How to deal with emotional abuse and neglect: further development of a conceptual framework (FRAMEA).

OBJECTIVE: To develop further the understanding of emotional abuse and neglect. METHODS: Building on previous work, this paper describes the further development of a conceptual framework for the recognition and management of emotional abuse and neglect. Training in this framework is currently being evaluated. The paper also briefly reviews more recent work on aspects of the definition, harm caused by emotional abuse and neglect and threshold. RESULTS: The paper arrives at a working definition as 'persistent, non-physical, harmful interactions with the child by the caregiver, which include bo

Evaluating an interprofessional team coaching program to promote a human-centered ICU environment.

BACKGROUND: Technology-driven ICU environments can be dehumanizing for critically ill patients, their families, and team members who care for them. Prior educational efforts to humanize the ICU have focused on training clinicians to provide human-centered care for patients and families, with relatively little attention on promoting human-centered environments for team members. OBJECTIVE: We used the framework of team coaching to develop an interprofessional educational program focused on humanizing the ICU. We sought to evaluate whether this program improves participants' perceived capability

The psychiatric ward environment and nursing observations at night: A qualitative study.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Nursing observations at night are conducted on psychiatric wards to ensure the safety and well-being of patients as well as to reduce the risk of suicide or severe harm. To our knowledge, no studies have examined the lived experience of the psychiatric ward environment and of nursing observations at night. WHAT DOES THE PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: The main complaint from patients was the constant interruption of their sleep, as most of the patients in this study were observed 2-4 times an hour. Their sleep was interrupted by (a) the light from torches shone

Palliative care: navigating the nurse's evolving role.

Palliative care is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by a global ageing population, a corresponding rise in chronic conditions and a growing need for integration across health and social care settings. Nurses are considered the primary providers of palliative care, supporting people with life-limiting illnesses in the home, hospital, care home and hospice environments. This article explores two domains that support a person-centred approach to palliative care: developing knowledge and skills; and leading and influencing care. The author identifies ways to develop and strengthen n

Training the algorithm: Agency and algorithmic injustice in Instagram's 'whitewashed' health and fitness spaces.

Research on women's body image has often focused on the potential harms associated with engaging with health and fitness content on Instagram. Recently, scholars have turned their attention to exploring women's agency in relation to social media to examine how particular groups of individuals participate in the curation of their online worlds in pursuit of a positive body image. In particular, we consider the experiences of specific racial groups who are interacting with what some claim are 'whitewashed' and algorithmically biased digital environments. We aim to contribute to this enquiry by d

Interdisciplinary Cooperation in Technical, Medical, and Social Sciences: A Focus on Creating Accessibility.

Accessibility and Universal Design (UD) is an area of professional interest for architects and occupational therapists, but college curricula rarely include both broader and collaborative education in this area. This article presents the experience of the inter-university, interdisciplinary project "Joint Architecture Initiative" (JAI), with the participation of students from the University of Science and Technology, University of Health and Sport Science, and Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw (Poland). The JAI project is a response of the university community of Wroclaw to the social-urban camp

The flexibility of Apicomplexa parasites in lipid metabolism.

Apicomplexa are obligate intracellular parasites responsible for major human infectious diseases such as toxoplasmosis and malaria, which pose social and economic burdens around the world. To survive and propagate, these parasites need to acquire a significant number of essential biomolecules from their hosts. Among these biomolecules, lipids are a key metabolite required for parasite membrane biogenesis, signaling events, and energy storage. Parasites can either scavenge lipids from their host or synthesize them de novo in a relict plastid, the apicoplast. During their complex life cycle (sex

Can Everyday Assistive Technologies Provide Meaningful Support to Persons With Dementia and Their Informal Caregivers? Evaluation of Collaborative Community Program.

One of the most challenging caregiving roles today is providing informal care to an individual with dementia. A new program, "AT-Home with Dementia," was created by three collaborative social service agencies to offer simple assistive technologies to persons with dementia and their informal caregivers. Staff, equipped with a traveling kit of everyday devices, offered items during home visits to enhance memory, functional activities, safety, and comfort of persons with dementia. A limited formative program review led to improvements in the new program's reach, service delivery, and data. The re

Views on disability and prenatal testing among families with Down syndrome and disability activists: A comparative analysis of interviews from Germany and Israel.

The prenatal genetic testing arena has witnessed great changes over the past decades and has been the focus of extensive discussion of its ethical, legal, and social implications. Germany and Israel were previously known for strongly contrasting regulations and attitudes of both professionals and laypeople towards genetic testing. Based on qualitative analysis of 37 semi-structured interviews, this study compares German and Israeli family members of individuals with Down syndrome and disability activists, thereby examining the interplay between lived experience and cultural scripts and their i

A nursing metaparadigm perspective of diabetic foot ulcer care.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious complication of diabetes that impact on the patient, their social environment, overall health, and on nursing practice. Nursing scholars have integrated theories on practice to overcome these problems, but a lack of agreement in the available literature acts as a barrier to implementing these in practice. For that reason, using a nursing metaparadigm as a theoretical framework would assist nurses in managing care purposefully and proactively, thus possibly improving outcomes. There has been little discussion about the nursing metaparadigm in relation t

Homicide in a Horse Barn?

As forensic scientists and physicians, forensic pathologists are duty-bound to perform their examinations with integrity and professionalism. The practice of medicine requires knowledge regarding the history and presentation of the patient. In forensic pathology, the history includes scene and other investigative information, and the decedent's medical and social history. Such information is important for the correct certification of the cause and manner of death. Herein, the authors present a case originally thought by police and death investigators to represent a sexual-assault-related homic

Virtual Reality in Pediatric Psychology.

Virtual reality (VR) technologies allow for controlled simulations of affectively engaging background narratives. These virtual environments offer promise for enhancing emotionally relevant experiences and social interactions. Within this context, VR can allow instructors, therapists, neuropsychologists, and service providers to offer safe, repeatable, and diversifiable interventions that can benefit assessments and learning in both typically developing children and children with disabilities. Research has also pointed to VR's capacity to reduce children's experience of aversive stimuli and re

Neurasthenia at Mengo Hospital, Uganda: A case study in psychiatry and a diagnosis, 1906-50.

This article uses a case-study approach to examine the complex and contradictory nature of diagnoses like neurasthenia in colonial Africa. Drawing on the case notes of European and African patients diagnosed with neurasthenia at the Church Missionary Society's Mengo Hospital, Uganda, it argues that in practice, and outside the colonial asylum in particular, ideas about race and mental illness were more nuanced than histories of psychiatry and empire might imply. At Mengo, the tales of pain and suffering recorded by the doctors remind us that there is more to the history of neurasthenia than co

State-dependent and environmental modulation of brain hyperthermic effects of psychoactive drugs of abuse.

Hyperthermia is a known effect induced by psychomotor stimulants and pathological hyperthermia is a prominent symptom of acute intoxication with these drugs in humans. In this manuscript, I will review our recent work concerning the brain hyperthermic effects of several known and recently appeared psychostimulant drugs of abuse (cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, methylone, and MDPV). Specifically, I will consider the role of activity state and environmental conditions in modulating the brain temperature effects of these drugs and their acute toxicity. Although some of these drugs are structurall

Role of cytochrome P450s in insecticide resistance: impact on the control of mosquito-borne diseases and use of insecticides on Earth.

The fight against diseases spread by mosquitoes and other insects has enormous environmental, economic and social consequences. Chemical insecticides remain the first line of defence but the control of diseases, especially malaria and dengue fever, is being increasingly undermined by insecticide resistance. Mosquitoes have a large repertoire of P450s (over 100 genes). By pinpointing the key enzymes associated with insecticide resistance we can begin to develop new tools to aid the implementation of control interventions and reduce their environmental impact on Earth. Recent technological advan

Communication challenges for chronic metastatic cancer in an era of novel therapeutics.

Advances in the production of novel therapies for cancer management are creating new challenges for the support of increasing numbers of persons surviving for extended periods with advanced disease. Despite incurable and life-limiting metastatic conditions, these patients are living longer with serious disease, pushing the boundaries of what science explains and clinicians can confidently interpret using available evidence. Here we report findings from an early subset of such individuals within a longitudinal qualitative cancer cohort study on clinician-patient communication across the cancer

Parent and family outcomes following very preterm or very low birth weight birth: a review.

Parents and the family environment have a pronounced influence on child development. For children at increased risk such as those born very preterm (VPT) or with very low birth weight (VLBW), parent and family functioning can influence the child's level of risk or resilience. This review describes parent and family outcomes after VPT/VLBW birth, specifically parental mental health, parenting stress and the impact of the child on the family. Factors associated with these outcomes are examined, as well as the specific outcomes for fathers. Overall the influence of VPT/VLBW birth on parents and t

Sexual differentiation of the human brain: relation to gender identity, sexual orientation and neuropsychiatric disorders.

During the intrauterine period a testosterone surge masculinizes the fetal brain, whereas the absence of such a surge results in a feminine brain. As sexual differentiation of the brain takes place at a much later stage in development than sexual differentiation of the genitals, these two processes can be influenced independently of each other. Sex differences in cognition, gender identity (an individual's perception of their own sexual identity), sexual orientation (heterosexuality, homosexuality or bisexuality), and the risks of developing neuropsychiatric disorders are programmed into our b

Knowledge, attitudes and practices towards malaria among primary school pupils in Ndirande, Blantyre, Malawi.

A qualitative cross-sectional study was conducted at Ndirande Primary School in the peri-urban area of Blantyre, Malawi in 2002. The aim was to describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices towards malaria among pupils. Forty pupils (20 boys and 20 girls) were recruited into four focus group discussions. There was very good knowledge about the role of the female Anopheles mosquito as an agent for transmission of malaria. Respondents were also aware of the clinical features of malaria and what measures could be taken to prevent the disease. However, the survey showed that many of the environm

Nepal: ICPD spurs changes in policies.

The adoption of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Program of Action by Nepal has spurred a number of changes to improve the population situation in that country, according to the country report presented at the High-Level Meeting. One of the most important of these was the establishment of the Ministry for Population and Environment in 1995. As a result, a number of policies and programs concerning the population and health sector have been formulated and implemented. These are considered important because social and economic development is at a low level in Nep
