Centering Cultural Approaches in Community-Based Participatory Research to Address the Black Maternal Health Crisis.

INTRODUCTION: Black women in Georgia are more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications during the postpartum period than other their non-Black counterparts. Developing effective solutions to address this public health crisis requires strengthened partnerships between researchers and community-based organizations, with the voices of Black women being at the center of the research and innovation. This study examined perspectives of community-advisory board members on a community-based participatory research approach that addresses adverse postpartum health outcomes for Black women livi

Exploring social support for eating disorders in Indigenous contexts.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of cultural and ethnic background. However, culturally situated understandings of eating disorders are important for optimizing care. Moreover, social support is widely recognized as a key component in the recovery of eating disorders. Established Euro-Western treatment models generally conceptualize social support as the role family and close friends play in providing emotional and practical support during a loved one's recovery. Indigenous perspectives of social support, which may include connection to ancestors, community, non-human

Whose Autonomy Matters? Using Relational Autonomy to Analyze Caregiver Roles in Decision-Making for Cancer Clinical Trials.

BACKGROUND: Participation in a therapeutic clinical trial can be a challenging decision for patients with cancer and their family caregivers. Despite the implications of clinical trials for caregivers, there is little empirical research about how caregivers participate in clinical trial decision-making. This qualitative study sought to identify how caregivers view their role in these decisions and the attitudes and experiences of clinical trial staff regarding inclusion of caregivers in the informed consent process. METHODS: We performed four focus groups-two with clinical trial staff and two

Developing an adaptive paediatric intensive care unit platform trial with key stakeholders: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Platform trials were used successfully in adult populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. By testing multiple treatments within a single trial, platform trials can help identify the most effective treatments (and any interactions between treatments) for patients more quickly and with less burden for patients and their families. The aim of this qualitative research was to inform the design of the first adaptive platform trial for paediatric intensive care in the UK with young people, parents/carers and paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) staff. DESIGN: Qualitative semistructured

Increasing Social Connection in Permanent Supportive Housing: A Participatory Study on Therapeutic Recreation for People With Experiences of Homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social exclusion and isolation due to homelessness are compounded in older people by physical frailty and stigma. Interventions to support older people with experiences of homelessness often neglect social dimensions of well-being. In this participatory action research study, residents, staff, and researchers collaborated to develop, implement, and evaluate therapeutic recreation programming in a permanent supportive housing facility for older people with experiences of homelessness (n = 68). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A community advisory group, "The Exchange," c

Rollout of rapid point of care tests for antenatal syphilis screening in Ghana: healthcare provider perspectives and experiences.

BACKGROUND: Effective implementation of rapid point of care tests (POCTs) for antenatal syphilis screening especially in settings where antenatal care attendance is high, can significantly increase screening coverage and treatment uptake. The operational challenges of introducing rapid syphilis POCTs at scale needs to be investigated. This study explores healthcare providers' experiences and challenges in antenatal syphilis screening following the national rollout of rapid syphilis POCTs in Ghana. METHODS: Prior to the main study, we undertook a desk review of key syphilis policy documents, a

Equipoise across the patient population: optimising recruitment to a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: This paper proposes a novel perspective on the value of qualitative research for improving trial design and optimising recruitment. We report findings from a qualitative study set within the OPEN trial, a surgical randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing two interventions for recurrent bulbar urethral stricture, a common cause of urinary problems in men. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with men meeting trial eligibility criteria (n = 19) to explore reasons for accepting or declining participation and with operating urologists (n = 15) to explore trial acceptability. UK Dog Owners' Pre-Acquisition Information- and Advice-Seeking: A Mixed Methods Study.

Dogs are the most common pet animal species in the UK. Little is known about information and advice gathering within the process of dog acquisition, nor what pre-acquisition research encompasses. This study aimed to better understand the preparatory research undertaken by prospective dog owners in the UK. A 2019 online survey collected quantitative and qualitative data about dog acquisition. Analyses within this study focused on a subset of these current (n = 4381) and potential (n = 2350) owners who had undertaken research, or who reported planning to do so, before acquiring a dog. Additional

Patient perspectives of quality of life in chronic limb-threatening ischemia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QOL) is an outcome that matters to patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). However, we identified the lack of and need for a CLTI-specific QOL instrument. Our group is developing this instrument which requires a deep understanding of patient perspectives of QOL in CLTI. METHODS: Qualitative inquiry with patient and public involvement was performed in accordance with the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research. Reflexive thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews was conducted within a constructivist-interpretivist research paradigm. Data

What were you thinking?: individuals at risk for Huntington Disease talk about having children.

Most of the research on reproduction in those at risk for Huntington Disease (HD) has focused on the impact of genetic testing on reproductive decision-making. The main goal has been to determine whether discovering one is a carrier of the HD mutation changes an individual's or couple's decision to start a family or to have more children. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine reproductive decision-making in a sample of individuals at risk for HD who have chosen not to pursue genetic testing. PHAROS (Prospective Huntington At Risk Observational Study) is a multi-site study that a

Connecting to Cognition: A Methodological Journey With Urban Dementia.

Contemporary sociological developments spanning the ontological turn, post-cognitivism, biosocial transdisciplinarity, post-qualitative inquiry, and new empiricism are opening up novel sites of methodological contention regarding the nature of cognition as a research object. While these developments are conceptually stimulating, their (potential) overlapping methodological implications are under-explicated. Outlining a moving ethnography of urban transport use by passengers with dementia, in this article I delve into the more pragmatic methodological contingencies of attempts to engage with co

The views and experiences of nurses and midwives in the provision and management of provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling: a systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Global progress towards HIV prevention and care is contingent upon increasing the number of those aware of their status through HIV testing. Provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling is recommended globally as a strategy to enhance uptake of HIV testing and is primarily conducted by nurses and midwives. Research shows that provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling implementation is sub-optimal. The reasons for this are unclear. OBJECTIVES: The review aimed to explore nurses' and midwives' views and experiences of the provision and management of provider-initiated HIV testi

Task-sharing with community health workers to treat hypertension: a scoping review.

Many studies have implemented and evaluated task-sharing interventions with community health workers (CHWs) to manage hypertension. To identify gaps in research, we conducted a scoping review. We searched original articles published in PubMed and EMBASE between 2010 and 2022 and found 122 articles meeting our inclusion criteria. Only seven articles were from low-income countries (LICs), most of which were qualitative studies or mixed methods studies. In the identified 122 articles, CHWs often performed health education (61.3%) and measured blood pressure (60.4%). Whereas CHWs carried out pharm
