Risk tools for predicting long-term sequelae based on symptom profiles after known and undetected SARS-CoV-2 infections in the population.

The aim was to determine the profile of long-term symptoms after known and undetected SARS-CoV-2 infections and to generate tools for risk and diagnostic assessment of Post-COVID syndrome (PCS). In the population-based Gutenberg COVID-19 Study (N = 10,250), sequential, systematic screening for SARS-CoV-2 was performed in 2020/2021. Individuals received a standardized interview on newly occurred or worsened symptoms since the infection or the pandemic. Robust Poisson regression models were fit to compare the frequency of symptoms between groups. Two scores were developed using machine learning

Sensory and volatile compound profiles in tempeh-like products from faba bean and oats.

Faba beans (Vicia faba L.) and whole-grain oats (Avena sativa L.) offer a high protein content, are a source of dietary fibre and they can be sustainably produced in the Nordic countries, yet face sensory limitations that restrict their wider use in food. This study aimed to overcome these sensory limitations by soaking the faba bean and whole-grain oats with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, followed by solid-state fermentation with Rhizopus microsporus to produce tempeh-like products. Volatile organic compounds in uncooked and cooked tempeh were analysed using Headspace Solid-Phase Micro-Extrac

Rejection of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol by polyamide membranes in drinking water treatment: Performance-energy efficiency evaluation and practical implications.

Polyamide nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes hold a great promise to address the challenge of taste and odor (T&O) compounds such as geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) in drinking water treatment. These NF/RO membranes have varied physicochemical properties that can lead to discrete separation performance accompanied by different specific energy consumption (SEC). Nevertheless, the effects of membrane properties on the trade-off between rejection of T&O compounds and SEC remain unclear. Herein, we characterized the properties of four commercial NF/RO membranes (NF

Ketone supplementation acutely lowers androgen and glucose levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder linked to insulin resistance and elevated androgens. While ketogenic diets reduce androgen and glucose levels in women with PCOS, the direct role of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether BHB supplementation acutely lowers circulating androgen and glucose levels in women with PCOS. METHODS: A randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial was conducted involving 20 women diagnosed with PCOS. Participants underwent fasting blood sampling on 2 occasions. They were randomly assigne

Analog Rice Based on Sago and Corn with the Addition of Moringa Leaf (Moringa oleifera L.) Powder as a Nutritional Vehicle for Breastfeeding Women.

Breastfeeding women require specific nutrition to support the quality and secretion of breast milk, which can be achieved through the development of analog rice. Several potential alternatives to develop analog rice, including sago and corn flour, can be developed with the addition of moringa leaf powder due to its high nutritional composition and bioactive compounds, particularly high protein, iron, phytosterols, and flavonoids, which are suitable for breastfeeding women. However, as a new product, besides considering its nutritional value, developing the preferred and acceptable formulation

Multi-ancestry Genome-Wide Association Study of Early Childhood Caries.

Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most common non-communicable childhood disease. It is an important health problem with known environmental and social/behavioral influences that lacks evidence for specific associated genetic risk loci. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a genome-wide association study of ECC in a multi-ancestry population of U.S. preschool-age children (n=6,103) participating in a community-based epidemiologic study of early childhood oral health. Calibrated examiners used ICDAS criteria to measure ECC with the primary trait using the dmfs index with decay classifi
