Effects of external helmet accessories on biomechanical measures of head injury risk: An ATD study using the HYBRIDIII headform.

Competitive cycling is a popular activity in North America for which injuries to the head account for the majority of hospitalizations and fatalities. In cycling, use of helmet accessories (e.g. cameras) has become widespread. As a consequence, standards organizations and the popular media are discussing the role these accessories could play in altering helmet efficacy and head injury risk. We conducted impacts to a helmeted anthropomorphic headform, with and without camera accessories, at speeds of 4m/s and 6m/s, and measured head accelerations, forces on the head-form skull, and used the Sim

3D of Brain Shape and Volume After Cranial Vault Remodeling Surgery for Craniosynostosis Correction in Infants.

The skull of young children is made up of bony plates that enable growth. Craniosynostosis is a birth defect that causes one or more sutures on an infant's skull to close prematurely. Corrective surgery focuses on cranial and orbital rim shaping to return the skull to a more normal shape. Functional problems caused by craniosynostosis such as speech and motor delay can improve after surgical correction, but a post-surgical analysis of brain development in comparison with age-matched healthy controls is necessary to assess surgical outcome. Full brain segmentations obtained from pre- and post-o

Update on craniofacial surgery: the differential diagnosis of lambdoid synostosis/posterior plagiocephaly.

There has been an evolution of thought on the diagnosis and treatment of posterior plagiocephaly. Synostotic posterior plagiocephaly (lambdoid synostosis) can be diagnosed and differentiated from non-synostotic posterior plagiocephaly (positional molding) based on specific cosmetic and radiologic criteria. The advent of high-resolution three-dimensional CT analysis of cranial morphology combined with meticulous clinical studies of the two major causes of posterior plagiocephaly has added much to our understanding of this skull deformity. Children with lambdoid synostosis have a trapezoid-shape

Improved Quantification of MicroPET/CT Imaging Using CT-derived Scaling Factors.

PURPOSE: Combined micro-PET/CT scanners are widely employed to investigate models of brain disorders in rodents using PET-based coregistration. We examined if CT-based coregistration could improve estimates of brain dimensions and consequently estimates of nondisplaceable binding potential (BPND) in rodent PET studies. PROCEDURES: PET and CT scans were acquired on 5 female and 5 male CD-1 mice with PET and CT scans were acquired on 5 female and 5 male CD-1 mice with 3-[18F]fluoro-5-(2-pyridinylethynyl)benzonitrile ([18F]FPEB), a radiotracer for the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5 (m

A proposed morphological and metric method for three-dimensional nasal reconstruction.

Forensic anthropology is the application of the knowledge and methods of physical anthropology in a medico-legal context. The unknown skeletal remains are examined to assess and assist in identifying them. When conventional methods fail, facial reconstruction is often the last recourse attempted for identifying an unknown skull. A partial nasal bridge, a small anterior nasal spine, with a large hollowed space are all that are present on a skull representing the nose. Hence, it is a challenging task for a forensic scientist to build a soft nose based on the scant available bony structure. The p

Spring assisted cranioplasty: A patient specific computational model.

Implantation of spring-like distractors in the treatment of sagittal craniosynostosis is a novel technique that has proven functionally and aesthetically effective in correcting skull deformities; however, final shape outcomes remain moderately unpredictable due to an incomplete understanding of the skull-distractor interaction. The aim of this study was to create a patient specific computational model of spring assisted cranioplasty (SAC) that can help predict the individual overall final head shape. Pre-operative computed tomography images of a SAC patient were processed to extract a 3D mode

Shape and volume of craniofacial cavities in intentional skull deformations.

Intentional cranial deformations (ICD) have been observed worldwide but are especially prevalent in preColombian cultures. The purpose of this study was to assess the consequences of ICD on three cranial cavities (intracranial cavity, orbits, and maxillary sinuses) and on cranial vault thickness, in order to screen for morphological changes due to the external constraints exerted by the deformation device. We acquired CT-scans for 39 deformed and 19 control skulls. We studied the thickness of the skull vault using qualitative and quantitative methods. We computed the volumes of the orbits, of

Gene expression profiling in human craniosynostoses: a tool to investigate the molecular basis of suture ossification.

INTRODUCTION: Non-syndromic craniosynostoses (NSC) occur as isolated skull malformations due to the premature ossification of one (single-suture forms) or more (complex forms) calvarial sutures and represent the most frequent form of craniosynostosis worldwide. The etiology of NSC is still largely unknown as a genetic basis can be rarely demonstrated especially in single-suture forms. In these cases, during the prenatal/perinatal development of affected patients, only one suture undergoes a premature direct ossification within an otherwise physiologically grown skull. This could suggest that d

Targeted therapy in recurrent clival chordoma: a case report of response to ivosidenib.

Genetic and molecular alterations in cancer cells can serve as therapeutic targets and enable more precise, individualized treatment strategies. In rare tumors with limited systemic treatment options, molecular profiling may help identify therapeutic opportunities when conventional approaches are exhausted. We report the case of a 72-year-old woman with a long-standing, multiply recurrent clival chordoma and no remaining surgical or radiation options who experienced a meaningful clinical and metabolic response to targeted therapy. Comprehensive tumor molecular profiling identified an activatin

Clinical Reasoning: Episodes of Uncontrollable Crying in a 52-Year-Old Man With a Sphenopetroclival Tumor.

A 52-year-old man presented with progressive gait disturbances. MRI demonstrated a large extra-axial tumor in the cerebellopontine angle compressing the brainstem and resulting in hydrocephalus. While taking the patient's history, episodes of uncontrollable crying with sudden onset occurred multiple times. In this case report, we present and discuss the differential diagnoses of episodes of uncontrollable crying without emotional affect in adults and the possible underlying etiology.

Ectopic clival craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngiomas are rare, benign tumors with a bimodal age distribution, typically found in children and older adults. They arise along the craniopharyngeal tract, often in the intra- or suprasellar regions, and may compress adjacent structures, causing diverse symptoms. Diagnosis is primarily MRI-based, revealing heterogeneous mass with cystic and solid elements. Chordoma, another rare tumor, arises from notochordal remnants, often in the sacrum or clivus, and displays distinct imaging characteristics like T2 hyperintensity and bony destruction. This report discusses a rare ectopic clival

Endonasal transsphenoidal surgery for planum sphenoidale versus tuberculum sellae meningiomas.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine if the distinction between planum sphenoidale (PS) and tuberculum sellae (TS) meningiomas is clinically meaningful and impacts the results of the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA). METHODS: A consecutive series of patients who were 18 years of age or older and underwent EEA for newly diagnosed grade I PS meningiomas (PSMs) and TS meningiomas (TSMs) between October 2007 and May 2021 were included. The PS and TS were distinguished by drawing a line passing through the center of the TS and perpendicular to the PS on postcontrast T1-weighted MRI

Keyhole surgery for giant basal brain tumors. Theoretical explanation with an example of trans-eyebrow subraorbital approach.

BACKGROUND: Improvement of modern neurosurgical technology has given rise to keyhole surgery for a wide range of pathologies. Supraorbital trans-eyebrow approach has been described in detail for small tumors of anterior cranial fossa and suprasellar neoplasms. Can we use this small and less traumatic approach for a more complex tumor extending beyond the suprasellar region? OBJECTIVE: To analyze own experience of surgical treatment of large and giant parasellar tumors via supraorbital approach, to identify the principles of such operations, indications and possible limitations. [Transcranial microsurgical decompression of the optic canal in surgical treatment of meningiomas of the sellar region].

RATIONALE: When removing the meningiomas of the sellar region, there is always a risk of visual impairment for various reasons, in particular, as a result of traction damage to the optic nerve. Decompression of the optic canal increases nerve mobility during tumor manipulation. In cases of meningioma growing into the canal, its decompression often seems necessary. AIM: Evaluation of the effectiveness and risks of performing decompression of the optic canal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included patients with meningiomas of the parasellar location, who underwent surgical treatment at the

[Pituitary gland tumors].

BACKGROUND: In this article, the most common pituitary gland tumors and the various differential diagnoses with focus on (neuro-)radiological diagnostic criteria are presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An intensive, selective search of the literature in PubMed was carried out. RESULTS: Pituitary adenomas account for approximately 10-15% of all intracranial brain tumors and are the most common tumors of the sellar region. Beyond a size of 10 mm they are called macroadenomas, under 10 mm microadenomas. They can be distinguished into hormone-active and non-active adenomas. Most of the hormone-act
