Post-exercise glycaemic rebound characterises exploratory glucose-lactate response patterns during incremental rowing in elite male rowers: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Blood lactate profiling is widely used to monitor metabolic stress in rowing, but lactate alone may not describe how circulating glucose behaves during and after severe exercise. This exploratory cross-sectional study examined whether paired capillary glucose and lactate kinetics describe distinct response patterns in elite male rowers. METHODS: Twenty-six national-level male open-weight rowers completed a discontinuous incremental rowing-ergometer test in a thermostat-controlled laboratory. The first five stages were 4-min submaximal bouts separated by 1-min passive recovery for

Human-water interactions associated to cercarial emergence pattern and their influences on urinary schistosomiasis transmission in two endemic areas in Mali.

BACKGROUND: Mali is known to be a schistosomiasis-endemic country with a limited supply of clean water. This has forced many communities to rely on open freshwater bodies for many human-water contact (HWC) activities. However, the relationship between contact with these water systems and the level of schistosome infection is currently receiving limited attention. This study assessed human-water interactions including cercarial emergence pattern and their influences on urinary schistosomiasis transmission in two communities in the Kayes district of Mali. METHODS: We carried out a parasitologic

The effects of fetal breathing movements on the utero-fetal-placental circulation.

Important factors which may affect the fetal circulation are the fetal breathing movements (FBMs) and other movements adn the features of fetal circulation. Recent studies have demonstrated that FBMs are a normal phenomenon of intrauterine development and that there are two patterns of FBMs: (1) A predominant pattern of rapid, irregular (in rate and amplitude) episodic movements, with interspersed episodes of apnea that is present more than 50 percent of the time and accounts for more than 90 percent of the breathing activity. Interestingly, periodic sighs are often seen during these FBMs; (2)

Associations between dietary patterns and cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic risk markers in the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol study.

PURPOSE: Cardiovascular-kidney metabolic syndrome (CKM) represents an increasingly prevalent public health concern. Optimal strategies to prevent CKM-related outcomes are greatly needed. We assessed the association between various dietary patterns and CKM biomarkers in a general population study. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from 8066 adult participants of the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) study. Self-reported dietary intake was assessed through the semi-quantitative GA2LEN Food Frequency questionnaire. We derived six established dietary pattern indices, and popu

[18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]FDG PET) Characterizes Neurodegeneration Levels Across the α-Synucleinopathy Continuum.

BACKGROUND: [18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]FDG PET) represents an endorsed neurodegeneration biomarker in neuronal α-synucleinopathies. Idiopathic/isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) represents a prodromal stage of such disorders. OBJECTIVES: To assess [18F]FDG PET as a neurodegeneration biomarker, using published brain metabolic disease-related patterns, and a regional-based approach, across the prodromal to overt α-synucleinopathy continuum. METHODS: We included 83 prodromal subjects with iRBD, comprising non-converters (n = 56) and

A Structured Narrative Review of Contemporary Dietary Strategies Following Acute Coronary Syndromes.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although a Mediterranean-style diet is recommended for secondary prevention following ACS, patients are increasingly interested in alternative dietary approaches. This structured narrative review critically compares the evidence supporting eight dietary patterns for secondary prevention following ACS. METHODS: A structured literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE was performed from database inception through October 2025. Randomized controlled trials evaluating Mediterranean, Dietary Approac

Risk factors and age-specific monthly patterns of primary spontaneous pneumothorax: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) is characterized by sudden lung collapse without external injury or underlying lung disease. However, detailed research on its causes and recurrence patterns is lacking, prompting investigating monthly epidemiology and factors influencing recurrence. Therefore, we aimed to assess the monthly trends in PSP occurrence and identify factors contributing to its recurrence, with a focus on teenagers due to the high incidence rates in this population, while also examining risk factors across other age groups. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retr

Personal factors in systemic sclerosis and their coverage by patient-reported outcome measures. A multicentre European qualitative study and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease where thickening of the skin can lead to reduced body function and limitations in activities. Severe forms can also affect and seriously damage inner organs. Patient-centred rehabilitation emphasises considerations of patients' background, experience and behavior which highlights the need to know if patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) include such personal factors. AIM: To identify and describe personal factors in the experiences of functioning and health of persons with SSc and to examine if and to what extent PROMs in SSc r

Cardiovascular and respiratory responses evoked from the posterior cerebellar cortex and fastigial nucleus in the cat.

1. In both anaesthetized and decerebrate cats the cerebellar cortex (lobules VI, VII, VIII, IX and X) and the fastigial nucleus (f.n.) have been stimulated electrically, and chemically, while recording changes in phrenic nerve discharge, heart rate, arterial blood pressure and renal and femoral blood flow. 2. Stimulation of lobules VI, VII, VIII and Xb failed to elicit any cardiovascular or respiratory changes. Activation of lobule IX (the uvula), and in some preparations sub-lobule Xa, evoked cardiovascular and respiratory responses consistently. In the anaesthetized cat, electrical stimulati

Untargeted Metabolomics Analysis of Human Milk from Breastfeeding Bangladeshi Women Reveals Amino Acid Metabolic Pathways Associated with Maternal Nutritional Status and Infant Growth.

BACKGROUND: Human milk (HM) contains bioactive constituents that continuously change throughout lactation and that are critical for optimal infant development. However, the temporal variation of the HM metabolome, its maternal nutritional determinants, and its links to infant outcomes remain insufficiently characterized in low-middle-income countries (LMIC) where childhood disease burden and HM exposure are substantial, and maternal nutritional status is poor. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to 1) characterize temporal changes in the HM metabolome, 2) quantify maternal nutritional status-related differe

Limb development genes underlie variation in human fingerprint patterns.

Fingerprints are of long-standing practical and cultural interest, but little is known about the mechanisms that underlie their variation. Using genome-wide scans in Han Chinese cohorts, we identified 18 loci associated with fingerprint type across the digits, including a genetic basis for the long-recognized "pattern-block" correlations among the middle three digits. In particular, we identified a variant near EVI1 that alters regulatory activity and established a role for EVI1 in dermatoglyph patterning in mice. Dynamic EVI1 expression during human development supports its role in shaping th

PRDM15 loss of function links NOTCH and WNT/PCP signaling to patterning defects in holoprosencephaly.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a congenital forebrain defect often associated with embryonic lethality and lifelong disabilities. Currently, therapeutic and diagnostic options are limited by lack of knowledge of potential disease-causing mutations. We have identified a new mutation in the PRDM15 gene (C844Y) associated with a syndromic form of HPE in multiple families. We demonstrate that C844Y is a loss-of-function mutation impairing PRDM15 transcriptional activity. Genetic deletion of murine Prdm15 causes anterior/posterior (A/P) patterning defects and recapitulates the brain malformations obser

Automated isochronal late activation mapping to identify deceleration zones: Rationale and methodology of a practical electroanatomic mapping approach for ventricular tachycardia ablation.

Sinus rhythm surrogates for critical isthmus sites are highly desirable because the vast majority of VT is hemodynamically unstable. While many ablation strategies to decrease the arrhythmogenicity of scar have been shown to be effective, the predominant method for electroanatomic mapping relies on a voltage-based depiction of scar and abnormal electrograms. A functional prioritization of slow conduction, distinct from late activation, is feasible in clinical practice with the creation of isochronal late activation maps. Regions of slow conduction are easily visualized with isochronal displays

Lmx1b-targeted cis-regulatory modules involved in limb dorsalization.

Lmx1b is a homeodomain transcription factor responsible for limb dorsalization. Despite striking double-ventral (loss-of-function) and double-dorsal (gain-of-function) limb phenotypes, no direct gene targets in the limb have been confirmed. To determine direct targets, we performed a chromatin immunoprecipitation against Lmx1b in mouse limbs at embryonic day 12.5 followed by next-generation sequencing (ChIP-seq). Nearly 84% (n=617) of the Lmx1b-bound genomic intervals (LBIs) identified overlap with chromatin regulatory marks indicative of potential cis-regulatory modules (PCRMs). In addition,
