Mortality studies of aluminum reduction plant workers: potroom and carbon department.

The purpose of this study was to investigate mortality patterns of aluminum reduction plant workers. A cohort was formed of 21,829 workers with five or more years employment in 14 reduction plants. Progress of the study was reported quarterly to a Tripartite Committee consisting of representatives from labor, management and government. Although the results of other studies relative to an excess of lung cancer in aluminum workers were not confirmed, there were indications of a higher than expected mortality in pancreatic cancer, lymphohematopoietic cancers, genitourinary cancer, nonmalignant re

YBX1 Enhances the Stability of TM4SF1 in an m5C-Dependent Manner to Promote Bladder Cancer Proliferation and Glycolysis.

INTRODUCTION: Y-box binding protein 1 (YBX1), an RNA-binding protein capable of recognizing the 5-methylcytosine (m5C), plays a role in the development and progression of various cancers. In this study, we aim to investigate the functional mechanism of YBX1-mediated m5C modification in Bladder Cancer (BCa). METHODS: The impact of YBX1 on glycolysis and biological functions in BCa cells was evaluated through a set of in vitro experiments. The underlying mechanisms involving YBX1, Transmembrane 4 L six family 1 (TM4SF1), and β-catenin/C-myc in BCa and their relationship were investigated using

Reviewing inclusivity of the UK bladder and head and neck oncology trial portfolio through eligibility criteria: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In clinical trials, eligibility criteria define a population who may benefit from the intervention without incurring undue safety risks. Despite their value, overly stringent eligibility criteria may pose barriers to inclusive recruitment. They may disproportionately exclude groups of people more likely to be diagnosed at later cancer stages, or have specific co-morbidities which can be associated with socio-demographic or ethnic background. The National Institute for Health and Care Research Innovations in Clinical Trial Design and Delivery for the Under-served (NIHR-INCLUDE) guid

Impact of a multidisciplinary approach on outcomes in urothelial carcinoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Urothelial carcinoma demonstrates high prevalence and is characterized by significant clinical heterogeneity. As treatment options expand, therapeutic decisions become more complex, giving multidisciplinary teams (MDT) a crucial role. This review summarizes current evidence on the impact of a multidisciplinary approach on outcomes in urothelial carcinoma. RECENT FINDINGS: Most urothelial carcinoma data derive from bladder cancer studies, where MDT have a substantial impact on diagnostic accuracy, improved staging quality and treatment recommendations. MDT often implement tr

Evaluation of large language models for VI-RADS reports: a comparative analysis of zero-shot and few-shot prompting.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate preoperative staging is vital in bladder cancer management, particularly for assessing muscle invasion. Multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) combined with the Vesical Imaging–Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) offers a non-invasive and standardized approach for tumor stratification. However, inter-observer variability among radiologists remains a significant limitation. This study investigates the performance of three large language models (LLMs)—ChatGPT (OpenAI; GPT-5.2), Gemini (Google; Gemini 2.0), and Copilot (Microsoft; Copilot based on GPT-5 architecture)—in classifying bl

Loss of YTHDC1 m6A reading function promotes invasiveness in urothelial carcinoma of the bladder.

Bladder cancer poses significant clinical challenges due to its high metastatic potential and poor prognosis, especially when it progresses to muscle-invasive stages. Here, we show that the m6A reader YTHDC1 is downregulated in muscle-invasive bladder cancer and is negatively correlated with the expression of epithelial‒mesenchymal transition genes. The functional inhibition or depletion of YTHDC1 increased the migration and invasion of urothelial cells. Integrative analysis of multimodal sequencing datasets provided detailed insights into the molecular mechanisms mediating YTHDC1-dependent ph

Correlation between thyroid hormone levels and the incidence and staging of bladder cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Given the role of thyroid hormones (THs) in metabolism, growth and development, their involvement in carcinogenesis and cancer progression in the context of bladder cancer (BC) warrants further investigation. This study aimed to investigate the associations between TH levels and the incidence and stage of BC. METHODS: A cohort of 46 diagnosed BC patients with no history of thyroid disease, and 47 healthy controls were analysed. BC patients were classified into NMIBC and MIBC according to the 2017 TNM staging system (AJCC, 8th edition). Thyroid hormones and antibodies were measured.

Urachal adenocarcinoma presenting as pseudomyxoma peritonei: an unusual bladder tumour.

A man in his 50s presented to the emergency department with a complaint of progressively increasing swelling in the lower abdomen. Investigations revealed a large pelvic mass for which a fine needle aspiration cytology was done, which was suggestive of adenocarcinoma. He was then referred to a urologist in view of suspected urachal adenocarcinoma. Following preoperative evaluation, he was taken up for tumour excision with partial cystectomy and extended pelvic lymph node dissection. Intraoperatively, there was a growth involving the dome of the bladder with mucinous ascites and multiple omenta

Diagnostic value of serum DR-70 levels, a new fibrin-related biomarker, in bladder cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Bladder cancer has high morbidity and mortality rates when it is diagnosed at an advanced stage. The aim of our study is to determine the effect of the DR-70 protein in the diagnosis of bladder cancer and to evaluate its relationship with the grade of the disease. METHODS: Serum samples from 60 patients with bladder cancer and 24 control patients with macroscopic hematuria of benign etiology were included in the study. DR-70 levels were compared between the bladder cancer group and the control group. Additionally, a comparison was made between patients with non-muscle invasive bla

Treatment strategies for cisplatin-ineligible metastatic bladder cancer: Emerging therapies and future perspectives.

Recently, the combination of enfortumab vedotin and pembrolizumab has been recommended as the preferred first-line therapy for metastatic or locally advanced urothelial carcinoma owing to its substantial survival benefits. However, its high-cost limits accessibility, leading to many patients receiving cisplatin-based chemotherapy as a more practical alternative. Therefore, cisplatin-based combination chemotherapy remains a widely used first-line treatment for metastatic bladder cancer (MBC). Nonetheless, nearly half of the patients are ineligible for cisplatin owing to factors such as renal im

Metastasis of Urothelial Carcinoma to the Wrist: A Case Report of an Overlooked Finding on Whole-body 99m Tc-MDP Scan.

A 65-year-old man presented with painless hematuria and a bladder mass, diagnosed as high-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma following transurethral resection. Considering negative metastasis workup, he was scheduled for radical cystectomy. During follow-up, he reported chronic wrist pain. A whole-body 99m Tc-Methylene diphosphonate (MDP) scan showed focal uptake in the wrist, misinterpreted as arthritis and overlooked as inconsequential. Three months later, x-ray imaging revealed a lytic wrist lesion, later confirmed as metastatic carcinoma through biopsy. Immunohistochemical analysis suppo

Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the follow-up of non-muscle-invasive bladder tumors after intravesical instillations: a promising tool.

PURPOSE: The standard follow-up for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer is based on cystoscopy. Unfortunately, post-instillation inflammatory changes can make the interpretation of this exam difficult, with lower specificity. This study aimed to evaluate the interest of bladder MRI in the follow-up of patients following intravesical instillation. METHODS: Data from patients who underwent cystoscopy and bladder MRI in a post-intravesical instillation setting between February 2020 and March 2023 were retrospectively collected. Primary endpoint was to evaluate and compare the diagnostic performan

Prognostic Significance of Immune Cell Infiltration in Muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer Treated with Definitive Chemoradiation: A Secondary Analysis of RTOG 0524 and RTOG 0712.

Chemoradiation therapy (CRT) is a treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). Using a novel transcriptomic profiling panel, we validated prognostic immune biomarkers to CRT using 70 pretreatment tumor samples from prospective trials of MIBC (NRG/RTOG 0524 and 0712). Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated via the Kaplan-Meier method and stratified by genes correlated with immune cell activation. Cox proportional-hazards models were used to assess group differences. Clustering of gene expression profiles revealed that the cluster with high immune cell conte
