Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) provides physical protection to the central nervous system as well as an essential homeostatic environment for the normal functioning of neurons. Additionally, it has been proposed that the pulsatile movement of CSF may assist in glymphatic clearance of brain metabolic waste products implicated in neurodegeneration. In awake humans, CSF flow dynamics are thought to be driven primarily by cerebral blood volume fluctuations resulting from a number of mechanisms, including a passive vascular response to blood pressure variations associated with cardiac and respiratory cy

BACKGROUND: Autonomic nervous system dysfunction is implicated in the development of hypothalamic obesity. We investigated the relationship between hypothalamic involvement (HI), central obesity, and cardiac autonomic dysfunction by assessing heart rate variability (HRV) indices in patients with childhood-onset craniopharyngioma.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 48 patients (28 males, 10-30 years old) with hypothalamic damage after childhood-onset craniopharyngioma was performed. Postoperative HI was graded as mild (n = 19) or extensive (n = 29) on magnetic resonance imaging. Anthropometry

Chronic cancer-related symptoms (stress, fatigue, pain, depression, insomnia) may be linked with sympathetic nervous system over-activation and autonomic imbalance. Decreased heart rate variability (HRV) is an indicator of autonomic dysregulation that is commonly observed among cancer survivors. HRV biofeedback (HRVB) training induces HRV coherence, which maximizes HRV and facilitates autonomic and cardiorespiratory homeostasis. This randomized, wait-list-controlled, pilot intervention trial tested the hypothesis that HRVB can improve HRV coherence and alleviate cancer-related symptoms. The in

AIMS: Disorders of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) have a variable degree of clinical relevance in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we assessed whether subclinical autonomic dysfunction, as evaluated by a complete battery of autonomic function tests (AFTs), correlates with PD progression.
METHODS: A series of 27 consecutive patients with PD underwent extensive ANS investigations including the head-up tilt test (HUTT), Valsalva maneuver, deep-breathing test, and handgrip test (HG); further, they performed 123I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy.

PURPOSE: Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects autonomic nervous system activity and is sensitive to physiological stress induced by surgery. This study is a secondary, post hoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial aimed at evaluating changes in HRV following major and minor thoracic surgery, and investigating whether postoperative respiratory physiotherapy can modulate these changes. In a prospective, randomized design, two physiotherapy interventions, including positive expiratory pressure (PEP) and inspiratory muscle training (IMT), were compared to assess their effects on HRV.

Introduction Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is a prevalent psychiatric condition increasingly associated with autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Specifically, impaired cardiovagal tone, a marker of reduced parasympathetic modulation of cardiac function, has been linked to emotional dysregulation, behavioural rigidity, and elevated cardiovascular morbidity. The standard Ewing's battery of parasympathetic autonomic function tests provides a reproducible and non-invasive means of assessing such dysfunction. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate cardiovagal tone in newly diagnosed, t

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines are central nervous system depressants that act on GABA-A receptors and enhance the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Prolonged use of benzodiazepines carries a high risk of physiological dependence and abrupt discontinuation following high-dose or long-term benzodiazepine use may precipitate withdrawal. Benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms include autonomic hyperarousal (e.g., tachycardia, hypertension, sweating and tremors), anxiety, insomnia, confusion and rarely psychotic features including delusions and hallucinations. The autonomic nervous system plays a central role in maintaining physiological homeostasis, with the vagus nerve as a crucial component. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive biomarker of vagal tone and autonomic flexibility. A reduced HRV has been associated with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, inflammation and mental health disorders. The present narrative review discusses two promising non-invasive interventions designed to enhance vagal activity: HRV biofeedback (HRV-B) and the safe and sound protocol (SSP). HRV-B utilizes paced breathing at an individual's resonance freque

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are commonly associated with a higher risk of fatal cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Anxiety disorders lead to dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, thus weakening the key neuronal components of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) that are involved in cardiovascular functions, leading to increased cardiovascular risk.
PURPOSE: Impaired ANS activity, as reduced parasympathetic tone is strongly associated with an increased risk of CVD in anxiety disorders. Slow pranayama influences the ANS by activating the parasympathetic tone and deactivati

AIMS: Urbanization is related to non-communicable diseases such as congestive heart failure (CHF). Understanding the influence of diverse living environments on physiological variables such as heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with chronic cardiac disease may contribute to more effective lifestyle advice and telerehabilitation strategies. This study explores how machine learning (ML) models can predict HRV metrics, which measure autonomic nervous system responses to environmental attributes in uncontrolled real-world settings. The goal is to validate whether this approach can ascertain

OBJECTIVES: Sjögren's syndrome (SS) includes many extra-glandular symptoms such as fatigue, pain, sleepiness and depression, which impact on quality of life (QoL). These symptoms also influence each other and could be linked by autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation. Our aim was to model the role of putative predictive variables, including depression in the relationships between ANS function, fatigue, and QoL in SS.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of self-reported data from the multicentre UK primary SS registry. The Composite Autonomic Symptom Scale (COMPASS) was used to assess auton

PURPOSE: While the possible ergogenic benefits of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) make it an attractive training modality, the mechanisms of action remain unclear. Alterations in neural tone have been demonstrated in conjunction with circulatory occlusion, yet investigation of the autonomic nervous system following RIPC treatment has received little attention. We sought to characterize alterations in autonomic balance to both RIPC and augmented RIPC (RIPCaug) performed while cycling, using acute and sustained autonomic indices.
METHODS: Thirteen participants (8M:5F) recorded baseline w

Spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) is an accepted method for assessment of cardiac autonomic function and its relationship to numerous disorders and diseases. Various non-parametric methods for HRV estimation have been developed and extensive literature on their respective properties is available. The RR interval time series can be seen as a series of non-uniformly spaced samples. To analyse the power spectra of this series using the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), we need to interpolate the series for obtaining uniformly spaced intervals. The selection of sampling period play

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is associated with abnormalities in autonomic stress tests, which are tests of cardiovascular response in the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The level of abnormality has been related to the level of overnight arterial oxygen saturation (Sa,O2). We have studied ANS function pre- and post-treatment with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) in six males with moderately severe or severe OSA (apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI) median 51 (range 14-74 events.h-1 of sleep). Tests consisted of heart rate responses to Valsalva manoeuvre, deep breathing, and change
