Severe loss of mechanical efficiency in COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: There is limited information about the impact of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on the muscular dysfunction, despite the generalized weakness and fatigue that patients report after overcoming the acute phase of the infection. This study aimed to detect impaired muscle efficiency by evaluating delta efficiency (DE) in patients with COVID-19 compared with subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ischaemic heart disease (IHD), and control group (CG). METHODS: A total of 60 participants were assigned to four experimental groups: COVID-19, COPD, IHD, and CG (n = 15 e

Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and immunity in a New York county in 2022 reveals frequent asymptomatic or undiagnosed infections.

Accurate and timely surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 prevalence and immunity is critical to local and national COVID-19 pandemic responses. Representative surveillance surveys reveal more accurate estimates of COVID-19 infection than other measures based on reported test results. Our main research objectives were (i) to provide local health department officials with prevalence estimates calculated from a representative sample to better inform their decision-making efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and (ii) to identify characteristics associated with COVID-19 infections among high-risk gro

Sinus Arrest Associated With a COVID-19 Nasopharyngeal Swab Procedure: A Case Report.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, nasal swabs became a routine test for infection. This non-invasive procedure is typically regarded as benign and rarely associated with complications. However, physical stimulation of the nasopharynx and trigeminal nerve can trigger the trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR), a vagally mediated cardioinhibitory response that can lead to sinus arrest. In this study, a clinical trial participant experienced a 3.4 s episode of sinus arrest which was captured on electrocardiogram telemetry during a routine COVID-19 nasal swab test. Diagnosis of the TCR was based upon the plaus

Myasthenia Gravis Triggered by a COVID-19 Infection: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease that induces skeletal muscle weakness, affecting different muscle groups. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the cause of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), became both a diagnostic and a therapeutic challenge during the pandemic. The effects of COVID-19 are not only limited to the acute symptoms but also to the post-infectious sequelae. We present the case of a 30-year-old Caucasian woman, with no significant medical history, who presented to the emergency room with acute respiratory failure. The patient tested posit

Up-to-date nucleic acid assays for diagnosing respiratory infection.

Nucleic acid assays have been widely used as rapid tests for diagnosing respiratory infections during and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. An ideal point-of-care diagnostic must be affordable, sensitive, specific, user-friendly, rapid/robust, equipment-free and deliverable (ASSURED), and in addition to improvements to conventional methods based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR), point-of-care testing aiming for "REASSURED" are emerging through integration with microfluidic technology. Compared to conventional immunoassays, nucleic acid assays, especially rapid nucleic a

Colorimetric tetra-combo loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay for efficient SARS-CoV-2 detection.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread rapidly and caused a pandemic in 2020. Both pharmaceutical approaches, such as vaccinations and non-pharmaceutical approaches such as social distancing through lockdown and international border restrictions had been implemented to control the outbreak and the transmission of SARS-CoV-2. However, the prolonged implementation of these measures negatively impacted the population and global economy, while the continuously emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants led to breakthrough i

Automated liquid handling robot for rapid lateral flow assay development.

The lateral flow assay (LFA) is one of the most popular technologies on the point-of-care diagnostics market due to its low cost and ease of use, with applications ranging from pregnancy to environmental toxins to infectious disease. While the use of these tests is relatively straightforward, significant development time and effort are required to create tests that are both sensitive and specific. Workflows to guide the LFA development process exist but moving from target selection to an LFA that is ready for field testing can be labor intensive, resource heavy, and time consuming. To reduce t

Performances, feasibility and acceptability of nasopharyngeal swab, saliva and oral-self sampling swab for the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

Molecular diagnosis on nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) is the current standard for COVID-19 diagnosis, but saliva may be an alternative specimen to facilitate access to diagnosis. We compared analytic performances, feasibility and acceptability of NPS, saliva, and oral-self sampling swab for the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). A prospective, multicenter study was conducted in military hospitals in France among adult outpatients attending COVID-19 diagnosis centers or hospitalized patients. For each patient, all samples were obtained and analyzed simultaneo

Failure to Detect Viral RNA in Follicular Fluid Aspirates from a SARS-CoV-2-Positive Woman.

Although there is no known difference between the clinical manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 in pregnant and non-pregnant women based on the studies published until now, in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments were suspended during the pandemic due to uncertainties with the suggestions of associated societies. However, we do not have enough data on the exact effects of SARS-CoV-2 on fertility and pregnancy and whether there are damaging effects on IVF outcome. There is no available evidence about the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 by either sexual way or through intrauterine insemination (IUI) or IVF.

Shared Surgical Decision Making in the Era of COVID-19: Lessons From Hurricane Katrina.

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged every surgical discipline. Lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina have informed our department's management of the current crisis. That experience impressed upon us a profound appreciation for shared decision making in the face of scarce resources, an evolving clinical context, and potential harm to patients and health care workers. To that end, we have formed a Resource Utilization Committee to prospectively review all nonemergent surgical cases during the current crisis. This has allowed "state-of-the-pandemic" otolaryngologic care in a real-time, collabo

[Impaired hemostasis in elderly and senile patients with mesenteric thrombosis in COVID-19.].

In the treatment of coronavirus infections, it is important not only to understand the course of the disease, but also to understand what is happening in the human body, especially in the circulatory system, that is, which disorders lead to deterioration and further complications. Hemostasis disorder in COVID-19 plays an important role in the etiology and clinical manifestations of the disease. The ability to identify factors and risk groups for the development of thrombotic complications, the ability to dynamically interpret peripheral blood parameters and coagulograms, knowledge of diagnosti

Subacute Thyroiditis Following COVID-19: A Case of Diagnostic Challenge in the Absence of Neck Pain.

This case report presents a 77-year-old woman who developed subacute thyroiditis following COVID-19. The patient exhibited atypical symptoms, including fever, fatigue, anorexia, significant weight loss, headaches, and palpitations, without the typical neck pain or tenderness associated with thyroiditis. One week later, a follow-up examination showed mild enlargement and tenderness of the thyroid. Laboratory tests indicated elevated thyroid hormone levels and suppressed thyroid-stimulating hormone. Ultrasonography revealed diffuse thyroid enlargement with poor blood flow, consistent with subacu
