Fulminant infectious endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus aureus with pseudoaneurysms in the superior mesenteric, hepatic, and popliteal arteries: a case report.

Staphylococcus aureus infectious endocarditis has a high mortality, major causes of death being cardiac failure, systemic embolism, and sepsis. Pseudoaneurysms, a rare complication of this infection, are not invariably fatal with appropriate treatment. A previously healthy 32-year-old man was found to have multiple cerebral infarctions, and infectious endocarditis with mitral valve vegetation was diagnosed by echocardiography. Because methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was identified from blood cultures, vancomycin was administered. Massive intracerebral hemorrhage in the left

Pleuroperitoneal Hernia in an Adult Patient.

INTRODUCTION: Pleuroperitoneal hernia is the most frequent diaphragmatic congenital hernia, appearing in 1 in 3,000 births. This diaphragmatic defect is located on the left side in 80% to 90% of cases. Pleuroperitoneal hernia is usually diagnosed in the first 8 weeks of life due to respiratory compromise caused by the herniation of abdominal organs into the thoracic cavity; therefore, adult presentation is a rare condition. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 55-year-old man with a history of long-term cigarette smoking who arrived at the emergency department with a chronic cough. Initi

A case of pleuroperitoneal communication in which establishing a laparoscopic pneumoperitoneum was useful for the detection of a fistula.

BACKGROUND: Pleuroperitoneal communication (PPC) is rarely observed, accounting for 1.6% of all patients who undergo continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Although there have been several reports concerning the management of this condition, we have encountered several cases in which control failed. We herein report a valuable case of PPC in which laparoscopic pneumoperitoneum with video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was useful for supporting the diagnosis and treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 58-year-old woman with chronic renal failure due to chronic renal inflam

Gastric and Large Colon Impactions Combined With Aggressive Enteral Fluid Therapy May Predispose to Large Colon Volvulus: 4 Cases.

To resolve large colon impactions, frequent enteral administration of large volumes of water (8-10 liters in a 500 kg horse) has been suggested. Furthermore, in large colon volvulus, the simultaneous presence of gastric impaction has been described as a possible predisposing factor. To describe the clinical and surgical features of horses with large colon volvulus associated with aggressive enteral fluid therapy performed to resolve an initial large colon impaction. Records of horses that underwent exploratory laparotomy at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Turin between 2012-2019 were revie

Management of Simple Hepatic Cyst.

Simple hepatic cysts are typically saccular, thin-walled masses with fluid-filled epithelial lined cavities. They arise from aberrant bile duct cells that develop during embryonic development. With the development of diagnostic modalities such as ultrasonography (US), CT, and MRI, simple hepatic cysts are frequently detected in clinical examinations. US is the most useful and noninvasive tool for diagnosis of simple hepatic cysts and can usually differentiate simple hepatic cysts from abscesses, hemangiomas, and malignancies. Cysts with irregular walls, septations, calcifications, or daughter

Small Molecule Differentiate PDX1-Expressing Cells Derived from Human Endometrial Stem Cells on PAN Electrospun Nanofibrous Scaffold: Applications for the Treatment of Diabetes in Rat.

In this study, we designed an engineered tissue and transplanted it to an animal model, trying to take an effective step toward meeting the needs of diabetic patients. Here, human endometrial cells were differentiated into PDX1-expressing cells using a small molecule of Y-27632 on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun scaffolds and transplanted into diabetic rats. PAN nanofibers were made by electrospinning. RT-PCR and immunocytochemical analysis were performed to express pancreatic precursor (PP) genes. The differentiated cells were then transplanted into the abdominal cavity of diabetic rats w

Detection of Feline Coronavirus in Feline Effusions by Immunofluorescence Staining and Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction.

Feline coronavirus (FCoV), the pathogen for feline infectious peritonitis, is a lethal infectious agent that can cause effusions in the pleural and abdominal cavities in domestic cats. To study the epidemiology of FCoV in Taiwan, 81 FIP-suspected sick cats with effusive specimens were recruited to test for FCoV infection using immunofluorescence staining and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction as detection methods, and viral RNAs were recovered from the specimens to conduct genotyping and phylogenetic analysis based on the spike (S) protein gene. The results revealed that a total o

Ectopic Pregnancy: Diagnosis and Management.

Ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized ovum implants outside of the uterine cavity. In the United States, the estimated prevalence of ectopic pregnancy is 1% to 2%, and ruptured ectopic pregnancy accounts for 2.7% of pregnancy-related deaths. Risk factors include a history of pelvic inflammatory disease, cigarette smoking, fallopian tube surgery, previous ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. Ectopic pregnancy should be considered in any patient presenting early in pregnancy with vaginal bleeding or lower abdominal pain in whom intrauterine pregnancy has not yet been established. The definit

Three-dimensional ultrasonographic features of diamniotic conjoined twins with body stalk anomaly.

BACKGROUND: Since conjoined twins were thought to be monoamniotic in the past, diamniotic conjoined twins would be improbable theoretically. Body stalk anomaly is a severe defect of the body wall, which is rare among twins. Body stalk anomaly in monochorionic diamniotic conjoined twins has never been reported prenatally so far as we know. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present an extremely rare case of concordant body stalk anomaly in monochorionic diamniotic conjoined twins. Ultrasonography at 9 + 5 weeks revealed one chorionic and two amniotic cavities, close apposition of abdomen, limited move

Pressurized Intra-peritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) via Endoscopical Microcatheter System.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) is becoming an increasingly widespread approach for delivering intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (IPC) by means of a chemoaerosol. Currently, the aerosol dispersion is achieved by using a special micropump (MIP®). However, the delivery of a chemoaerosol into the abdominal cavity is not limited to the MIP®. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility, drug penetration and distribution of PIPAC via an established endoscopical microcatheter (MC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: An established ex vivo PIPAC model containing native fr
