OBJECTIVE: To examine the functioning profile of people with neurological disorders who access rehabilitation services through ClinFIT Generic-30.
METHODS: The functioning profile of people with neurological disorders accessing rehabilitation services was examined using the ClinFIT Generic-30, and the results compared with existing core set (neurological health conditions acute and post-acute,stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Traumatic Brain Injury,Spinal Cord Injury).
RESULTS: Data for 364 people were analysed. The 10 most commonly impaired ICF categories included 3 for Body Functions (exercise t

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most commonly found disorder among the prison population; however, research has been slow to study it as a potential cause of crime. This review examines the neurophysiological changes in the organism associated with PTSD and connects them to crime and antisocial behaviour. Patients with PTSD suffer from a hyperactive sympathetic nervous system (SNS), an overactive amygdala that results in a hypoactive hypothalamic‒pituitary‒adrenal (HPA) axis, and a reduced hippocampal volume. All these features have been separately associated with aggressivity and

Cardiovascular events and emotional disorders share a common epidemiology, thus suggesting fundamental pathways linking these different diseases. Growing evidence in the literature highlights the influence of psychological determinants in somatic diseases. A patient's socio-economic aspects, personality traits, health behavior and even biological pathways may contribute to the course of cardiovascular disease. Cardiac events often occur suddenly and the episode can be traumatic for people not prepared for such an event. In this review of the literature, the authors tackle the question of psych

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating neuropsychiatric condition marked by cognitive deficits and neurobiological disturbances, including oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, cholinergic dysfunction, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation, and apoptosis. This study investigated the protective effects of silymarin against single prolonged stress (SPS)-induced PTSD-like changes in mice. Mice were exposed to a triple stress model consisting of restraint stress, forced swim test and brief ether-induced loss of consciousness, and left singly for 7 days of isolatio

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is prevalent among combat veterans and is associated with intimate relationship difficulties. Few studies have examined the prospective longitudinal course of associations between PTSD and relationship difficulties and whether there are gender differences. In a sample comprised of 202 male and female post 9/11 veterans, this study examined gender differences in the association between PTSD symptoms measured 4 times over the course of 1 year and romantic relationship role impairment measured at the beginning and end of that year, accounting for the associati

Among traumatized Cambodian refugees, this article investigates worry (e.g., the types of current life concerns) and how worry worsens posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To explore how worry worsens PTSD, we examine a path model of worry to see whether certain key variables (e.g., worry-induced somatic arousal and worry-induced trauma recall) mediate the relationship between worry and PTSD. Survey data were collected from March 2010 until May 2010 in a convenience sample of 201 adult Cambodian refugees attending a psychiatric clinic in Massachusetts, USA. We found that worry was common in t

There is growing acknowledgment that research in the postconflict field needs to include a focus on social conditions. The authors applied structural equation modeling to epidemiologic data obtained from postconflict Timor-Leste, to examine for links involving potentially traumatic events and sociodemographic factors (age, gender, educational levels, and unemployment) with psychological symptoms and functioning. Exposure to trauma and lack of education emerged as most relevant with psychological distress impacting on education in the urban area. Age and gender exerted influences at different p

This case report describes a 31-year-old male patient with psychosis presumably related to methamphetamine-associated psychosis (MAP). Our patient was experiencing persistent symptoms of visual, tactile, and auditory hallucinations after cessation of methamphetamine. He has a medical history of a substance use disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, nicotine dependence and major depressive disorder. Previously, he received a wide range of antipsychotic drug treatment regimens at other psychiatric facilities, all with some degree of effect, but never

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious psychiatric disorder that affects multiple symptomatic domains and is associated with an increased risk of suicidality. Several empirically supported treatments for BPD have been developed in recent years for adults with BPD. More recent work has focused on tailoring or applying (or both) these existing treatments to specific patient populations, including patients with certain types of comorbidity (for example, BPD and post-traumatic stress disorder or antisocial personality disorder) and younger patients. Other work has involved developing t

Esophageal atresia (EA) occurs in one out of 2500 to 4500 live births. As the vast majority of infants are now surviving neonatal corrective surgery, the focus has shifted from mortality to morbidity associated with EA. However, little is known about its psychological morbidity. This paper synthesizes research and clinical evidence to highlight the psychological sequelae of EA, including its impact on parents' psychological functioning and its effects on child development from infancy to adulthood. Whether it is discovered at birth or prenatally, EA is a psychologically traumatic event, and pa

Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) is a rare vitamin B deficiency classically associated with alcoholism. MBD damages the corpus callosum and presents with nonspecific neurological symptoms. Radiological imaging is critical for diagnosing MBD and commencing subsequent treatment, which often consists of vitamin B supplementation. We present a case of MBD in a 56-year-old male with alcohol use disorder, epilepsy, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and cardiovascular risk factors. The patient presented with general neurological symptoms, and there were several potential diagnoses to co

Interventions for youth exposed to family violence recently have incorporated a trauma focus with the objective of reducing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms along with alleviating other wide-ranging childhood disorders. This paper describes generally agreed-upon treatment components for youth exposed to violence in the home, including re-exposure interventions, education about violence and cognitive restructuring, processing of emotional cues, social problem-solving skills, and parenting interventions. Empirically evaluated treatment programs for different developmental stages (pr

Emotional dysregulation (ED) has recently been conceptualized as a transnosographic entity in major mental disorders, and increasing evidence has suggested association between ED and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), though the nature of this association is unclear. The aim of the present review was to examine the possible interplay between ED and trauma exposure in the literature, as well as a possible role for the comorbidity of PTSD or PTSS in adolescents and young adults. In particular, we explored whether ED may represent a risk factor for PTSD or, conversely, a consequence of trauma

OBJECTIVE: In this study we examined demographic, social, and clinical variables related to sexual abuse histories in a sample of severely mentally ill youth.
METHOD: Data were collected via a retrospective chart review of all patients treated over a 5-year period (1987-1992) at a tertiary care public sector psychiatric hospital. The sample was divided into four groups: no history of sexual abuse (n = 226); isolated events (n = 62); intermittent abuse (n = 61); and chronic (n = 150).
RESULTS: Youth with sexual abuse histories were more often female, had higher rates of social chaos and assoc

Memory consolidation is the process by which newly acquired experiences are stabilized into long-term memory, involving coordinated cellular and network-level activity across brain regions such as the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Dysregulation of this process has been implicated in psychiatric disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is characterized by the over-consolidation of traumatic memories. LIM kinase 1 (LIMK1), a key regulator of synaptic plasticity, is believed to play an important role in memory consolidation across hippocampal-cortical circuits. In thi

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is caused by exposure to a traumatic or stressful event. Symptoms related to this disorder include persistent re-experiencing of memories and fear of generalization. Current pharmacological treatments for PTSD are insufficient, with fewer than 30% of patients reporting symptom remission. This study aims to determine the efficacy of acute (R,S)-ketamine and chronic fluoxetine (FLX) in reducing fear memory and fear generalization. In rodents, fear conditioning (FC) is commonly used in the literature to induce behaviors related to symptoms of PTSD, and the op

INTRODUCTION: Social cognition is frequently impaired in traumatic brain injury (TBI). The lack of naturalistic and integrated assessments of social cognition has been highlighted. We investigated REALSoCog's feasibility, a new non-immersive virtual reality serious game, in severe TBI. Additionally, we explored the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
METHODS: Ten severe TBI patients completed the REALSoCog task and the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. They were compared with 27 matched healthy controls.
RESULTS: Reduced emotional empathy and difficulties in affective theory of mind wer

INTRODUCTION: The definition of psychological trauma has been rephrased with the DSM-5. From now on, witnessing someone else's traumatic event is also accepted as a traumatic life event. Therefore, the psychiatric examination of forensic cases gains importance for not overlooking a psychiatric trauma. This research aims to discuss the psychiatric examinations of military personnel who had a traumatic life event and to reveal psychiatric states of soldiers after trauma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The forensic reports prepared at Gulhane Military Medical Academy (GMMA), Forensic Medicine polyclinic

BACKGROUND: Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a common and disabling neuropsychiatric condition in which women comprise approximately 75% of cases. This paper examines whether the gender imbalance seen in FND is unique among neurological and psychiatric conditions and explores the biological, psychological, and social contributors to this disparity.
METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Gender ratios were compared across depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, Parkinson's disease, and multip

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are nonsteroid nuclear receptors and transcription factors that regulate several neuroinflammatory and metabolic processes, recently involved in several neuropsychiatric conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. PPARs are ligand-activated receptors that, following stimulation, induce neuroprotective effects by decreasing neuroinflammatory processes through inhibition of the nuclear factor kap
