Acute and life-threatening complications in patients with anorexia nervosa: A case report and literature study.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by a strong fear of weight gain and body image disorders and is classified as a mental illness that can cause direct damage to one's mental health and body. Many individuals with AN tend to commit suicide. Additionally, the disease can lead to chronic undernutrition and low body weight, adversely affecting each body system, exacerbating systemic medical complications, especially acute life-threatening complications. Therefore, AN has the highest mortality and disability rates among all mental diseases. There is a basic clinical need to identify and addres

Intersections of Racial/Ethnic and Religious Identities on Bodily Well-Being for Black College-Attending Emerging Adults.

Black undergraduates face threats to healthy weight and body image (i.e., bodily well-being). Having a strong racial/ethnic identity can promote health during emerging adulthood. However, less is known about the intersections of racial/ethnic and religious identities on the bodily well-being of Black college-attending emerging adults, despite evidence to indicate that aspects of religiosity are also associated with health. We use quantitative data from 767 Black college-attending emerging adults in the Multi-University Study of Identity and Culture to examine the independent contributions of r

Relationships between serum irisin levels and metabolic parameters in Japanese patients with obesity.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Irisin is a skeletal muscle myokine that causes the brown coloration of white fat, promotes fat burning, inhibits weight gain and may be useful for treatment of obesity. Irisin is also related to glucose/lipid metabolism and may prevent onset of diabetes, but a consensus on irisin secretion has not been reached. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between serum irisin levels and physical factors in untreated Japanese men and women with obesity. METHODS: The subjects were 66 untreated patients with obesity (body mass index ≥30 kg m-2) who visited ou

Postpartum weight change: how much of the weight gained in pregnancy will be lost after delivery?

In a large sample (N = 7116) of women who had two pregnancies within six years, the 50th percentile of weight gain between pregnancies was 2 lb (0.9 kg). Weight gain in pregnancy, week of registration, cigarette smoking, race, percent of ideal body weight, complications of pregnancy, and marital status in the first pregnancy, as well as breast-feeding in the hospital and interval between the two pregnancies, correlated significantly with interpregnancy weight change, and explained 24% of the variance (P less than .0001). Weight gain in the first pregnancy alone explained 21% of the variance in

Psychological interventions for weight management of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a respiratory disorder commonly associated with obesity, and weight management is considered a key therapeutic strategy. However, conventional weight-loss methods often fail due to poor long-term adherence. While psychological interventions may help address behavioral barriers, their effectiveness in managing weight in OSAS patients remains uncertain. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of psychological interventions for weight loss in individuals with OSAS. METHODS: A systematic search (up to April 2025) was cond

Beneficial cardiovascular effects of bariatric surgical and dietary weight loss in obesity.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that, in obese persons without comorbidities, cardiovascular responses to excess weight are reversible during weight loss by either bariatric surgery or diet. BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with cardiac hypertrophy, diastolic dysfunction, and increased aortic stiffness, which are independent predictors of cardiovascular risk. METHODS: Thirty-seven obese (body mass index 40 +/- 8 kg/m(2)) and 20 normal-weight subjects (body mass index 21 +/- 2 kg/m(2)) without identifiable cardiac risk factors underwent cardiac magnetic resonance imaging for the assessment of th

Racial disparities in the association between birth weight in the term infant and blood pressure at age 7 years: results from the collaborative perinatal project.

BP has been inversely associated with birth weight in studies worldwide, but few studies have included black individuals. The US National Collaborative Perinatal Project followed 58,960 pregnant women and their resultant offspring for 7 yr. In this post hoc analysis, all term white or black children without kidney or heart disease were included (n = 29,710). The effect of birth weight and other risk factors on systolic (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) was evaluated at 7 yr. Mean birth weight and body mass index at 7 yr were slightly lower for black compared with white children (birth weight 3.14 +

Gestational weight gain outside the 2009 Institute of Medicine recommendations: novel psychological and behavioural factors associated with inadequate or excess weight gain in a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have noted traditional physical, demographic, and obstetrical predictors of inadequate or excess gestational weight gain, but the roles of psychological and behavioral factors are not well established. Few interventions targeting traditional factors of gestational weight gain have been successful, necessitating exploration of new domains. The objective of this study was to identify novel psychological and behavioral factors, along with physical, demographic, and obstetrical factors, associated with gestational weight gain that is discordant with the 2009 Institute

Absolute and adjusted hand grip strength values in obese patients.

BACKGROUND: Hand grip strength-measured by dynamometry-is an essential tool in nutritional assessment, particularly for detecting sarcopenia, even before weight or muscle mass loss is evident. In individuals with obesity, hand grip strength can help identify muscle weakness that may not be apparent due to high body mass. The purpose of this study is to describe the absolute and adjusted hand grip strength values for weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) in obese patients. It also aims to determine the prevalence of low muscle strength in this group
