodborne viruses but these methods can occasionally be ineffectual and alter the food's organoleptic properties. Postbiot

[Gut microbiota: new perspective on the treatment of acute pancreatitis and clinical application prospects].

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a severe inflammatory disease characterized by self-digestion of pancreatic tissue and inflammatory responses. Recent studies have revealed a close connection between gut microbiota and AP. The gut microbiota community, a complex ecosystem composed of trillions of microorganisms, is closely associated with various physiological activities of the host, including metabolic processes, immune system regulation, and intestinal structure maintenance. However, in patients with AP, dysbiosis of the gut microbiota are believed to play a key role in the occurrence and progress

Bifidobacterium adolescentis Strengthens Gut Barrier in Post-Voyage Functional Constipation.

Prolonged periods of sailing may contribute to the development of functional constipation, which can significantly impair an individual's work efficiency. Currently, the efficacy of Bifidobacteria in treating functional constipation is gaining recognition. However, since the therapeutic effects of Bifidobacteria are strain-specific, further research is required on strains isolated from pre-voyage fecal samples. This study examines the role of gut microbiota in post-stroke constipation, aiming to identify specific microbial biomarkers for the development of targeted therapeutic strategies. B. a
