Auricular hematoma commonly arises from trauma, often leading to significant morbidity if not addressed promptly. Traditional management techniques frequently result in high recurrence rates and may not prevent the development of cauliflower ear. We describe a case of a 12-year-old girl with autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, presenting with a persistent, firm, and dark red mass on her right pinna following previous treatment for an auricular hemangioma. The innovative 'hole-punch' Technique was employed to manage this recurrent auricular hematoma. This technique, utilizing a

AIMS AND METHOD: Non-attendance at out-patient appointments of adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) services incurs significant costs and contributes to lost service provision and unmet clinical needs. This cross-sectional study of clinical contacts, between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023 in a specialist adult ADHD service, aimed to identify factors, including type of consultation, associated with non-attendance.
RESULTS: Of 3673 organised clinic appointments, 2815 (77%) were attended: 2314 (82%) by telephone and 501 (18%) as in-person appointments; non-attendance rates were 17

UNLABELLED: Aarskog syndrome (AAS) is an X-linked human disease that affects the skeletal formation and embryonic morphogenesis and is caused by mutations in the FGD1 gene. Patients typically show distinctive skeletal and genital developmental abnormalities, but a broad spectrum of clinical phenotypes has been observed. We report here on the clinical and molecular analysis of a family that reveals a novel FGD1 mutation in a 9-year-old boy displaying extreme craniofacial dysplasia associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Sequencing of FGD1 revealed a novel mutation in exon 7 at

Executive dysfunction (ED) is a prominent and often disabling feature of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD). Few studies have examined treatments. Given the role of noradrenergic pathology in ED, atomoxetine, a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor indicated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), may be a potential treatment for PD-related ED. Twelve patients with PD and disabling ED completed an 8-week pilot open-label, flexible dose (25-100 mg/day) trial of atomoxetine. On primary outcome measures, atomoxetine was associated with improved ED based on the Clinical Glob

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is believed to be a condition primarily of middle to older age. However, it can have its onset in childhood. Five illustrative case histories with an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance are described. A mother and her 3 children (age: 6 1/2, 4 and 1 1/2 years) as well as a 16-year-old patient from a second family have typical RLS signs of leg discomfort (paresthesias) and motor restlessness prevalent at night and at rest, with temporary relief by activity. Polysomnography or videotaping revealed periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) and, in some cases, involun

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review recent studies published from 2019 to 2024 examining slow waves and sleep spindles abnormalities across neurodevelopmental, mood, trauma-related, and psychotic disorders using polysomnography and Electroencephalogram (EEG).
RECENT FINDINGS: Individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) showed higher slow-spindle activity, while findings on slow-wave activity were mixed. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) showed inconsistent results with some evidence of lower spindle chirp and slow-wave amplitude. Individuals with depression display

Data from the National Health Interview Survey. In 2005-2006, 15% of U.S. children aged 4-17 years had parents who talked to a health care provider or school staff about their child's emotional or behavioral difficulties. This included 18% of boys and 11% of girls. Approximately 5% of children were prescribed medication for difficulties with emotions or behavior. A large majority of these children (89%) were prescribed medication for difficulties with concentration, hyperactivity, or impulsivity, which are symptoms of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Approximately 5% of childre

Youth with learning differences (e.g., specific learning disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) encounter exacerbated psychological and behavioral challenges compared to typically developing peers. Peer mentoring has been shown to be beneficial in addressing such challenges, yet there is limited research on online peer mentorship programs for this population. This study investigates the perceived benefits of an online peer mentoring program on mentees' mental health, well-being, and behavior across 10 outcomes: anxiety, depression, fear, cognitive challenges, behavioral concern

Background: Emerging evidence suggests that the maternal microbiome plays a crucial role in shaping fetal neurodevelopment, immune programming, and metabolic health. Dysbiosis during pregnancy-whether gastrointestinal, oral, or vaginal-can significantly influence pregnancy outcomes and long-term child health. Materials and Methods: The search was performed using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar including research published from January 2000 to January 2025. The keywords used were "Fetal Programming", " Maternal Immune Activation", "Maternal microbiome", "Microbiota-Gut-Brai

Juvenile Huntington's disease (JHD) is rare. In the first decade of life speech difficulties, rigidity, and dystonia are common clinical motor symptoms, whereas onset in the second decade motor symptoms may sometimes resemble adult-onset Huntington's disease (AOHD). Cognitive decline is mostly detected by declining school performances. Behavioral symptoms in general do not differ from AOHD but may be confused with autism spectrum disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and lead to misdiagnosis and/or diagnostic delay. JHD specific features are epilepsy, ataxia, spasticity, pain, i

Maternal health during gestational period is undoubtedly critical in shaping optimal fetal development and future health of the offspring. Gestational diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder occurring in pregnancy with an alarming increasing incidence worldwide during recent years. Over the years, there is a growing body of evidence that uncontrolled maternal hyperglycaemia during pregnancy can potentially have detrimental effect on the neurodevelopment of the offspring. Both human and animal data have linked maternal diabetes with motor and cognitive impairment, as well as autism spectrum d

We report the finding of two copy number variants (CNVs) in a 12-year-old boy presenting both with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Clinical features included aggressive behavior, mood instability, suicidal statements, repetitive and restrictive behavior, sensitivity to noise, learning problems and dyslexia, though no intellectual disability was present. Using array-based comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH), we identified two CNVs, both triplex duplications of 324 kb on 3p26.3, and 284 kb on 4q13.1, respectively. One of the CNVs is l

Substance abuse in adolescents is undertreated in the United States. Family physicians are well positioned to recognize substance use in their patients and to take steps to address the issue before use escalates. Comorbid mental disorders among adolescents with substance abuse include depression, anxiety, conduct disorder, and attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder. Office-, home-, and school-based drug testing is not routinely recommended. Screening tools for adolescent substance abuse include the CRAFFT questionnaire. Family therapy is crucial in the management of adolescent substance use

The STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) potential of youth with cognitive disabilities is often dismissed through problematic perceptions of STEM ability as natural and of youth with cognitive disabilities as unable. National data on more than 15,000 adolescents from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 first suggest that, among youth with disabilities, youth with medicated attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have the highest levels of STEM achievement, and youth with learning or intellectual disabilities typically have the lowest. Undergraduates with med

We analyzed data for 6,458 children with chronic conditions. The most prevalent diagnoses were mood disorders (8.6%), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; 7.4%), conduct disorders (6.1%), and anxiety disorders (4.8%). Adjusted odds of having a mental health diagnosis increased with age for mood disorders and anxiety disorders and decreased with age for ADHD and conduct disorders. When compared with females, males had lower odds of being diagnosed with mood and anxiety disorders and higher odds of being diagnosed with ADHD and conduct disorders. Blacks had lower odds of being diagnos

This study aimed to establish the linguistic validity of content on a scale based on DSM-5 criteria to evaluate symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents, aimed at parents and teachers. It is a psychometric instrumental research, which included the participation of nine experts in ADHD and a pilot test with fifteen parents and teachers, in order to adapt the instrument to the sociocultural characteristics of the Spanish-speaking population. The methodology used is rigorous and appropriate for the proposed objective. The V-Aiken coefficient was used

OBJECTIVES: Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently experience both emotion regulation difficulties and sleep disturbances. Although theories of insomnia and studies in non-ADHD samples suggest a link between poor emotion regulation and insomnia, this relationship is understudied in ADHD. We examined whether difficulties regulating emotions were associated with insomnia symptoms in adults with ADHD, and whether this association was moderated by gender, age (<30 or ≥30 years), or eveningness preference.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed in

Adolescence is frequently called the second period of brain maturation. In Tourette disorder (TD), the clinical trajectory of tics and associated psychiatric co-morbidities varies significantly across individuals during the transition from adolescence to adulthood. In this study, we aimed to identify patterns of resting-state functional connectivity that differentiate adolescents with Tourette disorder from their neurotypical peers, and to monitor symptom-specific functional changes over time. We employed a multivariate analysis based on a support vector machine (SVM) to predict patterns of re
