Sensory behaviors in marine organisms.

Marine environments are vast, dynamic, and complex, posing significant challenges for the release and perception of sensory information that differ significantly from their terrestrial counterparts. Despite increasing interest, our knowledge about sensory behaviors in marine organisms remains relatively narrow. Recent advances in marine sensory biology have started to investigate how animals adapt to the specific constraints of aquatic environments to gather and respond appropriately to sensory information, ensuring their survival. New information about sensory organs, their underlying neurona

Characterization of induced pluripotent stem cell lines from patients of African American ancestry.

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are a valuable platform for studying human biology and developing patient-specific cellular models. However, individuals of African American ancestry remain underrepresented in existing iPSC repositories, limiting the diversity of available research resources. To address this gap, we generated and characterized two iPSC lines derived from healthy donors of African American ancestry. Both lines exhibited normal morphology, expression of pluripotency markers, trilineage differentiation potential, stable karyotypes, and absence of mycoplasma contamination. S

Chromatin and epigenetic regulation in malignant tumors: A comprehensive review.

Epigenetics and chromatin biology have been two distinct research fields for many years. There is a close relationship between epigenetics and chromatin biochemistry, and the dynamic changes of chromatin serve as an important basis for epigenetic regulation. The relationship between epigenetics and chromatin is reflected in the dynamic changes and structural adjustments of chromatin. In this article, we focus on previously underappreciated chromatin remodeling proteins. This review summarizes the biological significance of chromatin remodeling complexes in malignancies, including the physiolog

Recent advances in albinism.

Although it has been described for a long time, albinism remains poorly understood in many aspects. The clinical presentation is very different between subtypes of the disease and even within a single subtype. The monogenic nature of the disease is increasingly questioned. What are the functions of the proteins encoded by the genes involved in the disease and what are the pathophysiological consequences of their alteration? What is the link between defective melanogenesis and dysfunction of the neural retina? This review relates to the most recent advances in the field of albinism. As it is no

Generation of Viral Particles with Brain Cell-Specific Tropism by Pseudotyping HIV-1 with the Zika Virus E Protein.

Flaviviruses are a family of RNA viruses that includes many known pathogens, such as Zika virus (ZIKV), West Nile virus (WNV), dengue virus (DENV), and yellow fever virus (YFV). A pseudotype is an artificial virus particle created in vitro by incorporating the flavivirus envelope proteins into the structure of, for example, a retrovirus such as human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1). They can be a useful tool in virology for understanding the biology of flaviviruses, evaluating immune responses, developing antiviral strategies but can also be used as vectors for gene transfer experiments.

Failures in Protein Clearance Partly Underlie Late Onset Neurodegenerative Diseases and Link Pathology to Genetic Risk.

As we identify the loci involved in late onset neurodegenerative disease, we are finding that the majority of them are involved in damage response processes. In this short review, I propose that it is partly a failure in these damage response processes which underlie late onset disease and that the resultant pathology is a marker of the type of damage response which has failed: microglial clearance of damaged neuronal membranes in Alzheimer's disease (AD), ubiquitin proteasome clearance in the tauopathies, and lysosomal clearance in Parkinson's disease (PD). In this review, I outline this rela

Fluorescent phosphorus dendrimers excited by two photons: synthesis, two-photon absorption properties and biological uses.

Different types of two-photon absorbing (TPA) fluorophores have been synthesized and specifically functionalized to be incorporated in the structure of phosphorus dendrimers (highly branched macromolecules). The TPA fluorophores were included in the periphery as terminal functions, in the core, or in the branches of the dendrimer structures, respectively. Also the functionalization in two compartments (core and surface, or branches and surface) was achieved. The consequences of the location of the fluorophores on the fluorescence and TPA properties have been studied. Several of these TPA fluor

Lipidomics in vascular health: current perspectives.

Identifying the mechanisms that convert a healthy vascular wall to an atherosclerotic wall is of major importance since the consequences may lead to a shortened lifespan. Classical risk factors (age, smoking, obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and dyslipidemia) may result in the progression of atherosclerotic lesions by processes including inflammation and lipid accumulation. Thus, the evaluation of blood lipids and the full lipid complement produced by cells, organisms, or tissues (lipidomics) is an issue of importance. In this review, we shall describe the recent progress in vascular

In vivo monitoring of distributional transport kinetics and extravasation of quantum dots in living rat liver.

Although the unique optical properties of surface-modified quantum dots (QDs) have attracted wide interest in molecular biology and bioengineering, there are very few reports of their in vivo biodistribution, due to a lack of analytical techniques for characterizing the dynamic variation of QDs in living animals. In this study, we used an in vivo online monitoring system and a batch-wise elemental analytical method to investigate the biodistribution/extravasation of various surface-modified CdTeSe/ZnS (QDs) in rat liver. It is found that the surface modification dictated not only the blood ret

Pyocyanin effects on respiratory epithelium: relevance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa airway infections.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) uses several virulence factors to establish chronic respiratory infections in bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. One of its toxins, pyocyanin (PYO), is a redox-active pigment that is required for full virulence in animal models and has been detected in patients' airway secretions. PYO promotes virulence by interfering with several cellular functions in host cells including electron transport, cellular respiration, energy metabolism, gene expression, and innate immune mechanisms. This review summarizes recent adv

[Electromagnetic lipolysis and semicircular lipoatrophy of the thighs].

INTRODUCTION: The semicircular lipoatrophy of the thighs is a disorder whose incidence remained rare for years. Only recently, an "epidemic" situation emerged, affecting hundreds of subjects who shared a status of administrative employee. OBSERVATION: The older etiopathogenic hypotheses give way to a newer one implying the electromagnetic fields generated by computers and their wirings. The resulting modifications in the intrinsic bioelectrical properties of the skin could influence the biology of macrophages exhibiting lipophagic activity in the hypodermis. The electroactivation of these cel

[Nasal allergy and asthma: one or two diseases?].

Epidemiological studies have shown that rhinitis and asthma are associated. At least four out of five asthmatics suffer from rhinitis and one out of four rhinitic subjects develop asthma. Recent progress in cellular and molecular biology confirms that the same inflammatory cells and similar mechanisms participate in the pathophysiology of the two diseases. Histological findings show that although nasal inflammation resembles bronchial inflammation, specific remodelling features that are present in asthma are lacking in rhinitis. This may be due to the different embryologic origin of the two or

Problem based learning as a curricular strategy for medical undergraduates: a tutor's experience.

This article focuses on the experiences and role of a tutor while conducting a problem based learning (PBL) exercise to facilitate the learning of biochemistry and molecular biology. A case presentation of sickle cell anemia was used to frame a module. The objective of this experimental exercise was to assess the suitability and effectiveness of problem based learning in the first year of undergraduate medical course and to practice self-assessment by tutors in this new role of a facilitator of learning through small group discussion. A tutor during such a learning session encouraged the stude

[Calcitonin cancers: definition, history, various forms].

Calcitonin secreting tumors, as their name indicates, share a common denominator; yet, their clinical, morphological and biochemical features are polymorphous. Medullary thyroid carcinoma is a well-known disease, with sporadic and familial forms, associated or not with type II multiendocrinopathy; not only calcitonin and carcinoembryonic antigen, its reliable markers, but also multiple other hormones may be secreted. Atypical forms, more or less undifferentiated, even heterogenous may also exist: the presence of the hormone in tumoral cells allows their recognition. Moreover, ectopic calcitoni

Viral gene replication enhances AAV vector quality and reduces manufacturing costs.

Viral vectors for gene and cell therapy are typically produced by transfecting plasmids into mammalian cells. Because plasmid DNA is not replicated in these cells, large quantities are required to express sufficient viral proteins for vector packaging, contributing significantly to manufacturing costs and plasmid-derived contaminants. Here, we harness the DNA replication machinery of human adenovirus to efficiently amplify plasmid DNA within HEK293 cells for adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector production. This approach enables vector manufacturing with 10- to 20-fold less plasmid encoding AAV

Osteoimmune senescence in aging-related bone diseases.

Aging-related bone diseases are increasingly recognized as disorders in which uncoupled bone remodeling remains central but is substantially modified by immune-skeletal interactions. This review consolidates current evidence for osteoimmune senescence, a framework that links senescent skeletal cells, aging immune compartments, chronic SASP signaling, impaired immune clearance, and marrow-niche deterioration to reduced bone strength and repair. Osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis-associated erosion, osteoarthritis, periodontal bone loss, and delayed fracture healing are clinically distinct disea

Skin Deep: Uncovering the Early Events of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus at the Tick-Host-Virus Interface.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is transmitted predominantly through the bite of infected Hyalomma ticks, yet the earliest events at the vector-host-virus interface in human skin remain largely undefined. This review synthesizes current knowledge of human cutaneous structure and immunity, tick feeding biology, and salivary immunomodulation to propose how local skin responses may shape systemic outcomes of CCHFV disease. We detail the roles and permissiveness of major skin-resident and infiltrating cell types, including keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhans cells, dermal dendriti

Tumor necrosis factor from leukemic environment stimulates hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells toward megakaryocyte/myeloid lineage bias.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is characterized by the proliferation of malignant myeloid progenitor cells and impairment of hematopoiesis. Although genetic abnormalities within leukemic cells have been investigated in detail, definitive explanations for the damage to the normal hematopoietic system are lacking. Here, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the impairment of the residual hematopoietic system in the bone marrow in AML. We evaluated the function of residual nonleukemic (nl)-hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) from the bone marrow of mice with MLL-AF9-induced AML. The nl-

The Dynamics of Nerve Degeneration and Regeneration in a Healthy Milieu and in Diabetes.

Appropriate animal models, mimicking conditions of both health and disease, are needed to understand not only the biology and the physiology of neurons and other cells under normal conditions but also under stress conditions, like nerve injuries and neuropathy. In such conditions, understanding how genes and different factors are activated through the well-orchestrated programs in neurons and other related cells is crucial. Knowledge about key players associated with nerve regeneration intended for axonal outgrowth, migration of Schwann cells with respect to suitable substrates, invasion of ma
