How Social Environment Shapes Pre-Death Grief Experiences in Dementia Caregiving: A Qualitative Study.

Caregivers of persons living with dementia experience significant losses as they witness the progressive cognitive decline and personality changes of their loved ones while managing substantial caregiving responsibilities. This results in pre-death grief, which is a multifaceted response to the losses experienced. Although pre-death grief is traditionally conceptualized as an intrapersonal and dyadic phenomenon, this study examines how social environments shape caregivers' grief experiences. Through semi-structured interviews with 33 dementia caregivers in Singapore, we identified 11 distinct

Brazilian Psychiatric Association guidelines for the treatment of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders, is not well recognized. In most cases, SAD follows an unremitted and chronic course, affecting individual functioning in relationships, education, and work. Due to the disorder's relevance in Brazil, guideline-based treatments adapted to the Brazilian social and economic context are needed. We conducted a systematic review assessing several treatment modalities for SAD. PubMed, Cochrane, SciELO, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched using the Medical Subject Headings social anxiety disorder and social phobia. Of the 438

Achieving pregnancy safely for HIV-serodiscordant couples: a social ecological approach.

The recognition and fulfilment of the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of all individuals and couples affected by HIV, including HIV-serodiscordant couples, requires intervention strategies aimed at achieving safe and healthy pregnancies and preventing undesired pregnancies. Reducing risk of horizontal and vertical transmission and addressing HIV-related infertility are key components of such interventions. In this commentary, we present challenges and opportunities for achieving safe pregnancies for serodiscordant couples through a social ecological lens. At the individual lev

Episodic memory differences in social and non-social contexts.

Humans use existing knowledge to predict and recall events. As a social species, it has been argued that humans preferentially process and recall social information. Individuals then should be better at using prior knowledge of actors' character traits to predict and remember their behaviour in social contexts compared to predicting and remembering trait-consequence associations in non-social contexts. To test this hypothesised social episodic memory advantage, we modified a social episodic memory paradigm to include a social and non-social condition. 215 participants (18-65 years; 43% female)

Identifying parent-sibling socialization profiles and their prospective associations with adolescents' interpersonal competence.

Family socialization plays a key role in adolescents' social development, yet little is known about how adolescents are socialized across different family subsystems beyond parental socialization. By using latent profile analysis to capture a holistic view of co-occurring family dynamics, this study aimed to identify different emotion socialization patterns in parent-adolescent and sibling subsystems and their longitudinal associations with adolescent interpersonal competence. Participants were 175 families with at least two children (target adolescent Mage = 14.09, 47.4% female). At baseline

Activity and social correlates of physical fitness in Lithuanian schoolchildren.

Physical fitness (PF) is an important marker of health and well-being. This study aimed to quantify associations of social environment and physical activity (PA) related factors with different aspects of PF among adolescents. The cross-sectional study included 4925 (51% girls) schoolchildren aged 11-18 years. Participants were tested for PF using the Eurofit battery (covering 8 aspects of PF), with their social environment (parents' education, family's and friends' support for PA), personal motivation for PA, actual PA level, and sports participation status were self-reported. Age- and sex- ad

Complexity of Adherence Challenges: Understanding Syndemic Factors Affecting HIV Treatment Adherence During Treatment Initiation in Cape Town, South Africa.

People living with HIV and beginning antiretroviral therapy (ART) often struggle with medication adherence and attending appointments due to multi-level challenges such as depression symptoms, substance use, stigma and disclosure, food insecurity, health system challenges, transportation challenges, and gender inequity. The SUSTAIN trial seeks to improve initiation adherence through multiple monitoring and support interventions in three clinics in Mitchells Plain township, Cape Town, South Africa. We qualitatively explored the multi-level challenges impacting adherence at the individual, inter

Social Networks and Cardiovascular Disease Events in the Jackson Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) disproportionately affects Black adults. Greater social networks (SNs), or social connectedness, may lower the risk of CVD events. This study determined the association of SNs and incident CVD and tested mediation by depressive symptoms, hypertension control, and diabetes control. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used the Social Network Index at exam 1 (2000-2004) to develop a continuous standardized SN score and binary categories (high versus low) among participants in the Jackson Heart Study (n=4686; mean age, 54.8 years). Treatment adherence amongst drug users attending public and private methadone maintenance clinics in a northern province of Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) has been proven to be effective in improving health status and the quality of life of illicit drug users. Due to the quick expand of methadone program, socialization through co-payment service is a critical to the success of it. In Nam Dinh, Vietnam, MMT has been used in public clinics and one private clinic. Such effectiveness of this treatment has been found to depend largely on adherence to treatment. This study aims to explore the compliance rate and its influencing factors among drug users between public and private clinics in Nam Dinh pro

Quantification and correlates of tuberculosis stigma along the tuberculosis testing and treatment cascades in South Africa: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: South Africa has one of the world's worst tuberculosis (TB) (520 per 100 000 population) and TB-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemics (~ 56% TB/HIV co-infected). While individual- and system-level factors influencing progression along the TB cascade have been identified, the impact of stigma is underexplored and underappreciated. We conducted an exploratory study to 1) describe differences in perceived community-level TB stigma among community members, TB presumptives, and TB patients, and 2) identify factors associated with TB stigma levels among these groups. METHODS: A c

Factors influencing postnatal Option B+ participation and breastfeeding duration among HIV-positive women in Lilongwe District, Malawi: A qualitative study.

To ensure the health of mothers and children, prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) programs test women for HIV, engage HIV-positive women in care, and promote recommended breastfeeding practices. Under Malawi's Option B+ PMTCT program, ~20% of women are lost-to-follow-up (LTFU) and little is known about their breastfeeding practices. The purpose of this study is to describe facilitators and barriers to Option B+ participation and how participation influences breastfeeding duration. We conducted in-depth interviews with HIV-positive women in Option B+ (n = 32) or LTFU from Opt

Comparing Psychosocial Correlates of Condomless Anal Sex in HIV-Diagnosed and HIV-Nondiagnosed Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Series of Meta-Analyses of Studies from 1993-2013.

PURPOSE: Men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to be overrepresented in rates of incidence and prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Both HIV-diagnosed (HIV-D) and HIV-nondiagnosed (HIV-N) MSM report a variety of reasons for intentional and unintentional nonuse of condoms. Elucidating and comparing reasons for continued engagement in condomless anal sex specific to both HIV-D and HIV-N MSM likely is important to identifying effective prevention. METHODS: This study employed meta-analytic methods to evaluate and compare correlates to condomless anal sex in both HIV-D and HIV-N M

Intervenable factors associated with suicide risk in transgender persons: a respondent driven sampling study in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Across Europe, Canada, and the United States, 22-43 % of transgender (trans) people report a history of suicide attempts. We aimed to identify intervenable factors (related to social inclusion, transphobia, or sex/gender transition) associated with reduced risk of past-year suicide ideation or attempt, and to quantify the potential population health impact. METHODS: The Trans PULSE respondent-driven sampling (RDS) survey collected data from trans people age 16+ in Ontario, Canada, including 380 who reported on suicide outcomes. Bridging the gaps: An early integrated support collaborative for at risk mothers in rural Maine.

BACKGROUND: The antecedents that contribute to health disparities in maternal child health populations begin before birth and extend into the early prenatal and gestational growth periods. Mothers and infants living in rural poverty in particular are at considerable risk for problems associated with reproductive health, including pregnancy complications and premature births. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this manuscript is thus two-fold, to describe the epidemiologic makeup of the community and the intervention model of the Community Caring Collaborative. METHODS: Innovative models of early-integrat

Visual function affects prosocial behaviors in older adults.

Eye-related pathological conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration commonly lead to decreased peripheral/central field, decreased visual acuity, and increased functional disability. We sought to answer if relationships exist between measures of visual function and reported prosocial behaviors in an older adult population with eye-related diagnoses. The sample consisted of adults, aged ≥ 60 years old, at an academic hospital's eye institute. Vision ranged from normal to severe impairment. Medical charts determined the visual acuities, ocular disease
