The extent of similarity between E. faecium strains found in healthy feedlot beef cattle and those causing extraintestinal infections in humans is not yet fully understood. This study used whole-genome sequencing to analyse the antimicrobial resistance profile of E. faecium isolated from beef cattle (n = 59) at a single feedlot and compared them to previously reported Australian isolates obtained from pig (n = 60) and meat chicken caecal samples (n = 8), as well as human sepsis cases (n = 302). The E. faecium isolated from beef cattle and other food animal sources neither carried vanA/vanB res

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is the etiological agent of enzootic bovine leukosis. However, the propagation and distribution of BLV after primary infection still need to be fully elucidated. Here, we experimentally infected seven cattle with BLV and analyzed the BLV proviral load (PVL) in the blood and various organs. BLV was first detected in the blood of the cattle after one week, and the blood PVL increased for three weeks after infection. The PVL was maintained at a high level in five cattle, while it decreased to a low or medium level in two cattle. BLV was distributed in various organs, s

Cumulus cells of ovulated cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) express Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), pathogen recognition receptors, to recognize and react to sperm signals during fertilization. Sperm also express TLR2, but its contribution to the sperm-oocytes crosstalk is still unclear. Here, we adapted the in vitro fertilization (IVF) model to characterize the potential relevance of sperm TLR2 in sperm-oocytes interactions during fertilization in bovine. The IVF results showed that the ligation of sperm TLR2 with its specific antagonist/agonist resulted in down/up-regulation of the cleavage and b

Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) involves multiple pathogens, shows diverse lung lesions, and is a major concern in calves. Pathogens from 160 lung samples of dead cattle from 81 cattle farms in Northeast China from 2016 to 2021 were collected to characterize the molecular epidemiology and risk factors of BRDC and to assess the major pathogens involved in bovine suppurative or caseous necrotizing pneumonia. The BRDC was diagnosed by autopsy, pathogen isolation, PCR, or reverse transcription-PCR detection, and gene sequencing. More than 18 species of pathogens, including 491 strains of

Tick-borne diseases including East Coast fever, anaplasmosis and babesiosis constitute a major constraint to improving livestock production worldwide, including Tanzania. Determination of the prevalence and factors associated with the occurrence of pathogens in cattle is important for informed decision making on the control and prevention of these diseases. However, little is known about the epidemiology of these pathogens in cattle in some regions of Tanzania. Therefore, this study aimed at establishing the prevalence of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina, Babesia bovis and Theileria parva

BACKGROUND: Several hypotheses have been proposed for explaining the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated mucormycosis in India, including the burning of cattle dung cakes, though no study has yet been conducted to support this claim.
METHODS: We conducted an aero-mycological study to evaluate whether Mucorales in the air increased during or after burning cattle dung cakes. We further compared the growth of Mucorales in the indoor air samples from houses with and without cattle. We also cultured fresh and dried cattle dung and soil samples for Mucorales.
RESULTS: We not

Animal African Trypanosomiasis (AAT) remains an animal health problem in sub-Saharan Africa and in Cameroon in particular. Despite more than 40 years of fighting against AAT in some tsetse infested areas, the disease prevalence is still a concern. Improving the control strategies in different settings requires to understand the current epidemiological situation of AAT. The aim of the present study was to update our knowledge on the diversity of tsetse fauna and trypanosome species in the tsetse infested area of Faro and Deo division, Adamawa region, Cameroon. Tsetse flies were caught using Vav

Brucellosis is an abortigenic and zoonotic disease. In cattle, it is mainly caused by Brucella abortus. The disease is endemic in low- and middle-income countries, being considered a neglected zoonotic disease. In these countries, it is of high importance to develop and validate sensitive, specific and low-cost diagnostic assays for brucellosis. The aim of the present study was the development of an indirect enzyme-linked immune assay (iELISA) to detect anti-B. abortus antibodies in milk samples. We purified the lipopolysaccharide antigen from B. abortus and produced an anti-bovine IgG monoclo

Psoroptic mange is a common disease of livestock, caused by Psoroptes ovis. Compared to Holstein-Friesian (HF) cattle, the Belgian Blue (BB) cattle breed is highly susceptible to the infestation. However, the mechanism for this difference is still unclear. To determine the factors responsible for this breed susceptibility, the immune response to P. ovis was studied in experimentally infested BB and HF cattle, using clinical signs, histology, immunohistochemical profiling and gene expression analysis of skin biopsies. The mite numbers and lesion area of BB cattle were greater than in HF during

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) causes a severe infection in ruminant animals. Here we present an in-depth transcriptional analysis of soft-palate tissue from cattle experimentally infected with FMDV. The differentially expressed genes from two Indian cattle (Bos indicus) breeds (Malnad Gidda and Hallikar) and Holstein Friesian (HF) crossbred calves, highlighted the activation of metabolic processes, mitochondrial functions and significant enrichment of innate antiviral immune response pathways in the indigenous calves. The results of RT-qPCR based validation of 12 genes was in alignment w

The interactions of host, vector and parasite in bovine trypanosomiasis transmission cycles in southwest Nigeria are not yet well understood. Trypanosoma (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae) species infection prevalences and bloodmeal sources were determined in transmitting vectors of the genera Glossina (Diptera: Glossinidae), Tabanus (Diptera: Tabanidae) and Stomoxys (Diptera: Muscidae) collected using Nzi traps in cattle settlements in southwest Nigeria. Sequenced cytochrome B mitochondrial DNA segments obtained from vector digestive tracts identified bloodmeal sources from eight host specie

Prediction of parturition is essential for sustainable production in beef and dairy cattle, yet the present methods are limited by their high invasiveness and low utility. Here we compared prepartum changes in ventral tail base surface temperature (ST) with changes in vaginal temperature (VT) and behavioral indices. We analyzed 22 parturitions from 22 beef cows. Changes in daily values of ST, VT, and behavioral indices over the 7 days before parturition were investigated. Hourly values were calculated as the actual values minus the mean values for the same hour over a 3-day period, and the cha

Enterobacteriaceae producing β-lactamases have spread rapidly worldwide and pose a serious threat to human-animal-environment interface. In this study, we present the presence of Salmonella enterica (1.3%) and commensal Escherichia coli (96.3%) isolated from 400 environmental fecal dairy cattle samples over 20 farms in Uganda. Among E. coli isolates, 21% were resistant to at least one antimicrobial tested and 7% exhibited multidrug resistance. Four E. coli isolates displayed extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing genes, including blaCTX-M-15 (n = 2/4), blaCTX-M-27 (n = 1/4), blaSHV-

Fasciola hepatica infection causes important economic losses in livestock and food industries around the world. In the Republic of Ireland F. hepatica infection has an 76% prevalence in cattle. Due to the increase of anti-helminthic resistance, a vaccine-based approach to control of Fasciolosis is urgently needed. A recombinant version of the cysteine protease cathepsin L1 (rmFhCL1) from F. hepatica has been a vaccine candidate for many years. We have found that vaccination of cattle with this immunodominant antigen has provided protection against infection in some experimental trials, but not

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is endemic in Niger, with outbreaks occurring every year. Recently, there was an increasing interest from veterinary authorities to implement preventive and control measures against FMD. However, for an efficient control, improving the current knowledge on the disease dynamics and factors related to FMD occurrence is a prerequisite. The objective of this study was therefore to obtain insights into the incidence and the spatio-temporal patterns of transmission of FMD outbreaks in Niger based on the retrospective analysis of 9-year outbreak data. A regression tree an

A number of reproductive biotechnologies are currently available to multiply offspring from high genetic merit animals to enhance reproductive efficiency and profitability both in dairy and beef herds. Some of these technologies such as fixed time artificial insemination (FTAI), when correctly implemented, generally allow greater reproductive performance than natural breeding. Besides the use of frozen-thawed semen during artificial insemination, cattle recipients can also be synchronized to receive embryos (produced in vivo or in vitro) at set dates with fertility results that usually outperf

In Zambia, anthrax outbreaks among cattle are reported on nearly an annual basis. Presently, there is a lack of serological assays and information to develop an anthrax management and control strategy. In this study, an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based on recombinant protective antigen domain 1 (rPA-D1) of Bacillus anthracis was developed and used to detect anti-PA antibodies in cattle in Zambia. An antigen coating of 10 ng/well and a serum dilution of 1:100 were determined to be the optimal rPA-D1 ELISA titration conditions. The intra- and inter-assay % coefficients of

Cattle lymph nodes can harbor Salmonella and potentially contaminate beef products. We have developed and validated a new real-time PCR (qPCR) assay for the detection and quantification of Salmonella enterica in cattle lymph nodes. The assay targets both the invA and pagC genes, the most conserved molecular targets in Salmonella enterica. An 18S rRNA gene assay that amplifies from cattle and other animal species was also included as an internal control. Available DNA sequences for invA, pagC and 18S rRNA genes were used for primer and probe selections. Three Salmonella serotypes, S. Typhimuriu
