CONTEXT: The purpose of the study was to develop normative ranges and standards for knee and shoulder isokinetic and anthropometric values. These standards can be qualitatively interpreted and allow practitioners to classify isokinetic and anthropometric values more objectively for university-level netball players.
DESIGN: Posttest only observational study design. All players were only evaluated once during the in-season to generate normative ranges.
METHODS: A total of 51 female players volunteered. Participants were evaluated on an isokinetic dynamometer at 60° per second to obtain knee-ex

BACKGROUND: Pubertal growth patterns correlate with future health outcomes. However, the genetic mechanisms mediating growth trajectories remain largely unknown. Here, we modeled longitudinal height growth with Super-Imposition by Translation And Rotation (SITAR) growth curve analysis on ~ 56,000 trans-ancestry samples with repeated height measurements from age 5 years to adulthood. We performed genetic analysis on six phenotypes representing the magnitude, timing, and intensity of the pubertal growth spurt. To investigate the lifelong impact of genetic variants associated with pubertal growth

Patients with skeletal dysplasia, including achondroplasia (ACH) and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), exhibit a variety of short stature, which affect various aspects of their quality of life (QoL). The QoL of adult patients with skeletal dysplasia have been reported; however, research on QoL in children remains limited. The QoL in Short Stature Youth (QoLISSY) is a QoL survey tool developed specifically for short stature children and adolescent. We assessed the QoLISSY scores in children with various skeletal dysplasias presenting with short stature and compared the scores among ACH, OI, and oth

OBJECTIVE: Heterozygous loss-of-function variants in the NPR2 gene cause short stature with nonspecific skeletal abnormalities and account for about 2 ~ 6% of idiopathic short stature. This study aimed to analyze and identify pathogenic variants in the NPR2 gene and explore the therapeutic response to recombinant growth hormone (rhGH).
METHODS: NPR2 was sequenced in three Chinese Han patients with short stature via exome sequencing. In vitro functional experiments, homology modeling and molecular docking analysis of variants were performed to examine putative protein changes and the pathogeni

We investigated the distribution of short stature-associated mutations in Korean pediatric patients with idiopathic short stature (ISS) and isolated growth hormone deficiency (IGHD) via targeted next-generation sequencing (TNGS). We employed a 96-gene TNGS panel for short stature in a total of 144 patients (5-19 years-old) previously diagnosed with ISS or IGHD and identified heterozygous pathogenic or likely pathogenic genetic variants in 14 (10%) patients. Of the mutated genes, PROKR2 (n = 3) is associated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone deficiency or hypopituitarism, while FGFR1 (n = 1)

BACKGROUND: The term "early-onset scoliosis" (EOS) refers to spinal deformities that develop before the age of 10 years. The aim of surgical treatment for EOS is stopping the progression of the curvature, maintaining the correction, ensuring the maximum growth of the vertebrae, and ensuring that the vertebrae remain mobile. Using magnetically controlled growing rods (MCGRs) in the treatment of EOS is intended to protect the patient from the negative effects of repetitive surgeries, increase patient compliance and satisfaction, and increase the speed of return to normal social life. Our aim was

BACKGROUND: Although Risser stages are visible on the same radiograph of the spine, Risser staging is criticized for its insensitivity in estimating the remaining growth potential and its weak correlation with curve progression in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Risser staging is frequently accompanied by other skeletal maturity indices to increase its precision for assessing pubertal growth. However, it remains unknown whether there is any discrepancy between various maturity parameters and the extent of this discrepancy when these indices are used concurrently to assess pubert

On average, Peruvian individuals are among the shortest in the world1. Here we show that Native American ancestry is associated with reduced height in an ethnically diverse group of Peruvian individuals, and identify a population-specific, missense variant in the FBN1 gene (E1297G) that is significantly associated with lower height. Each copy of the minor allele (frequency of 4.7%) reduces height by 2.2 cm (4.4 cm in homozygous individuals). To our knowledge, this is the largest effect size known for a common height-associated variant. FBN1 encodes the extracellular matrix protein fibrillin 1,

OBJECTIVE: There is limited information on the psychosocial impact of growing up with Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS), characterised by slow growth in utero leading to short stature in adulthood. Such information could aid families in making difficult treatment decisions and guide management strategies for health professionals. We aimed to explore the lived experience of people with SRS across the lifespan.
DESIGN/SETTING/PATIENTS: In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted between January 2015 and October 2016 with a sample of 15 adults (six women) with genetically confirmed SRS from
