Factors influencing cervical cancer screening in women infected with HIV: a review of the literature.

The purpose of this article is to review and compare factors that influence cervical cancer screening behavior in HIV-infected women and uninfected women. The research literature revealed that age, ethnicity/race, tobacco use, weight, education, economic issues, and risky behaviors such as substance abuse were factors that influenced cervical cancer screening among all women. HIV viral load and CD4+ T lymphocyte count were serologic factors that affected cervical cancer screening in HIV-infected women. Clinicians can use this information to identify patients at risk for poor Pap test adherence

A normative explanation of antisocial punishment.

While much research shows that people punish free-riders, recent studies find evidence that people also engage in antisocial punishment. That is, they sometimes punish those who contribute generously to collective actions. Such sanctioning is puzzling because generous individuals increase the welfare of all group members. When and why are such individuals punished? In this paper, we propose that descriptive norms are part of the explanation. People may sanction those whose behavior is atypical - even when that behavior benefits the group. We test our theory with a laboratory experiment. We exa

Change in airflow among patients with asthma discussing relationship problems with their partners.

This study examined the covariation of negative emotions with airflow among 48 persons with asthma and their partners as they discussed relationship problems. Measures included self-reported questionnaires, airflow and behavior coded from videotaped discussions. Significantly increased self-reported hostility and statistically but not clinically significant declines in airflow were found post- versus pre-discussion. Self-reported responses to asthma symptoms of more anger and less loneliness predicted lower post-discussion airflow after accounting for pre-discussion airflow. The use of effort-

Ordinary physical punishment: is it harmful? Comment on Gershoff (2002).

E. T. Gershoff (2002) reviewed processes that might mediate and contexts that might moderate the associations between corporal punishment (CP) and child behaviors and provided an account of the methodological weaknesses of the research reviewed in her meta-analyses. In this examination of Gershoff, the authors argue that the biases and confounds in the meta-analyses further limit any causal inferences that can be drawn concerning the detrimental "effects" of CP on associated child behaviors. The authors suggest that undesirable child outcomes are associated with CP because the construct marks

Early externalizing behavior problems: toddlers and preschoolers at risk for later maladjustment.

The early emergence and developmental implications of externalizing behavior problems in toddlers and preschoolers are discussed with an emphasis on which young children are truly at risk for continuing problems. The extant literature is reviewed with a focus on the stability of early externalizing behavior and the diverse pathways that young children, primarily boys, with early-emerging problems may follow. Findings from a number of studies, both epidemiological and high risk, suggest that the small subgroup of boys with multiple risk factors that include especially high levels of early hyper

Drug abuse treatment experience and HIV risk behaviors among active drug injectors in Ohio.

This study compares the sociodemographic characteristics and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk behaviors of injection drug users who had received drug abuse treatment in the previous 5 years and those who had not received treatment. The National AIDS Demonstration Research Program database provided 2001 structured interviews, representing Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton, Ohio. About 43% of the subjects reported having received treatment in the previous 5 years. Length of involvement with drugs, more frequent injection, more legal problems, and higher levels of HIV risk behavi

Autistic behaviors in offspring of mothers abusing alcohol and other drugs: a series of case reports.

Although autistic-like behaviors were described even in the earliest reports of fetal alcohol syndrome, it was only recently that fetal alcohol syndrome and autism were reported as a dual diagnosis in six school-aged children. The purpose of the present series of case reports is to describe marked autistic characteristics in three much younger children (25-36 months) with histories of prenatal exposure to alcohol and other drugs. The behavioral characteristics of these children are described and compared with current diagnostic criteria for autistic disorder. In addition, longitudinal scores o

[Sexuality in old age].

The research on sexual behavior of old people is still suffering from grave deficits. In spite of this it can be said that the biological bases in men and in women are characterized by lower speed and intensity. The old people's attitude towards sexuality in general and their own sexuality is still less liberal than the attitude of younger persons. The frequency of sexual intercourse decreases, mainly because of lack of partners or because of health problems. There are many other forms of sexual behavior; especially, the importance of tenderness is increasing. A theoretical model of factors in

Psychosocial development in a genetic male surgically reassigned as a female at birth.

This paper explores the psychological development of a child who is genetically a boy (Chromosome 46XY). However, because of multiple defects, a decision was made at birth to assign the child the gender status of a girl. Research has shown that the gender-feedback effect resulting from parent-and-infant interaction even at an early age leads to the development of sexual differences in behavior. Based on this conceptual framework, this paper investigates the complex interaction of the forces that shape sexual nature. It examines the process by which this 11-year-old girl is attempting to establ

The etiology and management of rumination and psychogenic vomiting: a review.

Chronic vomiting, in the absence of discernible physical illness, is a problem sometimes seen in individuals labeled as mentally retarded or mentally ill. This behavior often becomes life-threatening, particularly when it occurs in young children. Over the decades several theoretical analyses have been made of this behavior, and a wide range of treatments have been developed. This paper is a summarization of current and historical literature related to three types of chronic vomiting: (1) rumination in the infant; (2) rumination in the older child and adult; and (3) psychogenic vomiting. Atypical Perception of Sounds in Minimally and Low Verbal Children and Adolescents With Autism as Revealed by Behavioral and Neural Measures.

The common display of atypical behavioral responses to sounds by individuals with autism (ASD) suggests that they process sounds differently. Within ASD, individuals who are minimally or low verbal (ASD-MLV) are suspected to have greater auditory processing impairments. However, it is unknown whether atypical auditory behaviors are related to receptive language and/or neural processing of sounds in ASD-MLV. In Experiment 1, we compared the percentage of time 47 ASD-MLV and 36 verbally fluent (ASD-V) participants, aged 5-21, displayed atypical auditory or visual sensory behaviors during the adm

Linking Emotion Dysregulation to Autistic Traits Across Neurodiverse Samples.

Emotion dysregulation (ED) is defined as difficulty regulating emotions in response to activating situations, and subsequent difficulty choosing an environmentally appropriate strategy to modulate one's emotions. Despite ED being identified as a transdiagnostic construct, little research has examined the links to constructs like social communication and interaction (SCI) and restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs). SCIs and RRBs are core components of neurodevelopmental conditions like autism, as well as other mental health conditions more broadly. This article sought to examine the effects

Perinatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances impairs maternal care and induces depressive-like behavior in mice.

Postpartum mental health disorders are a critical yet understudied aspect of maternal health. Exposure to environmental toxicants such as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been associated with adverse health outcomes, including reproductive and neurobehavioral dysfunction, whereas their specific effects on maternal behavior and mental health remain poorly characterized. This study investigated the effects of perinatal exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of a PFAS mixture comprising 10 individual PFAS (PFHxA, PFPeA, PFHpA, PFBA, perfluorooctanoic acid [PFOA], PFOS,

Cognitive control processes in behavior therapy for youth with Tourette's disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive control processes are implicated in the behavioral treatment of Tourette's disorder (TD). However, the influence of these processes on treatment outcomes has received minimal attention. This study examined whether cognitive control processes and/or tic suppression predicted reductions in tic severity and treatment response to behavior therapy. METHOD: Fifty-three youth with TD or a pervasive tic disorder participated in a randomized wait list-controlled trial of behavior therapy. Following a baseline assessment to evaluate psychiatric diagnoses, tic severity, and cogniti

Health Behavior Change and Complementary Medicine Use: National Health Interview Survey 2012.

Background and objectives: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use has been associated with preventive health behaviors. However, the role of CAM use in patients' health behaviors remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the extent to which patients report that CAM use motivates them to make changes to their health behaviors. Materials and Methods: This secondary analysis of 2012 National Health Interview Survey data involved 10,201 CAM users living in the United States who identified up to three CAM therapies most important to their health. Analyses assessed the extent to which

Robot-assisted gait training to reduce pusher behavior: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of 2 weeks of intensive robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) on pusher behavior compared to nonrobotic physiotherapy (nR-PT). METHODS: In a single-blind, randomized, controlled trial with 2 parallel arms, we compared 2 weeks of daily RAGT (intervention group) with the same amount of nR-PT (control group). Patients with subacute stroke who had pusher behavior according to the Scale for Contraversive Pushing (SCP) were included. The primary research questions were whether changes in pusher behavior would differ between groups post intervention, and at a follow

The efficacy of anterior repositioning splints in the management of temporomandibular disc displacement: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of anterior repositioning splint (ARS) compared with other conservative treatments for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc displacement. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane) were searched up to January 8, 2024, so as to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of ARS for the treatment of TMJ disc displacement. RESULTS: This analysis finally included 14 studies. The res

Predicting the Transition From Depression to Suicidal Ideation Using Facebook Data Among Indian-Bangladeshi Individuals: Protocol for a Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide stands as a global public health concern with a pronounced impact, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where it remains largely unnoticed as a significant health concern, leading to delays in diagnosis and intervention. South Asia, in particular, has seen limited development in this area of research, and applying existing models from other regions is challenging due to cost constraints and the region's distinct linguistics and behavior. Social media analysis, notably on platforms such as Facebook (Meta Platforms Inc), offers the potential for detecting major dep

Physiological Indicators and Production Performance of Dairy Cows With Tongue Rolling Stereotyped Behavior.

Non-nutritive oral behaviors, especially tongue rolling, are prevalent in the stabled cow population. These behaviors mean that the environment or management process might not suit the cows, suggesting low welfare. However, few researches have reported the physiological indicators or production performance of dairy cows with the stereotyped behavior. This study aimed to determine physical conditions, daily activity, rumen fermentation, and milk production of cows with tongue-rolling behavior. Three hundred and fifty nine Holstein cows in the same barn and lactation stage were subjected to scan

Martial arts training and aggressive behavior in children and adolescents: a systematic review of longitudinal evidence and psychological processes.

Aggressive behavior in childhood and adolescence represents a persistent developmental and public health concern, with important implications for psychosocial adjustment and long-term wellbeing. Martial arts training, which typically integrates structured physical activity with rule-based interaction, discipline, and social learning, has increasingly been proposed as a potential intervention context for shaping behavioral and emotional development. However, longitudinal evidence regarding its relationship with youth aggression remains fragmented and heterogeneous. This systematic review synthe
