Accurate and rapid screening model for potential diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Prediction or early diagnosis of diabetes is crucial for populations with high risk of diabetes. METHODS: In this study, we assessed the ability of five popular classifiers (J48, AdaboostM1, SMO, Bayes Net, and Naïve Bayes) to identify individuals with diabetes based on nine non-invasive and easily obtained clinical features, including age, gender, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, history of cardiovascular disease or stroke, family history of diabetes, physical activity, work stress, and salty food preference. A total of 4205 data entries were obtained from annual physical exa

Poly(dimethylsiloxane)/graphene oxide composite sponge: a robust and reusable adsorbent for efficient oil/water separation.

The development of polymer sponges with large adsorption capacity, high oil/water selectivity and mechanical stability is an effective strategy for the separation of oil from oil-polluted water. The improvement in the adsorption performance for polymer sponges should not be accompanied by the sacrifice of mechanical properties and recycling stability, which are fundamental to their long-term operation in the cleanup of oil-spill accidents. In this work, we synthesized a robust and reusable sponge based on a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) frame coated stereoscopically with graphene oxide (GO) vi

An investigation of template anchoring strategy for molecularly imprinting materials based on nanomagnetic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes composites.

A template anchoring strategy for high performance molecularly imprinting materials (MI-materials) was displayed in the present work, which involved efficient usage of template molecules with the aid of functional monomer grafted on the support. The imprinting polymerization process was carried out on the surface of carboxyl functionalized Fe3O4@POSS (Fe3O4@POSS-COOH) anchoring with tetracycline templates as a demonstration. In this strategy, Fe3O4@POSS-COOH was first prepared via a simple copolymerization between methacrylic acid (MAA) and the residual end vinyl groups of Fe3O4@POSS. The carb

Pharmacokinetic studies unveiled the drug-drug interaction between trans-2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-d-glucopyranoside and emodin that may contribute to the idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity of Polygoni Multiflori Radix.

Polygoni Multiflori Radix (PMR) has been a reputable tonifying traditional Chinese medicine for a long history. However, clinical side effects regarding its idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity are occasionally reported. The containing anthraquinones, particularly emodin, could cause liver injury in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. It is well-known that some compounds could influence other compounds' pharmacokinetic parameters significantly. In this work, the influence of trans-2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (TSG) on the pharmacokinetic behavior of emodin in rats was evalu

Gender differences in fatigability and muscle activity responses to a short-cycle repetitive task.

PURPOSE: Epidemiological research has identified women to be more susceptible to developing neck-shoulder musculoskeletal disorders when performing low-force, repetitive work tasks. Whether this is attributable to gender differences in fatigability and motor control is currently unclear. This study investigated the extent to which women differ from men in fatigability and motor control while performing a short-cycle repetitive task. METHODS: 113 healthy young adults (58 women, 55 men) performed a standardized repetitive pointing task. The task was terminated when the subject's perceived exert

Size-controllable ultrathin carboxylated polypyrrole nanotube transducer for extremely sensitive 17β-estradiol FET-type biosensors.

17β-Estradiol is known as a steroid hormone in the human body but it is also known as a disruptor that can cause disequilibrium and dysfunction of the human immune system. Recently, there has been much interest in developing biosensors to detect low concentrations of 17β-estradiol. In this work, size-controllable aptamer conjugated ultrathin carboxylated polypyrrole nanotubes (A-UCPPyNTs) were fabricated as transducers in 17β-estradiol field-effect transistor (FET)-type biosensors. They were manufactured via a self-degradation method under several different conditions to control the diameter o

Cardiac myosin light chain phosphorylation and inotropic effects of a biased ligand, TRV120023, in a dilated cardiomyopathy model.

AIMS: Therapeutic approaches to treat familial dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), which is characterized by depressed sarcomeric tension and susceptibility to Ca(2+)-related arrhythmias, have been generally unsuccessful. Our objective in the present work was to determine the effect of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) biased ligand, TRV120023, on contractility of hearts of a transgenic mouse model of familial DCM with mutation in tropomyosin at position 54 (TG-E54K). Our rationale is based on previous studies, which have supported the hypothesis that biased G-protein-coupled receptor ligand

Current role of melatonin in pediatric neurology: clinical recommendations.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Melatonin, an indoleamine secreted by the pineal gland, plays a key role in regulating circadian rhythm. It has chronobiotic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging properties. METHODS: A conference in Rome in 2014 aimed to establish consensus on the roles of melatonin in children and on treatment guidelines. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The best evidence for efficacy is in sleep onset insomnia and delayed sleep phase syndrome. It is most effective when administered 3-5 h before physiological dim light melatonin onset. There is no evidence that extended-rel

Reliability and safety of functional capacity evaluation in patients with whiplash associated disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) are a burden for both individuals and society. It is recommended to evaluate patients with WAD at risk of chronification to enhance rehabilitation and promote an early return to work. In patients with low back pain (LBP), functional capacity evaluation (FCE) contributes to clinical decisions regarding fitness-for-work. FCE should have demonstrated sufficient clinimetric properties. Reliability and safety of FCE for patients with WAD is unknown. METHODS: Thirty-two participants (11 females and 21 males; mean age 39.6 years) with WAD (Grade I or

MaCH-admix: genotype imputation for admixed populations.

Imputation in admixed populations is an important problem but challenging due to the complex linkage disequilibrium (LD) pattern. The emergence of large reference panels such as that from the 1,000 Genomes Project enables more accurate imputation in general, and in particular for admixed populations and for uncommon variants. To efficiently benefit from these large reference panels, one key issue to consider in modern genotype imputation framework is the selection of effective reference panels. In this work, we consider a number of methods for effective reference panel construction inside a hi

Early-stage retinal melatonin synthesis impairment in streptozotocin-induced diabetic wistar rats.

PURPOSE: Retinal melatonin synthesis occurs in the photoreceptor layer in a circadian manner, controlling several physiologic rhythmic phenomena, besides being the most powerful natural free radical scavenger. The purpose of the present work was to evaluate the diurnal profile of retinal melatonin content and the regulation of its synthesis in the retina of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. METHODS: Diabetes was induced in male Wistar rats (12 hour-12 hour light/dark cycle) with streptozotocin. Control, diabetic, and insulin-treated diabetic animals were killed every 3 hours throughout th

Gender-specific effects of prenatal and adolescent exposure to tobacco smoke on auditory and visual attention.

Prenatal exposure to active maternal tobacco smoking elevates risk of cognitive and auditory processing deficits, and of smoking in offspring. Recent preclinical work has demonstrated a sex-specific pattern of reduction in cortical cholinergic markers following prenatal, adolescent, or combined prenatal and adolescent exposure to nicotine, the primary psychoactive component of tobacco smoke. Given the importance of cortical cholinergic neurotransmission to attentional function, we examined auditory and visual selective and divided attention in 181 male and female adolescent smokers and nonsmok

Individual differences in anatomy predict reading and oral language impairments in children.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) and specific language impairment (SLI) are disorders of language that differ in diagnostic criteria and outcome. DD is defined by isolated reading deficits. SLI is defined by poor receptive and expressive oral language skills. Reading deficits, although prevalent, are not necessary for the diagnosis of SLI. An enduring question is whether these two disorders are qualitatively different or simply differ quantitatively along a dimension of severity. Here we address this problem by examining neuroanatomical correlates of reading and language in children with learning d

Potential ergogenic effects of arginine and creatine supplementation.

The rationale for the use of nutritional supplements to enhance exercise capacity is based on the assumption that they will confer an ergogenic effect above and beyond that afforded by regular food ingestion alone. The proposed or advertised ergogenic effect of many supplements is based on a presumptive metabolic pathway and may not necessarily translate to quantifiable changes in a variable as broadly defined as exercise performance. L-arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid that has received considerable attention due to potential effects on growth hormone secretion and nitric oxide

The impact of infection and nutrition on gut function and growth in childhood.

Poor growth performance during infancy and early childhood is a frequent fact of life in most developing countries. Work in The Gambia has demonstrated that more than 43 % of observed growth faltering during the first 15 months of life can be explained by the presence of a mucosal enteropathy in the small intestine. Within communities the illness is very common: in the area investigated more than 95 % of infants above 8 months of age were affected, and on average they suffered a growth-limiting enteropathy for more than 75 % of their first year of life. Two mechanisms of weight loss have been
