Efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of asthenospermia in obese men: study protocol for a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Asthenospermia is one of the most common causes of male infertility. In recent years, with changes in dietary habits, the number of obese patients with asthenospermia has been increasing, leading to a decline in male fertility. However, there remains a lack of safe and effective treatments for this condition. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to confirm the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in obese patients with asthenospermia. METHODS: In our randomized controlled trial, 72 patients will be randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either acupuncture treatment or sham acupuncture treatment.

Mechanisms of brain-body interactions in post-stroke visceral dysfunction and recovery.

Traditionally, stroke has been characterized as an acute focal brain injury; however, its clinical consequences extend beyond neurological deficits to encompass visceral dysfunction, which substantially influences functional outcomes, quality of life, and social reintegration. Here, we advance an integrated brain-body interaction (BBI) framework that conceptualizes post-stroke visceral dysfunction as a systemic consequence of disrupted communication between the brain and peripheral organs, rather than as isolated organ-specific complications. This review synthesizes four interconnected pathway

Opioid-induced respiratory depression: an underappreciated role of the peripheral nervous system.

Opioid overdose often leads to death, largely due to opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD). Extensive investigations have focused on the effects of opioids on brainstem breathing circuits. Peripheral sensory pathways also play an important role in shaping breathing behavior. This review highlights the effects of selected opioids and enkephalins on peripheral sensory inputs controlling breathing. Morphine and enkephalins activate vagal pulmonary C-fiber afferents, causing apnea in rodent models, along with increased laryngeal nerve activity and airway constriction; these effects can be r

Adaptive zones of feliforms and evolutionary regimes within terrestrial mammalian carnivores.

Terrestrial carnivores have repeatedly evolved similar ecomorphologies, yet the relationship between dental morphology and diet remains inconsistently predictive and seemingly at odds with this observation. Here we examine the presence of carnivore adaptive zones and this form/function mismatch using a total-evidence phylogeny of living and extinct feliforms, modelling the evolution of body mass and dental toolkit (relative blade length of the lower carnassial). We identify three adaptive zones within feliforms: (1) an ancestral cataract of carnivory, comprising small-bodied, ecologically flex

Russell body gastritis resolved after Helicobacter pylori eradication: a case report and review of the literature.

Russell body gastritis (RBG) is a rare gastric inflammatory lesion characterized by dense infiltration of plasma cells containing Russell bodies (RBs) known as Mott cells. Here, we report a case of RBG that showed resolution 2 months after Helicobacter pylori eradication. A gastric biopsy revealed numerous eosinophilic globular RBs and signet ring cell-like Mott cells. H. pylori infection was identified on the surface of foveolar epithelial cells. Alcian blue staining was negative for RBs. Periodic acid-Schiff staining showed that most RBs were negative, with only a few RBs and Mott cells show

Review of Dynamic Resting-State Methods in Neuroimaging: Applications to Depression and Rumination.

Large-scale functional brain networks have most commonly been evaluated using static methods that assess patterns of activation or functional connectivity over an extended period. However, this approach does not capture time-varying features of functional networks, such as variability in functional connectivity or transient network states that form and dissolve over time. Addressing this gap, dynamic methods for analyzing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data estimate time-varying properties of brain functioning. In the context of resting-state neuroimaging, dynamic methods can rev

Bio-Inspired, Zwitterionic Copolymers with Amphiphilic Character.

Selectively targeting diseases with therapeutics remains a crucial yet still unsatisfied challenge in (nano)medicine. In recent years, a large body of biologically based drug carrier systems are produced which have proven to be suitable for the efficient transport of active compounds such as biopharmaceuticals and biotechnological drugs. However, those naturally occurring materials often entail risks, for example, due to accessible, functional groups created by uncontrolled protein denaturation processes of enzymes (e.g., proteases) which can lead to unwanted side effects in the body. To deal

Reactive Oxidative Species in Carotid Body Chemoreception: Their Role in Oxygen Sensing and Cardiorespiratory Alterations Induced by Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia.

The carotid body (CB) senses arterial PO2, PCO2, and pH levels, eliciting reflex responses to maintain cardiorespiratory homeostasis. Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), the hallmark of obstructive sleep apnea, elicits autonomic and cardiorespiratory alterations that are attributed to an enhanced CB chemosensory responsiveness to hypoxia, which in turn activates neurons and glial cells in the nucleus of the tractus solitarius (NTS). Although the CB contribution to the CIH-induced pathological alterations is well-known, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. A growing body of new e

Neural modulation of ocular immunity: Exploring a sympathetic-macrophage neuroimmune link in the human ciliary body.

The ciliary body (CB) represents an immunoregulatory compartment for the ocular system and we questioned whether local immune regulation in the CB in humans could be under neural control. In this study, we explored whether the human CB contains a sympathetic-macrophage neuroimmune link. Seven right eyes from donated cadavers (five male, two female) were enucleated. After removal of the cornea, lens, and vitreous body, each eye was divided into quadrants. One quadrant per eye was processed for light microscopy to assess overall morphology, general and sympathetic nerve presence, varicosities, m

Monkey multi-organ cell atlas exposed to estrogen.

Awareness of estrogen's effects on health is broadening rapidly. The effects of long-term high levels of estrogen on the body involve multiple organs. Here, we used both single-cell chromatin accessibility and RNA sequencing data to analyze the potential effect of estrogen on major organs. The integrated cell map enabled in-depth dissection and comparison of molecular dynamics, cell-type compositions, and cellular heterogeneity across multiple tissues and organs under estrogen stimulation. We also inferred pseudotime cell trajectories and cell-cell communications to uncover key molecular signa

Metabolic Rate and Egg Production in Japanese Quails Can Be Predicted by Assessing Growth Parameters of Laying Hens.

The aim of the current study was to assess the female metabolic rate and test the hypothesis that there is a relationship between the egg productivity of Japanese quails from eight breeds and their morphometric, or growth, parameters. Parameters measured were body weight (B), volume (V), and surface area (S), as well as the metabolism level expressed by the ratio S/V. The collected egg performance traits were as follows: the number of eggs produced (N), the average egg weight (W), and the total egg mass (M) (i.e., N multiplied by W). To measure the S and V values, a novel technique was develop

DeepLabCut-based daily behavioural and posture analysis in a cricket.

Circadian rhythms are indispensable intrinsic programs that regulate the daily rhythmicity of physiological processes, such as feeding and sleep. The cricket has been employed as a model organism for understanding the neural mechanisms underlying circadian rhythms in insects. However, previous studies measuring rhythm-controlled behaviours only analysed locomotive activity using seesaw-type and infrared sensor-based actometers. Meanwhile, advances in deep learning techniques have made it possible to analyse animal behaviour and posture using software that is devoid of human bias and does not r

Anabolic deficits and divergent unfolded protein response underlie skeletal and cardiac muscle growth impairments in the Yoshida hepatoma tumor model of cancer cachexia.

Cancer cachexia manifests as whole body wasting, however, the precise mechanisms governing the alterations in skeletal muscle and cardiac anabolism have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, we explored changes in anabolic processes in both skeletal and cardiac muscles in the Yoshida AH-130 ascites hepatoma model of cancer cachexia. AH-130 tumor-bearing rats experienced significant losses in body weight, skeletal muscle, and heart mass. Skeletal and cardiac muscle loss was associated with decreased ribosomal (r)RNA, and hypophosphorylation of the eukaryotic factor 4E binding protein 1. En

Body Composition and Senescence: Impact of Polyphenols on Aging-Associated Events.

Aging is a dynamic and progressive process characterized by the gradual accumulation of cellular damage. The continuous functional decline in the intrinsic capacity of living organisms to precisely regulate homeostasis leads to an increased susceptibility and vulnerability to diseases. Among the factors contributing to these changes, body composition-comprised of fat mass and lean mass deposits-plays a crucial role in the trajectory of a disability. Particularly, visceral and intermuscular fat deposits increase with aging and are associated with adverse health outcomes, having been linked to t

Carotid body interoception in health and disease.

Interoception entails perceiving or being aware of the internal state of the body, playing a pivotal role in regulating processes such as heartbeat, digestion, glucose metabolism, and respiration. The carotid body (CB) serves as an interoceptive organ, transmitting information to the brain via its sensitive nerve, the carotid sinus nerve, to maintain homeostasis. While traditionally known for sensing oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH levels, the CB is now recognized to possess additional interoceptive properties, detecting various mediators involved in blood pressure regulation, inflammation, and
