Objective.Retinal stimulation in blind patients evokes the sensation of discrete points of light called phosphenes, which allows them to perform visually guided tasks, such as orientation, navigation, object recognition, object manipulation and reading. However, the clinical benefit of artificial vision in profoundly blind patients is still tenuous, as several engineering and biophysical obstacles keep it far away from natural perception. The relative preservation of the inner retinal neurons in hereditary degenerative retinal diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa, supports artificial vision

Acute alcohol intoxication and alcohol use disorders are characterized by a wide range of psychological and cerebral impairments, which have been widely explored using neuropsychological and neuroscientific techniques. Eye tracking has recently emerged as an innovative tool to renew this exploration, as eye movements offer complementary information on the processes underlying perceptive, attentional, memory or executive abilities. Building on this, the present systematic and critical literature review provides a comprehensive overview of eye tracking studies exploring cognitive and affective p

There is often a need to more precisely identify the extent of pathology and the fine elements of intracranial anatomic features during the diagnostic process and during many operations in the nose, sinus, orbit, and skull base region. In two case reports, we describe the methods used in the diagnostic workup and surgical therapy in the nose and paranasal sinus region. Besides baseline x-ray, multislice computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, operative field imaging was performed via a rapid prototyping model, virtual endoscopy, and 3-D imaging. Different head tissues were visuali

Recent evidence has revealed an advantage for movements to last target positions in a structured visual display, suggesting a mediating role of allocentric, in addition to egocentric, information in goal-directed reaching. This notion is accommodated by the recently updated perception-action model (Milner and Goodale, 2008), which postulates functional roles of ventral and dorsal neural areas in allocentric coding. In the present study, we used imaging-guided multi-site continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) over regions of the ventral and dorsal processing streams to unravel their function

The visual acuity of the patient with ethambutol optic neuropathy will recover within 3 to 4 months after discontinuing the drug. We studied the extent of the recovery of other visual functions. Thirty-six axial type ethambutol optic neuropathy patients, who visited our neuro-ophthalmology clinic from January, 1990, to December, 1993, were included in this study. Fifteen patients (29 eyes) regained their visual acuity to better than 1.0. The average follow-up period following the recovery is 21.7 months. BACKGROUND: In low-vision patients, traditional measures often fall short of capturing functional vision improvements. The study aims to assess the reliability and validity of a novel functional low-vision outcome assessment, the Multi-luminance Shape Discrimination Test (MLSDT).
METHODS: This is a prospective, observational study in 25 participants with severe vision loss due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP) with visual acuity worse than or equal to LogMAR 1.6, and in 10 normal vision participants. The MLSDT utilizes three differently shaped objects, randomly positioned on pressure sensors, to e

Previous studies on animal models suggested that visual areas involved in motion processing could undergo important cortical reorganizations following retinal damages. This could have major implications for patients suffering from macular degeneration (MD), one leading cause of vision loss. Here, we performed fMRI recordings in a group of maculopathy patients (N = 7, 3 women, including individuals suffering from age-related macular degeneration or from Stargardt's disease) and a control group to characterize the motion processing cortical network in MD patients and determine whether this netwo

How does sensory experience shape the development of the visual brain? To answer this eluding question, we examine brain responses to visual categories in a rare group of cataract-reversal individuals who experienced a short transient period of early blindness. Encoding of low-level visual properties is impaired in the early visual cortex (EVC) of cataract-reversal participants, whereas categorical responses in downstream ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC) are preserved. In controls, degrading visual input to mimic the visual deficits of cataracts produces cascading disruptions extending

Selective attention is a core cognitive function for efficient processing of information. Although it is well known that attention can modulate neural responses in many brain areas, the computational principles underlying attentional modulation remain unclear. Contrary to the prevailing view of a high-dimensional, distributed neural representation, here we show a surprisingly simple, biased neural representation for feature-based attention in a large dataset including five human fMRI studies. We found that when human participants (both sexes) selected one feature from a compound stimulus, voxe

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies suggest that motivational cues such as rewards may be a powerful determinant of attentional selection, both in healthy subjects and in brain-damaged patients suffering from neglect. However, the exact brain mechanisms underlying these effects and their relation to other well-known attentional systems are still poorly known.
METHODS: We designed a visual search paradigm to examine how value-based attentional priority could modulate spatial orienting in patients with pathological biases due to neglect after right hemispheric stroke. Targets were preceded by exogenous v

BACKGROUND: Many newborn babies experience low blood glucose concentrations, a condition referred to as neonatal hypoglycaemia (NH). The effect of NH on visual development in infancy and childhood is of interest because the occipital lobes, which include the primary visual cortex and a number of extrastriate visual areas, may be particularly susceptible to NH-induced injury. In addition, a number of case series have suggested that NH can affect eye and optic nerve development.
OBJECTIVE: To review the existing literature concerning the effect of NH on the visual system.

Amblyopia is a relatively common (incidence 3%) developmental disorder in which there is loss of vision as a consequence of a disruption to normal visual development. Although the deficit is monocular and known to be of cortical origin, the nature of the processing deficit is controversial. Human behavioral studies have identified two main deficits - a loss of contrast sensitivity and perceived spatial distortions. Here we use a multifocal fMRI approach to ascertain, in a group of anisometropic amblyopes, whether these two deficits have a single common cause or whether they are the result of t

Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) are widely used in spatial selective attention. In this process the two kinds of visual simulators, Light Emitting Diode (LED) and Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), are commonly used to evoke SSVEP. In this paper, the differences of SSVEP caused by these two stimulators in the study of spatial selective attention were investigated. Results indicated that LED could stimulate strong SSVEP component on occipital lobe, and the frequency of evoked SSVEP had high precision and wide range as compared to LCD. Moreover a significant difference between noticed

INTRODUCTION: Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a condition that causes visual hallucinations in patients without any mental illnesses. CBS is characterized by the presence of vivid, complex and recurrent visual hallucinations, and do not occur in the setting or as part of delirium or other psychological illnesses. The condition is present in patients who have visual loss due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts and/or other ocular diseases that influence vision.
CASE REPORT: A 81-year-od woman reported to ophthalmologist complaining of visual hallucinations that consisted of w

PURPOSE: Develop a paradigm to map binocular perceptual visual distortions in adult amblyopes and visually normal controls, measure their stability over time, and determine the relationship between strength of binocular single vision and distortion magnitude.
METHODS: Perceptual visual distortions were measured in 24 strabismic, anisometropic, or microtropic amblyopes (interocular acuity difference ≥ 0.200 logMAR or history of amblyopia treatment) and 10 controls (mean age 27.13 ± 10.20 years). The task was mouse-based target alignment on a stereoscopic liquid crystal display monitor, measure

Repeated viewing of a stimulus causes a change in perceptual sensitivity, known as a visual aftereffect. Similarly, in neuroimaging, repetitions of the same stimulus result in a reduction in the neural response, known as repetition suppression (RS). Previous research shows that aftereffects for faces are reduced in both children with autism and in first-degree relatives. With functional magnetic resonance imaging, we found that the magnitude of RS to faces in neurotypical participants was negatively correlated with individual differences in autistic traits. We replicated this finding in a seco

The "Rotating Snakes" figure elicits a clear sense of anomalous motion in stationary repetitive patterns. We used an event-related fMRI adaptation paradigm to investigate cortical mechanisms underlying the illusory motion. Following an adapting stimulus (S1) and a blank period, a probe stimulus (S2) that elicited illusory motion either in the same or in the opposite direction was presented. Attention was controlled by a fixation task, and control experiments precluded explanations in terms of artefacts of local adaptation, afterimages, or involuntary eye movements. Recorded BOLD responses were

We know that human neurocognitive systems rapidly and implicitly evaluate emotionally charged stimuli. But what about more everyday, frequently encountered kinds of objects, such as computer desktop icons and business logos? Do we rapidly and implicitly evaluate these more prosaic visual images, attitude objects that might only engender a mild sense of liking or disliking, if at all? To address this question, we asked participants to view a set of unfamiliar commercial logos in the context of a target identification task as brain electrical responses to these objects were recorded via event-re

Preterm birth is a risk factor for deficits of neurological and cognitive development. Four cohort studies are reported investigating the effects of very premature birth (<32 weeks gestation) on visual, visuocognitive and visuomotor function between birth and 6-7 years of age. The first study used two measures of early visual cortical function, orientation reversal visual event-related potentials (OR-VERP) and fixation shifts under competition. Both these functional measures of visual development correlated with the severity of brain abnormality observed on structural MRI at and before term, a
