OBJECTIVE: To know the consumption of alcohol in Toledo schoolchildren, to find out the reasons which cause them to drink and the alternatives proposed.
DESIGN: Descriptive, transverse study.
LOCATION: 2 zones in the Toledo health area.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) displays an important phenotypic variability and is a disease influenced by many factors.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: We included 88 patients with HH. Main clinical and laboratory data were analyzed, and the influence of 6 variables on intensity of iron overload was evaluated.

INTRODUCTION: Flu vaccination (FV) in elderly patients at risk is linked to a 50%-60% reduction in hospital admissions and up to an 80% drop in deaths from complications arising from the illness. BACKGROUND: Mastocytosis is a term used for a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by an abnormal proliferation and accumulation of mast cells (MCs) in one or multiple tissues including skin, bone marrow, liver, spleen, and lymph nodes, among others.
METHODS: In recent years, multiparameter flow cytometric studies have shown that pathologic MCs from patients with mastocytosis display unique aberrant immunophenotypic characteristics as compared with normal MCs.

Babesia bennetti sp. nov. is described as a new species of piroplasm parasitizing the yellow-legged gull Larus cachinnans. This is the first report of Babesia for this family of birds. Double infections in the erythrocytes were common. The udder cow forms described in Babesia peircei also were found in this species. The typical "X" forms are rarely seen, with merozoites commonly found in pairs as tetrads.

OBJECTIVE: To report the clinico-epidemiological characteristics of 16 patients with the diagnosis of tularemia.
METHOD: Retrospective review of clinical records of patients admitted to the hospital or examined at health centers in Vizcaya, with clinical course and epidemiology consistent with tularemia, from January to March 1998.

Between 1982 and 1989, 560 Salmonella enterica strains belonging to 63 serovars, were isolated from Zaragoza urban sewage. During the same period of time there were 45 different serovars isolated from faeces of patients from a hospital (in the same city). Only a reduced number of serovars comprised the majority of the human and environmental isolates. An approximately rectilinear relationship is shown between the isolated strains number and the number of different serovars, in non human Salmonella strains.
