Does two-dimensional vs. three-dimensional surgical simulation produce better surgical outcomes among patients with class III facial asymmetry?

The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of traditional two-dimensional planning (2DP) and three-dimensional surgical simulation (3DS) in the surgical correction of skeletal class III with facial asymmetry. This retrospective cohort study included 37 consecutive adult Taiwanese patients. Preoperative and postoperative three-dimensional cephalometric measurements were obtained from cone beam computed tomography scans. The outcome variables were the differences in preoperative and postoperative linear and angular measurements and the differences between the two groups after surgery. Whe

Outcomes of endoscopic suturectomy with postoperative helmet therapy in bilateral coronal craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE Historically, bilateral frontoorbital advancement (FOA) has been the keystone for treatment of turribrachycephaly caused by bilateral coronal synostosis. Early endoscopic suturectomy has become a popular technique for treatment of single-suture synostosis, with acceptable results and minimal perioperative morbidity. Boston Children's Hospital has adopted this method of treating early-presenting cases of bilateral coronal synostosis. METHODS A retrospective review of patients with bilateral coronal craniosynostosis who were treated with endoscopic suturectomy between 2005 and 2012 was

Mapping the Mandibular Lingula in Pierre Robin Sequence: A Guide to the Inverted-L Osteotomy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The inverted-L osteotomy for mandibular distraction in Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is a useful technique for avoiding injury to the tooth root and inferior alveolar nerve. Identification of the lingula is understudied and may decrease iatrogenic complications. This study aims to map the position of the lingula in the micrognathic mandible and compare the location of the lingula in relative normal mandible. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of symptomatic PRS patients. Three-dimensional CT scans were reviewed and the relative lingula position described. RES

Absence of multiple premolars and ankylosis of deciduous molar with cant of the occlusal plane treated using skeletal anchorage.

Ankylosis and the absence of premolars are two relatively common conditions encountered in the field of orthodontics. However, the absence of multiple premolars, particularly two adjacent premolars, along with ankylosis of deciduous teeth, is unusual. Herein, we present a case report and discuss some aspects related to these abnormalities. A 15-year-old boy was missing the upper right first and second premolars and the lower right and left second premolars. In addition, the deciduous lower left second molar was ankylosed and in infraocclusion, causing canting of the occlusal plane. The patient

Accuracy and reliability of linear measurements using 3-dimensional computed tomographic imaging software for Le Fort I Osteotomy.

Our purpose was to compare the accuracy and reliability of linear measurements for Le Fort I osteotomy using volume rendering software. We studied 11 dried skulls and used cone-beam computed tomography (CT) to generate 3-dimensional images. Linear measurements were based on craniometric anatomical landmarks that were predefined as specifically used for Le Fort I osteotomy, and identified twice each by 2 radiologists, independently, using Dolphin imaging version 11.5.04.35. A third examiner then made physical measurements using digital calipers. There was a significant difference between Dolphi

Maxillary distraction osteogenesis in cleft lip and palate cases with midface hypoplasia using rigid external distractor: an alternative technique.

BACKGROUND: Patients with operated cleft lip and palate present with a problem of midface hypoplasia, and such patients have been traditionally treated with orthognathic surgery. Such a procedure has its own limitations of relapse and hence a newer modality of distraction osteogenesis with histiogenesis can be chosen to overcome such limitations for midfacial advancement. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an alternative technique and its postoperative stability in maxillary distraction osteogenesis in patients of cleft lip and cleft palate using a rigid external device (RED). METHOD: N

Frontal brain expansion during development using MRI and endocasts: relation to microcephaly and Homo floresiensis.

A major hall of hominid brain evolution is an expansion of the frontal lobes. To determine if a similar trajectory occurs during modern human development, the MRI scans of 118 living infants, children, and adolescents were reviewed and three specific measurements obtained: frontal width (FW), maximal cerebral width (MW), and maximal cerebral length (ML). The infantile brain is uniformly wide but relatively short, with near equal FW and MW. The juvenile brain exhibits a wider MW than FW, while FW of the adolescent brain expands to nearly equal MW, concurrent with an increase in ML. The preferen
