The Interplay between Gambling Activity Groups, Problem Gambling Symptoms, and Mental Wellbeing from a Public Health Perspective.

The existing literature predominantly focuses on clinical conditions related to gambling, with evidence suggesting the co-occurrence of gambling disorders, major depressive disorders, and personality disorders. This study aimed to broaden our understanding beyond clinical conditions by investigating the impact of different gambling activity groups on mental wellbeing. These activity groups were identified using latent class analysis, which enabled a person-centered approach to examine the types and the number of gambling activities as well as expenditure levels, as a single latent variable. Covert or connected: Motivations for online and interpersonal reassurance-seeking in OCD.

Interpersonal reassurance-seeking is a common anxiety-management strategy used by individuals with a range of disorders, but can be particularly repetitive and exacting among individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although this strategy yields short-term relief, it also comes at a cost, creating frustration and straining relationships. Non-interpersonal sources of reassurance-such as the internet-have been less thoroughly studied, but may offer unique advantages. In this mixed-methods study, we explored the differentiating benefits and drawbacks of interpersonal and online reass

Artificial intelligence-based prescription of personalized scalp cosmetics improved the scalp condition: efficacy results from 100 participants.

Background: Scalp-related symptoms such as dandruff and itching are common with diverse underlying etiologies. We previously proposed a novel classification and scoring system for scalp conditions, called the scalp photographic index (SPI); it grades five scalp features using trichoscopic images with good reliability. However, it requires trained evaluators.Aim: To develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for assessment of scalp conditions and to assess the feasibility of AI-based recommendations on personalized scalp cosmetics. Methods: Using EfficientNet, convolutional neural network (

Personalized inference for neurostimulation with meta-learning: a case study of vagus nerve stimulation.

Objective. Neurostimulation is emerging as treatment for several diseases of the brain and peripheral organs. Due to variability arising from placement of stimulation devices, underlying neuroanatomy and physiological responses to stimulation, it is essential that neurostimulation protocols are personalized to maximize efficacy and safety. Building such personalized protocols would benefit from accumulated information in increasingly large datasets of other individuals' responses.Approach. To address that need, we propose a meta-learning family of algorithms to conduct few-shot optimization of

Use of systemic hormonal contraception and risk of attempted suicide: a nested case-control study.

Evidence regarding the role of hormonal contraception (HC) as a risk factor for attempted suicide is inconclusive. Thus, this study aimed to assess the associations of use of different types of systemic HC with the risk of attempted suicide in women aged 15-49 years. Data on a population-based cohort (n = 587,823) of HC users and non-users in 2017 was derived from national registers in Finland. In a nested case-control design we examined the risk of attempted suicide in relation to current HC use (past six months) via multivariable conditional logistic regression models. During the follow-up (

Precision nanomedicine to treat non-small cell lung cancer.

Lung cancer is a major cause of death worldwide, being often detected at a later stage due to the non-appearance of early symptoms. Therefore, specificity of the treatment is of utmost importance for its effective treatment. Precision medicine is a personalized therapy based on the genomics of the patient to design a suitable drug approach. Genetic mutations render the tumor resistant to specific mutations and the therapy is in vain even though correct medications are prescribed. Therefore, Precision medicine needs to be explored for the treatment of Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Nanopar

Prenatal Substance Exposure and Infant Discharge Placement: Results From the ACT NOW Study.

It is critical that researchers gather evidence of factors that identify infants at risk of out-of-home placement based on types of substance exposures and demographic characteristics. This study applied a validated medical record data extraction tool on data derived from a multi-site (N = 30) pediatric clinical trials network (ISPCTN) study of Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal (ACT NOW study). Participants included 1808 birthing parent-infant dyads with documented NOWS scoring or prenatal opioid exposure. Non-Hispanic White pregnant persons comprised the largest proportion of the sample (69.8%), fol

Behaviours and psychological symptoms of childhood dementia: two cases of psychosocial interventions.

Childhood dementias are a group of rare, fatal neurodegenerative disorders, characterised by global cognitive decline, loss of previously acquired developmental skills and behaviours and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Batten disease, or neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, and Sanfilippo syndrome, or mucopolysaccharidosis type III, are two of the more common forms of childhood dementia disorders worldwide. While psychosocial interventions are the best available therapeutic approach for BPSD management in adult-onset dementia, there is very limited literature or clinical experience in th

BACKGROUND: A large increase in the rate of hospitalizations for adolescents and children with anorexia nervosa (AN) was observed during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. It is still not clear whether this was a temporary effect or whether the increased admission rates persist. METHODS: Data were retrieved from the largest health insurance in Germany comprising 2.5 million children between 9 and 19 y. All patients of this age group with a discharge diagnosis of typical (AN) and atypical AN (AAN) according to the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10), wer

Prevalence of Impacted Canines among Dental Patients in the Industrial Workers of Hyderabad - A Radiographic Study.

BACKGROUND: Impacted teeth have a low prevalence but exhibit a very uneven distribution. Among dental visits, impaction is one of the most common issues encountered. The causes of impaction can can vary from person to person, including factors such as a lack of calcium, retained deciduous tooth, or the presence of supernumerary teeth that interfere with the normal eruption pattern. The presence of impacted teeth can hinder the progress of orthodontic treatment. Therefore, understanding the prevalence of impacted teeth is crucial for effective treatment planning. This study aims to examine the

How does the public understand the causes of mental disorders? An analysis of Irish news media before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Public perceptions of the determinants of mental illness have important implications for attitudes and stigma, but minimal previous research has explored how causal attributions are spontaneously invoked in everyday public discourse. This study investigated how causal explanations for mental illness are disseminated in popular Irish news media, in the two years before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Keyword searches of a news media database identified 1,892 articles published between March 2018 to March 2022 that mentioned one of six categories of mental disorders: anxiety disord

Infective endocarditis after transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation in patients with congenital heart disease: Distinctive features.

The introduction of transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation (TPVI) has greatly benefited the management of right ventricular outflow tract dysfunction. Infective endocarditis (IE) is a feared complication of TPVI that affects valve durability and patient outcomes. Current recommendations provide only limited guidance on the management of IE after TPVI (TPVI-IE). This article, by a group of experts in congenital heart disease in children and adults, interventional cardiology, infectious diseases including IE, and microbiology, provides a comprehensive review of the current evidence on TPVI-I

Breast Cancer Screening for Women at Higher-Than-Average Risk: Updated Recommendations From the ACR.

Early detection decreases breast cancer death. The ACR recommends annual screening beginning at age 40 for women of average risk and earlier and/or more intensive screening for women at higher-than-average risk. For most women at higher-than-average risk, the supplemental screening method of choice is breast MRI. Women with genetics-based increased risk, those with a calculated lifetime risk of 20% or more, and those exposed to chest radiation at young ages are recommended to undergo MRI surveillance starting at ages 25 to 30 and annual mammography (with a variable starting age between 25 and
