Quality of life in Essential Tremor Questionnaire (QUEST): development and initial validation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Essential tremor (ET) can diminish functioning and quality of life (QOL) but generic QOL measures may be relatively insensitive to ET and its therapies. We sought to develop an ET-specific measure that might be more sensitive, acceptable to patients, relatively brief, and easily used. DESIGN/METHODS: A sample of 200 patients (average age 70 years, range 30-91; average disease duration 15 years) rated the extent to which tremor impacts a function or state, tremor severity in various body parts, perceived health, and overall QOL. Responses to this initial questionnaire wer

Backward inhibition in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease has been associated with executive dysfunction, especially task-switching deficits. One factor contributing to task-switching costs is backward inhibition, as measured by less efficient performance when switching back to a task from which one has recently switched away. This alternating-switch cost is considered to be due to persisting inhibition of elements of the previous task set after a switch. In this study, patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease and controls performed three tasks (A-C) in an intermixed fashion. Patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's di

Dyslexics are impaired on implicit higher-order sequence learning, but not on implicit spatial context learning.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by poor reading ability and impairments on a range of tasks including phonological processing and processing of sensory information. Some recent studies have found deficits in implicit sequence learning using the serial reaction time task, but others have not. Other skills, such as global visuo-spatial processing may even be enhanced in dyslexics, although deficits have also been noted. The present study compared dyslexic and non-dyslexic college students on two implicit learning tasks, an alternating serial response time task in which sequential depende

Early visual evoked potentials in callosal agenesis.

Three participants with callosal agenesis and 12 neurologically normal participants were tested on a simple reaction time task, with visual evoked potentials collected using a high-density 128-channel system. Independent-components analyses were performed on the averaged visual evoked potentials to isolate the components of interest. Contrary to previous research with acallosals, evidence of ipsilateral activation was present in all 3 participants. Although ipsilateral visual components were present in all 4 unilateral conditions in the 2 related acallosal participants, in the 3rd, these were

Knee joint kinaesthesia and neuromuscular coordination during three phases of the menstrual cycle in moderately active women.

An increased incidence of sports related injuries in the premenstrual phase as well as in the menstrual phase of the menstrual cycle has been described. This may be explained by alterations in proprioception and neuromuscular coordination due to hormonal variations. Prospective, within women analysis of knee joint kinesthesia and neuromuscular coordination were performed by repeated measures analysis of variance in three hormonally verified phases of three consecutive menstrual cycles. Thirty-two healthy, moderately active female subjects volunteered to participate in the study. Twenty-five of

Neurobehavioral and clinical effects in workers exposed to CS(2).

OBJECTIVES: Diffuse vascular encephalopathy, parkinsonism and peripheral polyneuropathy (PNP) due to CS(2) exposure are known since long. Data concerning low exposure are sparse. The current study aimed to evaluate whether the decrease of exposure below the threshold limit value (TLV) of 31 mg/m(3) results in an absence of neurological health effects using the same health outcomes as in the first study. METHODS: The study was conducted in a group of workers of a viscose rayon plant and a control group (CG, n=66). The exposed group was divided into two groups, according to the average CS(2) ex

Spared somatomotor and cognitive functions in a patient with a large porencephalic cyst revealed by fMRI.

To date functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has not been extensively used in presurgical evaluation of patients with intractable epilepsy. Patient S.P. presented with left frontal originating seizures, secondary to a large porencephalic cyst that encompassed much of his occipital and temporal cortex and a substantial portion of ipsilateral parietal cortex. Nevertheless, S.P. did not demonstrate any gross impairments of praxis or speech. Scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) telemetry revealed reduced background activity in the left hemisphere, an absence of identifiable normal sleep states

Extrastriate body area in human occipital cortex responds to the performance of motor actions.

A region in human lateral occipital cortex (the 'extrastriate body area' or EBA) has been implicated in the perception of body parts. Here we report functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) evidence that the EBA is strongly modulated by limb (arm, foot) movements to a visual target stimulus, even in the absence of visual feedback from the movement. Therefore, the EBA responds not only during the perception of other people's body parts, but also during goal-directed movements of the observer's body parts. In addition, both limb movements and saccades to a detected stimulus produced stronger

Sensory and response contributions to visual awareness in extinction.

Brain-damaged patients may extinguish contralesional stimuli when ipsilesional stimuli are presented simultaneously. Most theories of extinction postulate that stimuli compete for pathologically limited attentional resources with a bias to process ipsilesional over contralesional stimuli. Implicit in this view is the idea that responses follow the outcome of an earlier competition between inputs. In the current study of two patients, we used signal detection analyses to test the hypothesis that response criteria and response modalities also contribute to visual awareness. We found that identif

Abnormal brain activity in prefrontal brain regions in abstinent marijuana users.

We used PET (15)O and a modified version of the Stroop task to determine if 25-day abstinent heavy marijuana (MJ) users have persistent deficits in executive cognitive functioning (ECF) and brain activity. Performance on a modified version of the Stroop task and brain activity was compared between 25-day abstinent, heavy marijuana users (n = 11), and a matched comparison group (n = 11). The 25-day abstinent marijuana users showed no deficits in performance on the modified version of the Stroop task when compared to the comparison group. Despite the lack of performance differences, the marijuan

Preschool outcome of less than 801-gram preterm infants compared with full-term siblings.

OBJECTIVE: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants are at greater risk for neurodevelopmental delay than full-term infants. Outcomes may be compromised secondary to abnormal brain development associated with complications of prematurity. Long-term cognitive outcome has also been reported to be significantly influenced by postnatal factors. The objective of this study was to clarify the effects of prematurity separate from environmental factors on growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes by comparing ELBW children with their full-term siblings. METHODS: The study consisted of 25 ELBW children,

Baseline plasma GABA: its relationship to the adverse effects of acute lorazepam administration on cognition in the elderly.

The GABA system is an active target for drugs to treat a variety of disorders and the availability of an indirect measure of central GABA activity would not only enhance psychiatric research, but also permit assessment of the pharmacodynamic effects of drugs designed to act on this system. The relationships between plasma baseline pre-drug GABA concentrations and cognitive impairments induced by an acute oral dose of lorazepam (0.5 and 1.0 mg) were investigated in 22 healthy elderly individuals. Partial correlations controlling for plasma lorazepam concentrations revealed no significant relati

Task-dependent visual coding of sound position in visuospatial neglect patients.

Recent neurophysiological evidence has shown that sound position can be coded in multiple frames of reference in the animal brain (i.e. head-centred, eye-centred, or intermediate head/eye centred). Here, we provide evidence for multiple coding of sound positions in humans, by studying pointing to sounds in 14 right brain-damaged (RBD) patients with or without visual neglect (a visuospatial neurological disturbance typically affecting contralesional space). Patients were asked to indicate the position of free-field sounds, either with a hand-pointing or with a head-turning response. Pointing mo

Hand function in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy: prospective follow-up and functional outcome in adolescence.

The aim of this prospective study was to determine the outcome of affected hand impairment and disability in a group of 31 children (16 males, 15 females) with hemiplegic cerebral palsy who were referred consecutively to our rehabilitation service and followed from a mean age of 2 years and 7 months to a mean age of 12 years and 9 months. The hand function assessment protocol consisted of video-recorded procedures: one to assess grip and the other to assess the extent of spontaneous use of the affected hand. Assessments at outset and at latest follow-up showed that the series as a whole had gr

Entorhinal inputs to dentate gyrus are activated mainly by conditioned events with long time intervals.

Brain mechanisms of mammalian learning and memory have long been associated with the hippocampus. Although the role of the hippocampus in spatial behavior is well established, there is no general consensus on the function of the hippocampus in nonspatial tasks. Task-related changes in evoked potentials were first reported by Deadwyler and colleagues in the dentate gyrus, with a peak at 100 ms in rats trained in an auditory discrimination task (Deadwyler et al., Brain Res 161:211-225, 1979). Surprisingly, these results have not been confirmed by other investigators. In the present report, we se

Effects of a biocybernetic system on vigilance performance.

The present study was designed to determine whether a biocybernetic, adaptive system could enhance vigilance performance. Participants were asked to monitor the repetitive presentation of white bars on a computer screen for occasional increases in length. An index of task engagement was derived from participants' electroencephalographic (EEG) activity and was used to change the presentation rate of events among 3 values (6, 20, and 60 events/min). Under a negative feedback contingency, event rates increased if the engagement index decreased and, conversely, decreased if the index increased. Un

Sensorimotor functions in transgenic mice expressing the neurofilament/heavy-LacZ fusion protein on two genetic backgrounds.

NFH-LacZ transgenic mice are characterized by expression of a non-endogenous fusion protein between a truncated form of mouse NFH (neurofilament of heavy molecular weight) and the complete Escherichia coli beta-galactosidase protein. These transgenic mice were compared to their respective controls on two background strains (C3H and FVB) in several sensorimotor tests. NFH-LacZ mice were deficient in tests requiring balance and equilibrium in a manner generally independent of genetic background. In particular, NFH-LacZ mice fell more quickly than controls from two stationary beams and had fewer

Place and matching-to-place spatial learning affected by rat inbreeding (Dark-Agouti, Fischer 344) and albinism (Wistar, Sprague-Dawley) but not domestication (wild rat vs. Long-Evans, Fischer-Norway).

Domestication has been shown to produce a shift in both morphological and behavioral characteristics of animals. While changes in body weight, brain size, reproductive rates, and temperament are well documented, the effects of domestication on learning and memory are not as clearly understood. This issue is of particular importance to the use of rodent models in learning and memory where the domestication of Rattus norvegicus for research has resulted in the availability of numerous strains. To investigate cognitive effects resulting frm domestication, we examined the spatial performance of a

Interhemispheric neural summation in the split brain with symmetrical and asymmetrical displays.

The present study, investigates interhemispheric integration in the split brain. Four split-brained, two acallosal and 14 normal subjects carried out a simple reaction time task in which they responded to stimuli presented either singly in the left visual field, singly in the right visual field, or simultaneously in both visual fields. Stimuli were white against a black background and bilateral stimuli were either symmetrical or asymmetrical around the central vertical meridian. For unilateral stimuli, the difference in response time (RT) between crossed and uncrossed hand-field combinations (
