Analysis of the Influence of Surface Modifications on the Fatigue Behavior of Hot Work Tool Steel Components.

Hot work tool steels (HWS) are widely used for high performance components as dies and molds in hot forging processes, where extreme process-related mechanical and thermal loads limit tool life. With the functionalizing and modification of tool surfaces with tailored surfaces, a promising approach is given to provide material flow control resulting in the efficient die filling of cavities while reducing the process forces. In terms of fatigue properties, the influence of surface modifications on surface integrity is insufficiently studied. Therefore, the potential of the machining processes of

Differences in time to return to work among patients undergoing simultaneous versus staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty.

AIMS: Many patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have severe osteoarthritis (OA) in both knees and may consider either simultaneous or staged bilateral TKA. The implications of simultaneous versus staged bilateral TKA for return to work are not well understood. We hypothesized that employed patients who underwent simultaneous bilateral TKA would have significantly fewer days missed from work compared with the sum of days missed from each operation for patients who underwent staged bilateral TKA. METHODS: The prospective arthroplasty registry at the Hospital for Special Surgery was

Metastatic Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma in Complete Remission: Morphological, Molecular, and Clinical Work-Up of a Rare Case.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) exhibits an exceedingly poor prognosis, and the current treatment options are, for most cases, palliative by nature. Few reports of long-time survivors exist, although in these patients, tumors often were limited to the thyroid and/or regional lymph nodes. We describe a 64-year-old male who developed a rapidly growing mass in the left thyroid lobe. A fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was consistent with ATC, and the patient underwent preoperative combined chemo- and radiotherapy followed by a hemithyroidectomy. The ensuing histopathological investigation w

Returning to Work Following an Injury: Practical Usage of a Predictive Model Based on a Nationwide Study.

Work absenteeism following an injury creates an economic burden on society and the individual. Programs encouraging return to work (RTW) should be implemented for high risk populations. The aim of this study was to identify the predictors for duration until RTW following an injury. The Israeli National Trauma Registry and the National Insurance Institute database (2008-2013) were linked. Logistic-regression models tested the probability not RTW within 1 month, 1 year and 2 years among 67% of the population and the quality of the model was examined among 33% of the population. The study populat

Primary cutaneous γδ T-cell lymphoma with unusual immunophenotype: A case report and review of published work.

Primary cutaneous γδ T-cell lymphoma (CGD-TCL) is a rare form of primary cutaneous lymphoma. The histopathological features of CGD-TCL are still unclear because of its rarity. Here, we report a case of a 77-year-old Japanese man who presented with a 9-month history of erythematous plaques on his left forearm. Skin biopsy specimens revealed the infiltration of atypical medium/large-sized lymphocytes from the epidermis to the deep dermis. Atypical lymphocytes were positive for CD3, CD5, CD8 and Vδ1, and negative for CD4, CD7, CD56, EBER-ISH, intracellular antigen-1, granzyme B and perforin. CD30

High body mass index and night shift work are associated with COVID-19 in health care workers.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the magnitude of COVID-19 spread and the associated risk factors among health care workers (HCWs), we conducted an in-hospital survey in a central Italian COVID Hospital. METHODS: Participants underwent nasopharyngeal swab and/or serum collection for SARS-CoV-2 IgG examination. We divided participants according to working status, into rotating-night shift workers (r-NSW) and day-workers. RESULTS: We found 30 cases of COVID-19 infection in a total of 1180 HCWs (2.5%). Most COVID-19-positive hospital employees were r-NSWs with significantly higher BMI than that of individu

The Association Between Work-Related Rumination and Executive Function Using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function.

Work-related rumination has been associated with a number of health complaints, however, little is known about the underlying factors associated with rumination. Previous work using proxy measures of executive function showed work-related rumination to be negatively associated with executive function. In this paper, we report two studies that examined the association between work-related rumination and executive function utilizing an ecological valid measure of executive function: the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF-A, Roth et al., 2005). In study 1 (N = 63), high, relat

Osteopathic Manual Treatment for Pain Severity, Functional Improvement, and Return to Work in Patients With Chronic Pain.

CONTEXT: Chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) is associated with disability, poor quality of life (QOL), and failure to return to work (RTW). Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) or osteopathic manual therapy (OMTh) are increasingly offered to patients with CNCP; however, the existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses in the literature that explore the effectiveness of OMTh have major limitations. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the quality of evidence documenting the effectiveness of OMTh for patients with CNCP using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluati

Workers with severe mental illness coping with clinical symptoms: Self-directed learning of work-health balance strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Most workers with a severe mental illness (SMI) experience brief job retention, usually under 6 months. Managing their clinical symptoms to maintain employment is a constant challenge. However, little is known about the personal initiatives these workers undertake to learn to manage their clinical symptoms at work. The study presented here documented, from an emic perspective, the self-directed learning of work-health balance strategies applied in the workplace. METHODS: The study was conducted with five adults with SMI employed in the competitive labour market and six support p

How the COVID-19 infection tsunami revolutionized the work of respiratory physiotherapists: an experience from Northern Italy.

Due to COVID-19 outbreak, to lighten the burden of acute and critical care hospitals, some respiratory rehabilitation departments have been used to host patients with COVID-19 in the post-acute phase. This new and unexpected situation required a change of roles and scheduling of the rehabilitation teams. In this manuscript we describe the unexpected and urgent organizational change of the Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation (CPR) service during the COVID-19 emergency in a Northern Italian rehabilitation hospital, focusing on the Respiratory Physiotherapists' (RPTs) role. Work Conditions, Social Incorporations, and Foodborne Diseases Risk: Reflections About the (Non)Compliance of Food Safety Practices.

The number of foodborne diseases has increased in all continents, and efforts must be made to control this urgent and expressive public health problem. This article aims to present and discuss situations related to the compliance and noncompliance of food safety practices (FSPs) in light of Bourdieu's social theory. This qualitative study was conducted in commercial restaurants in two cities in São Paulo, Brazil. Participant observation was used in the restaurants, and notes referring to the kitchen workers and their bosses' work processes were registered in field journals. Thematic type conte

Predictors of subsequent injury at work: findings from a prospective cohort of injured workers in New Zealand.

OBJECTIVES: People who have experienced a work-related injury can experience further work injuries over time. This study examines predictors of subsequent work-related injuries over 24 months among a cohort of injured workers. METHODS: Participants were those recruited to the earlier Prospective Outcomes of Injury Study (POIS) who had a work-related injury (the 'sentinel' injury). Data from POIS participant interviews were combined with administrative data from the Accident Compensation Corporation (New Zealand's no-fault universal injury insurer) and hospital discharge data. Modified Poisson

The Bergen 4-Day Treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Does It Work in a New Clinical Setting?

Sørlandet Hospital in Norway has a history of offering patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) cognitive behavior group therapy using 12 weekly sessions of 2.5 h each. A previous evaluation of this treatment has shown that 51.9% did not respond at post-treatment. Recently, a highly concentrated group-treatment format, the Bergen 4-day treatment (B4DT), has been shown to help more than 90% of patients with OCD post-treatment. Based on these positive results, it was decided to explore whether the B4DT could be a feasible format for delivering ERP at another clinic. Thirty-five consecut
