Professional Athletes Are Not at a Higher Risk of Infections After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: Incidence of Septic Arthritis, Additional Costs, and Clinical Outcomes From the French Prospective Anterior Cruciate Ligament Study (FAST) Cohort.

BACKGROUND: The rate of septic arthritis in the knee after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction varies in the literature but is generally less than 1%. It has been reported to be higher in professional athletes (5.7%). PURPOSE: The primary goal was to evaluate the rate of septic arthritis after ACL reconstruction in professional athletes compared with other patients. The secondary goals were to analyze the risk factors; increased cost of infections; return to sport, satisfaction, and functional results at 1-year follow-up; and resolution rate of infections at final follow-up. Preparedness, awareness and ownership of young future healthcare professionals are associated with their willingness to contribute to health system resilience in a NATO collective defense scenario: a cross-sectional study among medical, nursing and paramedic students in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Russia's war against Ukraine has renewed discussion about a possible NATO Article 5 collective defense scenario in Europe. In such a situation, Germany would function as key logistical and medical hub, placing substantial strain on its healthcare system. Experience from the COVID-19 pandemic suggests that health system resilience not only depends on infrastructure but also on availability and commitment of health professionals. This study examined willingness of future health professionals in Germany to contribute beyond routine duties in such a crisis and assessed preparedness, ow

Survey of Oral Feeding Practices Amongst Health Care Professionals for Infants Receiving Nasal Continuous-Positive Airway Pressure (nCPAP) and High Flow Nasal Canula (HFNC) Respiratory Support in the United Kingdom (UK).

There is international uncertainty and little guidance regarding oral feeding on nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) respiratory support. The aim of this study is to investigate current practice in the UK when deciding to offer oral feeds to infants on nCPAP/HFNC. A novel survey was designed and conducted using Qualtrics. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants in speech and language therapy, medicine and nursing via professional associations. Participants completed the 41-item survey which explored oral feeding practices for infants

Effects of a remote therapeutic education programme involving peers and health professionals on physical activity in patients with coronary heart disease undergoing phase 3 cardiac rehabilitation: protocol for a single-centre randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining a satisfactory level of physical activity (PA) after cardiovascular rehabilitation in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) is an important public health issue. However, more than half of patients do not maintain recommended levels of PA in the long term. There is growing interest in the use of cognitive-behavioural interventions that actively involve both health professionals and patients in education and research settings. We hypothesise that a personalised therapeutic education programme (PTEP) delivered by peers in collaboration with health professionals may

Large Language Models as a New Tool for Therapists in Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Blinded Clinician Rating Pilot Experiment.

BACKGROUND: Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) is an effective and scalable alternative to face-to-face psychotherapy, but its reach is constrained by the time therapists spend reviewing patient input and manually drafting written responses. Studies suggest that large language models (LLMs) may be capable of generating high-quality therapeutic text, with the potential to support therapists in delivering treatment. Their suitability as therapist-support tools in structured iCBT, however, remains insufficiently studied. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the quality of LLM-gen

Boundary modifications in the treatment of people with dissociative disorders: a pilot study.

This article examines the prevalence and types of modifications to professional boundaries that occur in the treatment of people with dissociative disorders (DDs) and considers some of the implications of the findings. The study is based on the replies of 163 professionals to a 20-question survey. The survey compared the boundaries that each practitioner kept with patients/clients (P/Cs) who suffered DDs to their boundary practice with all of their other P/Cs (non-DDs). Boundaries were deemed modified when professionals treated their DDs P/Cs differently than their other P/Cs. Professionals' g

Interpreting in healthcare: a systematic search and mapping of ethical issues in health literature.

Medical interpreters play a vital role in healthcare settings, ensuring effective communication between providers and their patients when language barriers exist. Interpreters can be ad hoc, such as family members, or individuals who have undergone formal training. We systematically searched and analyzed 112 medical, bioethics, and interpreting literature publications to answer the question: what ethical issues arise when trained medical interpreters are involved in patient care? Interpreting in a medical setting is a complex process that requires not just understanding medical terminology in

Optimal Care to Promote Flourishing: Articulating the Purpose of Pediatric Nephrology.

Pediatric nephrology is at a pivotal moment. As treatment advances have improved survival and clinical outcomes, families and clinicians increasingly call for a more holistic view of what it means to care well for children with kidney disease. Professional society mission statements, which emphasize a commitment to "optimal care for children with kidney disease," offer a foundation upon which to articulate that broader vision. In this perspective, we discuss what we think optimal care is not-an exclusive focus on cure, survival, and adult outcomes-and what optimal care is: promoting the flouri

Skill or Competency: What Should we be Assessing?

India introduced competency-based medical education (CBME) in the year 2019. There is often confusion between terms like ability, skill, and competency. The provided curriculum encourages teaching and assessing skills rather than competencies. Though competency includes skill, it is more than a mere skill, and ignoring the other aspects like communication, ethics, and professionalism can compromise the teaching of competencies as well as their intended benefits to the patient and the society. The focus on skills also undermines the assessment of relevant knowledge. This paper clarifies the dif

This is Our Lane: A Pilot Study Examining the Surgeon's Role in Social Justice Advocacy.

BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of social justice advocacy, surgeon attitudes toward individual involvement vary. We hypothesized that the majority of surgeons in this study, regardless of gender or training level, believe that surgeons should be involved in social justice movements. METHODS: A survey was distributed to surgical faculty and trainees at three academic tertiary care centers. Participation was anonymous with 123 respondents. Nurses as 'guests'--a study of a concept in light of Jacques Derrida's philosophy of hospitality.

As revealed in previous empirical research, nurses describe their position in home-based nursing care (HBNC) as that of 'guests' in the patient's home. Such a description is problematic as 'guests' might not be considered to belong to the realm of professionalism. As Jacques Derrida's work on hospitality has received wide publicity, sparking theoretical and philosophical discussion about host and guest, the aim of this study was to explore how the concept 'guests' can be understood in the light of Derrida's philosophy of hospitality. The study revealed that (a) guest must be considered a binar

Construction and evaluation of the knowledge graph and large model question-answering system for Jin San Zhen therapy: a tool study for primary care and general practice.

BACKGROUND: Jin San Zhen acupuncture therapy is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) school originating from the Lingnan region of China. It is widely used in China for central nervous system diseases, internal medical conditions, and various pain disorders, benefiting a large number of patients. However, the related clinical evidence and expert experience are scattered across journal articles and monographs, without systematic curation or structured presentation, making it difficult for frontline clinicians and trainees to access in a timely manner. How do patients and health care professionals perceive de-implementation of routine follow-ups after total hip or knee arthroplasty? Protocol for a nested qualitative study within a hybrid effectiveness de-implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Total hip and knee arthroplasties significantly improve the quality of life for patients with severe osteoarthritis. However, some patients experience complications that require follow-up care. Amid rising demand for these arthroplasties, debates have emerged around the value of routinely scheduled follow-ups (RFUs). This qualitative study, nested within a hybrid effectiveness de-implementation trial that assesses quantitative differences between RFU and check-ups on-demand (COD), will explore and compare the patients' and health care professionals' (HCPs) experiences with, and per
