Biological background knowledge and learning from a drug and alcohol education program.

The authors asked whether having a base of relevant biological knowledge put school children in a better position to understand the effects of alcohol and cocaine and to learn about these effects when exposed to a curriculum presenting a physiological theory of drug action. Participants were 337 ethnically diverse 3rd- through 6th-grade students who were pretested, trained, and posttested. Multiple regression analyses revealed that knowledge of the basic functions of the heart, blood, and brain predicted certain drug-knowledge variables. Students with greater biological background knowledge al

Sleep EEG in mice that are deficient in the potassium channel subunit K.v.3.2.

Voltage-gated potassium channels containing the K.v.3.2 subunit are expressed in specific neuronal populations such as thalamocortical neurons and fast spiking GABAergic interneurons of the neocortex and hippocampus. These K(+)-channels play a major role in the regulation of firing properties in these neurons. We investigated whether the K.v.3.2 subunit contributes to the generation of the sleep electroencephalogram (EEG). The EEG of a frontal and occipital derivation of K.v.3.2-deficient mice and littermate controls was recorded during a 24-h baseline, 6-h sleep deprivation (SD) and subsequen

Significance of autonomic nervous system activity in functional dyspepsia.

The purpose of this study was to examine if patients with functional dyspepsia could be separated into meaningful groups based on their autonomic function. Subjects were divided into two groups, and symptoms, gastric myoelectrical activity, gastric emptying, and psychological factors were compared. Group 1 had less autonomic variability but more cardiac reactivity than group 2. Symptom reports did not differ between groups. Group 1 had higher neuroticism scores than group 2, while group 2 showed greater tachyarrhythmia in response to drinking water than group 1. The relatively low autonomic va

Fractional end-tidal CO2 as an index of the effects of stress on math performance and verbal memory of test-anxious adolescents.

The research reported here was derived from the hypothesis that hyperventilation contributes to the decrement in performance observed in test-anxious students. From this point of view, students identified as test-anxious would be expected to hyperventilate to a greater extent than non-test-anxious students when confronted with the stress of testing. The experiment reported here tested this hypothesis by continuous capnographic monitoring of end-tidal CO2 and respiration frequency of 16 high- and 16 low-test-anxious boys and girls (ages 12-14 years) before and during tests of math and word-reca

Muscimol and midazolam do not potentiate each other's effects on sleep EEG in the rat.

The interaction of a gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABAA) receptor agonist and a benzodiazepine-type modulator of GABAA receptors on sleep was investigated. Low doses of muscimol (0.3 mg/kg) and the benzodiazepine midazolam (1.5 mg/kg) were administered alone and in combination, in random order, to eight rats. All injections were given intraperitoneally at light onset. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram were recorded during the first 6 h post injection. Compared with vehicle, muscimol hardly affected the time spent in non-rapid eye movement sleep (non-REMS) and REMS, but significantly

Comparison of simulated driving performance in narcolepsy and sleep apnea patients.

Many patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or narcolepsy have difficulty driving and increased automobile accidents. Previously we have shown that OSA patients perform poorly on a laboratory-based divided-attention driving test (DADT). Patients with narcolepsy may be as sleepy as OSA patients, so we compared performance on the DADT of OSA patients with that of narcolepsy patients. Twenty-one male OSA patients [age 49.3 +/- 12.7 (SD) years; apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) 73 +/- 29] 21 age- and sex-matched controls, and 16 narcoleptics (12 males, four females; age 39.6 +/- 15.2 years) underwen

Muscular disorders in tension-type headache.

In order to evaluate the diagnostic criteria for muscular disorders in tension-type headache, pericranial muscle tenderness and pressure pain thresholds were studied in a random sample population of 735 adults aged 25-64. In addition, quantitative EMGs were recorded in 547 of these subjects. The correlation between the three diagnostic tests was assessed and the discriminality and cut-off points were analysed using Receiver Operating Characteristics analysis. Local tenderness from the temporal muscles was closely related to the total tenderness scores from 14 pairs of muscles. In chronic tensi

Aggression among psychiatric inpatients in Greece.

We studied, during 5 consecutive days, the prevalence, types and demographic, historical and clinical correlates of overt aggression in a population of 136 acute and chronic inpatients with mainly a diagnosis of psychotic disorder. Almost one fourth of them exhibited some sort of aggressive behavior. Verbal aggression was by far the most frequent type followed-in decreasing order-by physical aggression, aggression against property and self-aggression. Past threats of violence and attacks on others as well as concurrent motor excitement, agitation, low tolerance of frustration, difficulty in de

Longitudinal follow-up of amenorrhea in eating disorders.

The authors recruited 229 treatment-seeking anorexic and bulimic women for a prospective, longitudinal study. Telephone interviews were arranged every 3 months for at least 1 year for 225 patients. At intake, 132 subjects were menstruating, 34 subjects were taking oral contraceptives, 5 subjects had an organic cause for amenorrhea (e.g., hysterectomy), and 58 subjects were amenorrheic. Each patient met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, third edition, revised (DSM-III-R) criteria for anorexia nervosa (AN, N = 41), bulimia nervosa (BN, N = 98), or AN/BN (N = 90). Does dizocilpine (MK-801) selectively block the enhanced responsiveness to repeated amphetamine administration?

In order to examine the hypothesis that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are selectively involved in the development of stimulant sensitization, we characterized the interaction between acute and chronic dizocilpine (MK-801) + amphetamine using a detailed behavioral analysis, including concurrent assessment of the locomotor and stereotype components of the stimulant response and continuous monitoring of all the various phases of the emergent sensitization. The results showed that MK-801 (0.125 mg/kg) significantly affected the acute response to amphetamine (0.5, 1.75, 4.0 mg/kg), increasi

Noise stress and the development of benzodiazepine dependence in the rat.

Rats housed in conditions of noise stress were given daily injections of diazepam (4 mg/kg). Significant tolerance developed to the sedative effects within 5 days of treatment, as measured by head dipping and motor activity in the holeboard and by the number of closed arm entries in the plus-maze. These results are in agreement with other reports of rapid tolerance to sedative effects. However, in contrast to the usual finding of tolerance to anxiolytic actions after 2-3 weeks of treatment, in this study no tolerance developed after 23 days of treatment to diazepam's anxiolytic effects in the

Ejaculation induced changes in escape latency in the hot plate test: pharmacological analysis of anxiolytic versus analgesic effect.

The possible changes in nociception at various stages of male sexual behaviour were explored in the hot plate test. Although other authors have reported an antinociceptive effect of mating, we failed to find this effect on the hot plate test after several sexual behaviour events. To further explore the possible antinociceptive action of copulation we administered a suboptimal analgesic dose of morphine (0.3 mg/kg i.p.). No change in nociception were observed in animals treated with a subthreshold dose of morphine and tested in the nociception test after ejaculation were observed. Since previou

Brain stem modulation of spatial receptive field properties of single cells in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of the cat.

1. We studied the effect of electrical stimulation of the peribrachial region (PBR) in the brain stem on the visual response of single cells in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) to a light slit presented in a series of positions across the receptive field. The response was plotted against slit position, giving a spatial receptive field profile. 2. PBR stimulation markedly increased the visual response. In the middle of the receptive field center, the absolute response increase was considerably larger than in the peripheral parts of the receptive field or than the increase of spontan

Evidence of a perceptual-encoding deficit in narcolepsy?

Body temperature, vigilance, memory, information processing and motor function were examined in 10 unmedicated narcoleptics and 10 matched controls at four different times of day. Time of day and body temperature were not related to performance. Narcoleptics displayed selective cognitive deficits in response latency, word recall, and estimation of frequency. Narcoleptics did not differ from controls in motor speed, vigilance, information processing speed or decision-making accuracy. We propose that a perceptual-encoding deficit may underlie the problems in memory and complex reaction time asso

Specific features of military low-altitude flight noise: criteria for risk of damage and physiological effects.

The impact of sound from military low-altitude flying (75 m) is characterized by high maximum levels of up to 125 dB, a rapid rise in sound pressure level (steepest 10-dB slope up to 111 dB/s, mean value 36 dB/s), and occasional (30%) follow-up oscillations of up to around 100 dB. The energy within this broadband sound is very often concentrated primarily in the 0.8 to 4 kHz range. A criterion for the risk of damage can be applied using constant-frequency spectral dose analysis in order to establish, for example, how many overflight events might be regarded as tolerable. We can also draw on fi

Preattentive processing, preparedness and phobias: effects of instruction on conditioned electrodermal responses to masked and non-masked fear-relevant stimuli.

We hypothesized that autonomic responses conditioned to fear-relevant stimuli, in contrast to responses conditioned to neutral stimuli, can be elicited after only an automatic, non-conscious analysis of the stimulus. Consequently, they may be expected to be insensitive to verbal instructions. Normal subjects were conditioned to either fear-relevant stimuli (snakes or spiders) or neutral stimuli (flowers or mushrooms) in a differential conditioning paradigm with shock as the unconditioned stimulus. In a subsequent extinction series, half of the subjects were shown the conditioned stimuli under

Stimulation at a site of auditory-somatosensory convergence in the medial geniculate nucleus is an effective unconditioned stimulus for fear conditioning.

The medial division of the medial geniculate nucleus (MGm) and the posterior intralaminar nucleus (PIN) are necessary for fear conditioning to an auditory conditioned stimulus (CS), receive both auditory and somatosensory input, and project to the amygdala, which is involved in production of fear conditioned responses. If CS-unconditioned stimulus (US) convergence in the MGm-PIN is critical for fear conditioning, then microstimulation of this area should serve as an effective US during classical conditioning, in place of standard footshock. Guinea pigs underwent conditioning (40-60 trials) usi

Mental play in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

A new phenomenon, found only in Gilles de la Tourette (GTS) patients, and which we have called 'mental play', is described. It was compared with the phenomenon of counting, which occurred in both GTS and obsessive-compulsive patients. In the GTS patients both mental play and counting were best characterised as playful impulsions. In contrast to the GTS patients, the counting of the obsessive-compulsive patients was in line with their obsessive-compulsive behaviour. These findings suggest that repetitive symptoms in GTS patients, even when they share superficial similarities with obsessive-comp

Infants' responsiveness to the auditory and visual attributes of a sounding/moving stimulus.

Responses to unimodal and multimodal attributes of a compound auditory/visual stimulus were investigated in 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-month-old infants. First, infants were habituated to a compound stimulus consisting of a visual stimulus that moved up and down on a video monitor and a sound that occurred each time the visual stimulus reversed direction at the bottom. Once each infant met a habituation criterion, a series of test trials was administered to assess responsiveness to the components of the compound stimulus. Response was defined as the total duration of visual fixation in each trial. In
