Diagnostic criteria for cancer cachexia: reduced food intake and inflammation predict weight loss and survival in an international, multi-cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated weight loss (WL) associates with increased mortality. International consensus suggests that WL is driven by a variable combination of reduced food intake and/or altered metabolism, the latter often represented by the inflammatory biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP). We aggregated data from Canadian and European research studies to evaluate the associations of reduced food intake and CRP with cancer-associated WL (primary endpoint) and overall survival (OS, secondary endpoint). METHODS: The data set included a total of 12,253 patients at risk for cancer-associated

Early life exposure to phthalates and the development of childhood asthma among Canadian children.

BACKGROUND: Studies have demonstrated an association between phthalate exposure and childhood asthma, although results have been inconsistent. No epidemiological studies have examined exposure during the first year of life. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between phthalate exposures in the home environment during the first year of life, and subsequent development of childhood asthma and related symptoms. METHODS: This study used a case-cohort design including 436 randomly selected children and all additional cases of asthma at 5 years (ntotal = 129) and recurrent wheeze between 2 a

Canadian Rheumatologists' Perspectives on Moderate Psoriatic Arthritis and Oligoarticular Psoriatic Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) substantially impairs quality of life. Clinical trials generally focus on polyarticular PsA, but less is known about the assessment and management of oligoarticular and moderate PsA. An online survey was conducted to determine Canadian rheumatologists' perspectives on the definition and treatment of oligoarticular and moderate PsA. METHODS: Regional and national experts treating patients with PsA were asked to complete an online survey to assess their approach to identifying and managing patients with PsA. Survey questions were developed based on guidance

Falls Occurring After a Spinal Cord Injury: A Scoping Review.

IMPORTANCE: Falls have a considerable physical and psychological impact on people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Occupational therapy practitioners require evidence to support the timely development of occupation-based programs that can be applied to fall prevention in daily life. OBJECTIVE: To determine what is known about falls after SCI, including wheelchair users and people who are ambulatory, and to understand elements of fall prevention to be addressed by occupational therapy practitioners. We applied the Canadian Measure of Occupational Performance and Engagement to understand elements

Comorbidity screening in hidradenitis suppurativa: Evidence-based recommendations from the US and Canadian Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundations.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is associated with comorbidities that contribute to poor health, impaired life quality, and mortality risk. OBJECTIVE: To provide evidence-based screening recommendations for comorbidities linked to HS. METHODS: Systematic reviews were performed to summarize evidence on the prevalence and incidence of 30 comorbidities in patients with HS relative to the general population. The screening recommendation for each comorbidity was informed by the consistency and quality of existing studies, disease prevalence, and magnitude of association, as well as bene

An Examination of Comorbid Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Chronic Pain on Substance Misuse in a Canadian Population-Based Survey.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic pain and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are co-occurring, and both conditions are independently associated with substance misuse. However, limited research has examined the impact of comorbid GAD and chronic pain on substance misuse. The aim of this article was to examine the associations between comorbid GAD and chronic pain conditions compared to GAD only with nonmedical opioid use, drug abuse/dependence, and alcohol abuse/dependence in a Canadian, population-based sample. METHODS: Data came from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health (N = 25,113). M

Seizure detection devices: A survey of needs and preferences of patients and caregivers.

AIMS: Seizure detectors could have many positive effects on the quality of life of people with epilepsy (PWE) such as alarms to reduce seizure-related injuries or reliable seizure counts leading to improved epilepsy management. As seizure detection gains increasing interest within the epilepsy research community, guidelines for patient-centered designs are needed. This study aims to detail the preferences, needs and concerns regarding potential seizure detectors, of PWE and their caregivers across Canada. METHODS: Two questionnaires were designed to survey PWE and their caregivers on seizure

Bayesian Hierarchical Modelling of Individual Expert Assessments in the Development of a General-Population Job-Exposure Matrix.

The CANJEM job-exposure matrix compiles expert evaluations of 31 673 jobs from four population-based case-control studies conducted in Montreal. For each job, experts had derived indices of intensity, frequency, and probability of exposure to 258 agents. CANJEM summarizes the exposures assigned to jobs into cells defined by occupation/industry, agent, and period. Some cells may, however, be less populated than others, resulting in uncertain estimates. We developed a modelling framework to refine the estimates of sparse cells by drawing on information available in adjacent cells. Bayesian hiera

Advanced 2D image processing technique to predict hip fracture risk in an older population based on single DXA scans.

UNLABELLED: A new technique to enhance hip fracture risk prediction in older adults was presented and assessed. The new method dramatically improved prediction at high specificity levels using only a standard clinical diagnostic scan. This has the potential to be implemented in clinical practice to enhance patient fragility diagnosis. INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis of osteoporosis is based on the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. However, studies have shown this to be insufficient to accurately predict hip fractures. Therefore, complementar

Mothers' experiences of breastfeeding a child with tongue-tie.

Tongue-tie is characterized by an abnormally tight, short and thick lingual frenulum restricting the tongue's movement. This functional impairment can hinder a child's ability to maintain an effective latch and suckle and may lead to complex breastfeeding difficulties. The primary aim of this study was to explore the experiences of mothers who have breastfed a child with tongue-tie, including their experiences with the health care system. A qualitative description study design was used. Two semistructured focus groups were conducted in February 2016 with a total of nine participants in the lar

Interoperability in incident command.

Galvanised by the increasing complexity in managing incidents of mass violence and mass casualty, the emergency response agencies in Calgary, Canada identified the need to develop research-based policies, establish common strategies/ tactics and conduct more joint training across all hazards. By identifying the challenges with initial command, coordination and control activities at scene, the Calgary first-responder community designed and implemented an integrated training programme to support interoperability between front-line incident commanders and supervisors. The training programme was c
