A behaviour risk factor survey in Jamaica.

A population based probability sample of 958 persons (454 males and 504 females) aged 15 to 49 years was surveyed in Jamaica in late 1993 for lifestyle and behaviour risk factors. Demographic characteristics of the sample were comparable to the general population, 60% of persons visited a private doctor the last time that they were ill. Based on self-reporting, 18% of the women and 8% of the men were hypertensive and 4.8% of the women and 3.3% of the men were diabetic. 26% of the men and 8% of the women had never had their blood pressure taken. 40% of the women had never had a Papanicolaou sme

Prevalence, classifications and factors associated with sexual dysfunction among adult cancer patients on chemotherapy at the Uganda Cancer Institute, Mbarara.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction is a social challenge that devastates many people, including cancer patients. However, among the numerous reported side effects of chemotherapy sexual dysfunction is the least studied and reported. The chemotherapeutics used among cancer patients are potential risk factors for the development of sexual dysfunction, and such an understanding of these risk factors can lead to numerous interventions to bypass their effects on sexual activity. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence, classification and factors associated with sexual dysfunc

Immunocytochemical detection of raf kinase inhibitor protein and human papillomavirus profiling of normal and abnormal cervical ThinPrep samples.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the potential value of Raf kinase inhibitor protein (RKIP) as a marker of normal squamous cells in ThinPrep slides. RKIP was evaluated for its ability to distinguish between normal and abnormal cervical samples in the context of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 316 ThinPrep samples were taken from women with normal and abnormal cervices. ThinPrep slides were Papanicolaou stained and reported. Residual samples were used for RKIP immunostaining and HPV PCR-based sequencing. RESULTS: RKIP expression was seen in both nuclei and c

Acute pancreatitis with hypercalcemia caused by primary hyperparathyroidism associated with paraneoplastic syndrome: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Although acute pancreatitis associated with hyperparathyroidism has occasionally been reported, acute pancreatitis with metabolic encephalopathy caused by hyperparathyroidism combined with paraneoplastic syndrome is an extremely rare entity and poorly described in the literature. CASE SUMMARY: We present a case of a 56-year-old female with upper abdominal discomfort and intermittent nausea and vomiting for 1 wk, without apparent abdominal pain or bloating, no jaundice and decreased blood pressure at the outset. The patient was ultimately diagnosed with moderately severe acute panc

Exploring the Cervical Cancer Screening Experiences of Black Lesbian, Bisexual, and Queer Women: The Role of Patient-Provider Communication.

Few studies have focused on the health and health care of U.S. black lesbian, bisexual, and queer (LBQ) women. To understand the facilitators of and barriers to cervical cancer screening in this population, focus group discussions were conducted in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts between November and December 2012. Using purposive sampling methods, the authors enrolled 18 black LBQ women who participated in one of four focus groups. Using thematic analysis, patient-provider communication was identified, which consisted of four sub-themes--health care provider communication style and demean

Prognostic impact of human papilloma virus (HPV) genotyping and HPV-16 subtyping in vaginal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study are to investigate the human papilloma virus (HPV) distribution in vaginal cancer and to evaluate HPV-genotype as well as HPV16-variant impact on prognosis. METHODS: Sixty-nine patients diagnosed with primary vaginal carcinoma (1975-2002) were included in the study. Detection of twelve high-risk HPV (hr HPV) and two low-risk HPV (lr HPV) was performed with realtime-PCR. Samples positive for HPV-16 were analyzed for variants in the E6-gene with PCR and pyrosequencing. RESULTS: 53.6% (37/69) of the tumors were found to be HPV-positive, mostly for HPV-16

Barriers to cervical cancer screening in women attending the Family Medical Program in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro.

BACKGROUND: The Family Medical Program is a health care system in the Rio de Janeiro state. Women's health services offered by the Family Medical Program include preventive exams and screening, family planning, and prenatal follow-up. Although cervical cancer screening is offered, barriers to care still hinder the full success of the program, and we are attempting to identify these barriers. METHODS: We undertook a cross-sectional and prospective study involving 351 women who were referred to the Family Medical Program between March 2009 and November 2010. Demographic data were obtained throu

Effect of Pap smear collection and carrageenan on cervicovaginal human papillomavirus-16 infection in a rhesus macaque model.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of the genital mucosa is thought to require trauma to the cervicovaginal epithelium. Therefore, we determined whether a cytology specimen collection procedure (Pap smear), which disrupts the epithelium by design, renders the cervix more susceptible to HPV infection in a primate model. METHODS: In a series of female rhesus macaques, a speculum examination was performed with (n = 8) or without (n = 4) a cytology specimen collection procedure as it is commonly practiced in a gynecology clinic. An internal digital examination was performed after sp

Human papillomavirus detection by the hybrid capture II assay: a reliable test to select women with normal cervical smears at risk for developing cervical lesions.

The reliability of the Hybrid Capture II (HC-II; Digene, Silver Spring, MD, U.S.A.) assay was tested in detecting 18 human Papillomavirus (HPV) types for the screening of cervical lesions. Cytology, HPV testing, colposcopy, and biopsy were used to monitor 204 women with normal smears at the first entry. The median follow-up was 15 months (range, 4-27 months). The primary endpoint was clinical progression defined as the presence of a cervical intraepithelial lesion at the biopsy. In the patient population of 204 HPV-infected women, 81 (39.7%) had a persistent HPV infection at two or three exami

Implementation of HPV-based Cervical Cancer Screening Combined with Self-sampling Using a Midwifery Network Across Rural Greece: The GRECOSELF Study.

Self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is an alternative to physician sampling particularly for cervical cancer screening nonattenders. The GRECOSELF study is a nationwide observational cross-sectional study aiming to suggest a way to implement HPV-DNA testing in conjunction with self-sampling for cervical cancer screening in Greece, utilizing a midwifery network. Women residing in remote areas of Greece were approached by midwives, of a nationwide network, and were provided with a self-collection kit (dry swab) for cervicovaginal sampling and asked to answer a questionnaire abou

Strategies for Increasing Cervical Cancer Screening Amongst First Nations Communities in Northwest Ontario, Canada.

The high burden of cervical cancer in Indigenous populations worldwide is due to underscreening and inadequate follow-up. Using qualitative, participatory action research, we interviewed health care staff to identify ways to increase screening recruitment in First Nations communities in Northwest Ontario, Canada. Our findings suggest the value of a multilevel social-ecological model to promote behavioral changes at the community, health care service and stakeholder, and decision-maker level. Participants emphasized the central role of First Nations women as nurturers of life and for the well-b

[Diseases caused by human papilloma viruses].

Human papilloma viruses are responsible for a large number of benign and malignant lesions of the skin. HPV 6 and 11 cause up to 90 % of condylomata. Almost each cervical cancer is associated with HPV. HPV 16 und 18 induce up to 70 % of cervical neoplasias. The vaccination against HPV is internationally implemented and should be applied to young girls aged 12 to 17 according to STIKO criteria. The vaccination may reduce the rate of cervical cancer by 70 % and the rate of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia by 50 %. Many studies demonstrated the efficacy and safetyness of both vaccines. Personal influencing factors associated with pap smear testing and cervical cancer.

PURPOSE: Puerto Ricans have higher lifetime and current asthma prevalence than other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. A great many Hispanics use ethnomedical therapies for asthma. This study elicited participant knowledge of ethnomedical therapies, developed a typology of the therapies, and considered whether some types are used or deemed efficacious based, in part, on information source. METHODS: Eligible participants were randomly selected from the medical records of an inner-city primary care clinic serving a predominantly Hispanic community in Buffalo, New York. Thirty adult

Medicolegal affairs. International Academy of Cytology Task Force summary. Diagnostic Cytology Towards the 21st Century: An International Expert Conference and Tutorial.

ISSUES: Increasing litigation over alleged false negative cervical cytologic (CC) smears threatens the viability of this test for cervical cancer detection. The problem appears to be largely American but is beginning to appear in some other countries. In the vast majority of cases there is either a settlement or jury verdict for the plaintiff based largely on the testimony of expert witnesses. Cases are judged on an individual basis without significant consideration of the general performance of the CC smear in laboratories operating in compliance with a wide array of laboratory regulations an

Burden and genotype distribution of high-risk Human Papillomavirus infection and cervical cytology abnormalities at selected obstetrics and gynecology clinics of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus is recognized as a major cause of cervical cancer. It is estimated that annually, 7,095 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 4,732 die from the disease in Ethiopia. Understanding that the screening practice is very poor and the coverage is very limited, this disease burden is one of the major public health agendas in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the burden and genotype distribution of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR HPV) infection and cervical cytology abnormalities at selected obstetrics and gynecology clinics of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Obesity disparities in preventive care: findings from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, 2005-2007.

Obesity and its consequences are a major health concern. There are conflicting reports regarding utilization of preventive health-care services among obese patients. Our objective was to determine whether obese patients receive the same preventive care as normal weight patients. Weighted patient clinic visit data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) were analyzed for all adult patient visits with height/weight data (N = 866,415,856) from 2005 to 2007. Preventive care practice patterns were compared among different weight groups of normal, obese, and morbidly obese. Obese pa
