Direct messaging to parents/guardians to improve adolescent immunizations.

PURPOSE: To study the impact on adolescent immunization rates of direct messages to parents/guardians. METHODS: Electronic health record rules identified adolescents needing an immunization. Parents/guardians of adolescents were messaged via a single vendor using automated text, prerecorded voice, and/or postcard. RESULTS: Parents/guardians of 3,393 patients, ages 11-18 years, with one or more primary care visits in the prior 2 years, identified as needing (average of 2.04 years) a vaccination (meningococcal conjugate, human papillomavirus, or tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis vaccines) wer

Examining hookah smoking among a cohort of adolescent ever smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests that hookah smoking is growing among adolescents, particularly among those with a history of cigarette smoking, and is an emerging public health concern. We examined hookah use and its correlates among a sample of adolescents who have ever smoked and may be considered high risk for hookah use. METHODS: We examined differences between hookah users and nonusers among a cohort of 951 adolescents (75.3% of the baseline sample, mean age 17.6 years at 24 months), consisting exclusively of youth who reported ever smoking cigarettes who were participating in a longitud

Early pubertal onset and its relationship with sexual risk taking, substance use and anti-social behaviour: a preliminary cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In many countries age at pubertal onset has declined substantially. Relatively little attention has been paid to how this decline may affect adolescent behaviours such as substance use, violence and unprotected sex and consequently impact on public health. METHODS: In the UK, two opportunistic samples (aged 16-45 years), paper-based (n = 976) and online (n = 1117), examined factors associated with earlier pubertal onset and whether earlier age of onset predicted sexual risk-taking, substance use and anti-social behaviours during early adolescence. RESULTS: Overall, 45.6% of femal

Effects of an oral health education program targeting oral malodor prevention in Japanese senior high school students.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has suggested that oral malodor could be a useful motivational tool for increasing the awareness of oral health in adolescents and improving their oral health behaviors. Hence, the aims of this research were: (1) to develop an oral health education program that included oral malodor prevention and (2) to test the effects of the program in Japanese senior high school students by comparing the changes of oral health outcomes between the intervention and control groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were 163 Grade 1 and 135 Grade 2 senior high school students in To

Time to Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy Among US Military-Affiliated Adolescents and Young Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Use of exogenous sex steroid hormones, when indicated, may improve outcomes in adolescents and young adults with gender incongruence. Little is known about factors associated with the time from diagnosis of gender dysphoria to initiation of gender-affirming hormone therapy. Identification of inequities in time to treatment may have clinical, policy, and research implications. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate factors associated with time to initiation of gender-affirming hormone therapy after a diagnosis of gender dysphoria in adolescents and young adults receiving care within the US Militar

Body image and health-related behaviors among fitspirit participants.

BACKGROUND: Body image variables such as body size perception (BSP) and body size dissatisfaction (BSD) can influence health-related behaviors. However, few studies have investigated these body image variables in adolescent girls participating in a physical activity intervention. Therefore, the study objectives were to examine the 1) associations between health-related behaviors (physical activity, screen-time, eating habits and sleep duration) and BSP and BSD among girls participating in FitSpirit, a physical activity intervention for girls; and 2) influence of weight control practices on the

Move more, scroll less? Physical activity, smartphone use, and subjective body shape perception in adolescents: within-person associations in gender-stratified analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective body shape perception is an important adolescent health issue linked to psychological well-being and weight related behaviors. This study examined within-person associations among subjective body shape perception, physical activity, and smartphone use separately among Korean adolescent boys and girls. METHODS: Using five-wave data from the Korean Youth Health Behavior Panel Survey (2019-2023), we estimated two-way fixed-effects models controlling for time-invariant individual characteristics and wave-specific factors. The analytic sample included 4,518 adolescents (bo

An artificial intelligence approach to support adolescent suicide prevention initiatives in the United States.

Adolescent suicide remains a critical public health issue in the United States, with complex, interrelated risk and protective factors operating across multiple levels of the social ecology. This study presents the design of a novel agent-based model (ABM) created to simulate the progression of suicidal behaviors among U.S. adolescents ages 12-19 years and evaluate the effectiveness of suicide prevention strategies. The model integrates data from eight nationally representative datasets and is grounded in a comprehensive conceptual framework developed by CDC's National Center for Injury Preven

Association between exposure to tobacco control measures and current nicotine use among adolescents in Saudi Arabia: Evidence from the 2022 global youth tobacco survey.

OBJECTIVES: The World Health Organization's six tobacco control strategies (Monitor, Protect, Offer help, Warn, Enforce, and Raise; MPOWER) aim to reduce tobacco use, yet little is known about their impact on individual-level adolescent nicotine use in Middle Eastern countries. This study examined whether exposure to MPOWER policies is associated with current nicotine use among adolescents in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used nationally representative data from the 2022 Global Youth Tobacco Survey conducted in schools across Saudi Arabia. The analytic sample included 5

Presentations of eating disorders among youth in Türkiye before and after COVID-19: lessons learned for the future.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly influenced adolescent mental health, particularly contributing to increased presentations of eating disorders (EDs). This study investigates how referral patterns, diagnostic profiles, and comorbidities changed among adolescents in Türkiye before and during the pandemic. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted at Ankara City Hospital, including adolescents aged 10-18 years who were referred for ED-related concerns between September 2019 and August 2021. The data were grouped into pre-pandemic (6 months) and pandemic (18 months) p

Management of Pediatric Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: A Review.

With significant increases noted in adolescent marijuana use across the United States, perhaps as a result of legislative changes over the past half-decade, clinicians must be increasingly aware of the potential negative health effects. One such effect that warrants concern is cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) in the pediatric population. A systematic review of the literature was performed to determine the safety and efficacy of management strategies for CHS using PubMed, Scopus, the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL), Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. Strategies employed by sexual minority adolescents to cope with minority stress.

Sexual minority adolescents (SMA) experience disparities in health and behavioral health outcomes, including high rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, substance use, HIV risk behavior, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. These outcomes are commonly attributed to minority stress. Stress experiences are different for SMA than their adult counterparts. For example, disclosing their sexual orientation may be more likely to result in homelessness because these youth more often live with parents or other family members. Although stress in this population has been explored in previous resear

DSM-IV nicotine dependence symptom characteristics for recent-onset smokers.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated how well DSM-IV nicotine dependence symptoms measure an underlying dependence construct for recent-onset daily and nondaily smokers. METHODS: Based on a nationally representative sample of 2,758 recent-onset adolescent smokers from the National Surveys on Drug Use and Health, we used multiple group item response theory analysis to assess 7 symptoms representing DSM-IV diagnostic features of nicotine dependence. RESULTS: After controlling for age, gender, current smoking quantity, and length of smoking exposure, all 7 DSM-IV symptoms were invariant across no

Abstinence and teenagers: prevention counseling practices of health care providers serving high-risk patients in the United States.

CONTEXT: Abstinence-only education has had little demonstrable impact on teenagers' sexual behaviors, despite significant policy and funding efforts. Given the struggle over resources to improve teenagers' reproductive health outcomes, the views of clinicians serving teenagers at high risk for unintended pregnancy and STDs merit particular attention. METHODS: In 2005, a qualitative study with 31 clinicians serving low-income, at-risk patients was conducted. A semistructured interview guide was used to ask clinicians about adolescent pregnancy, HIV and STD prevention counseling, and when they

DNA methylation as a possible mechanism linking childhood adversity and health: results from a 2-sample mendelian randomization study.

Childhood adversity is an important risk factor for adverse health across the life course. Epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation (DNAm), are a hypothesized mechanism linking adversity to disease susceptibility. Yet, few studies have determined whether adversity-related DNAm alterations are causally related to future health outcomes or if their developmental timing plays a role in these relationships. Here, we used 2-sample mendelian randomization to obtain stronger causal inferences about the association between adversity-associated DNAm loci across development (ie, birth, childhoo

Do lifestyle risk behaviors affect anxiety, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation among adolescents?

Cultivating and maintaining good mental health and a healthy lifestyle during adolescence-the period when physical and psychological development occurs-is important. Further, an unhealthy lifestyle can have long-term effects on health. Few studies have examined the multiple effects of lifestyle risk behavior on mental health, and the behaviors that interact with this relationship remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the associations between anxiety, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation and a cumulative unhealthy lifestyle. The study included 54,948 participants from the 2020 Korea
