Factors associated with weight loss, low BMI, and malnutrition among nursing home patients: a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss and poor nutrition are important quality measures in long term care. Long term care professionals need to identify factors associated with weight loss and poor nutrition to target high-risk patients. METHODS: The authors systematically searched Medline and CINAHL databases and included English language studies with more than 100 subjects analyzed, published after January 1, 1990, with data on factors associated with at least one of the following: weight loss, low body mass index (BMI), low Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) score, or other standard measure of malnutriti

Factors affecting the incident juvenile bone tumors in an Austrian case-control study.

This case-control study investigates etiologically important factors for juvenile osteosarcomas and possible reasons for the relative scarcity of their incidence in the population. Information on a variety of risk factors, psychosocial factors, and factors possibly occurring in early childhood was obtained by interviewing 88 patients (ages 8-25 years) with osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcomas and other bone tumors, and three age- and sex-matched control groups (hospital, neighbour and family controls), and their mothers. For both sexes, children's diseases in their history, which increased the risk

Risk Factors for Progression to Glenohumeral Arthritis After Arthroscopic Anterior Stabilization in a Young and High-Demand Population.

BACKGROUND: While arthroscopic stabilization for anterior glenohumeral instability is successful in preventing recurrent dislocations, progression to glenohumeral arthritis remains concerning. Age, anchor number, and capsular volume shrinkage have been previously established as risk factors for progression to arthritis in patients who underwent arthroscopic anterior stabilization. However, the rate of and risk factors for arthritis in young populations have not been well characterized. PURPOSE: To evaluate the rate of progression to glenohumeral arthritis and identify potential risk factors a

Significant antibiotic use variations in testicular torsion surgery among us free-standing children's hospitals.

PURPOSE: There is no robust evidence for the efficacy of intraoperative antibiotics in preventing infections in testicular torsion surgery, the incidence of which is reported to be <0.2 %. In the absence of clear guidelines regarding the appropriate use of antibiotic prophylaxis, the factors influencing these differences in practice patterns remain unclear. Our study aimed to identify both patient and institution-level factors affecting whether a pediatric patient undergoing emergency testicular detorsion (orchiopexy or orchiectomy) will receive antibiotic prophylaxis. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Risk factors for thromboembolic complications in isolated severe head injury.

PURPOSE: Patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are at high risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). The aim of the present study is to identify factors independently associated with VTE events. Specifically, we hypothesized that the mechanism of penetrating head trauma might be an independent factor associated with increased VTE events when compared with blunt head trauma. METHODS: The ACS-TQIP database (2013-2019) was queried for all patients with isolated severe head injuries (AIS 3-5) who received VTE prophylaxis with either unfractionated heparin or low-molecular-weight heparin.
