Triangles of abuse: a model of maltreatment.

Research and clinical evidence support the view that the perpetrator (P), victim (V), and observer (O), all contribute to child abuse and neglect. This paper describes a model in which they have a necessary part in precipitating and sustaining the maltreatment. It appears they form a triangle or triquetra which rotates with time and circumstance. The perpetrator of sexual assault often becomes the victim when he is imprisoned. The victim of physical abuse may become the perpetrator of physical abuse in the next generation. Within each P, V, and O there is also a triquetra which rotates and whi

Learning disorders as a school health problem. Neurological and psychiatric aspects.

Broadened concepts of intellectual functions have shown that many varieties of mental subnormality may be preventable or subject to improvement with proper treatment. Many types of neurologic dysfunction are accompanied by learning disorders based on specific intellectual deficits.A more refined delineation of the higher cerebral functions of each child with a learning disorder provides the basis for improved specific remedial educational techniques. Such detailed assessment of higher functions of the nervous system can be greatly enhanced by the appropriate special evaluations carried out by

The Relationship Between Maternal Personality Functioning and Caregiving Quality.

Previous studies have shown that mothers with categorically defined personality pathology experience substantial difficulties in parenting, but research using Level of Personality Functioning (LPF) is notably lacking. This study explored relationships between maternal LPF and behavioral (Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale), attitudinal (Parenting Sense of Competence scale), and representational (Caregiving Helplessness Questionnaire) measures of caregiving in a sample of 170 mothers. We also investigated whether LPF incrementally explains caregiving over anxiety and depression, the

Involving Parents in the Management and Treatment of Youth Anxiety.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Childhood anxiety disorders are impairing and chronic unless addressed early. While cognitive behavioral therapy with exposures has a strong evidence base, many youth continue to experience symptoms posttreatment. Enlisting parents may help improve the management and treatment of childhood anxiety. RECENT FINDINGS: Parental factors that influence childhood anxiety include family accommodation, parental emotion socialization, parental overcontrol, and parental anxiety. The merits of involving parents in childhood anxiety treatment have been debated. However, when specific, e

Reprint: Sibling sexual abuse: A commentary based on seven studies, seven insights.

Sibling sexual abuse (SSA) is a complex and underexplored issue with profound impacts on individuals, families, and communities. Current research, although developing, is insufficient and fails to capture the many layers and core aspects of SSA. This commentary highlights insights from seven qualitative studies conducted by the author between 2013 and 2020, based on interviews and focus groups with siblings, parents, and professionals. The findings reveal the need for stronger research-practice relationships, an understanding of the subjective experiences of abuse from child and adult survivor

Development of eating skills in infants and toddlers from a neuropediatric perspective.

Early infant feeding and swallowing are complex motor processes involving numerous muscles in coordination, e.g. the orofacial muscles as well as the muscles of the pharynx, larynx and esophagus. The newborn's reflexive drinking develops into the ability to ingest pureed complementary food as infancy progresses. Finally, in the last part of the first year of life, a differentiated eating, chewing and swallowing process develops allowing the voluntary intake of different foods of the family diet. The dietary schedule for the first year of life, which describes the recommended nutrition of infan

Nonintimate Polyvictimization and the Severity of Intimate Partner Violence Experienced by Men.

There is a dearth of research on the relation of men's cumulative experiences of nonintimate victimization (polyvictimization) to their victimization in intimate relationships. This study examines the association between nonintimate polyvictimization (including being abused as a child, cyberbullied, stalked, physically assaulted, and experiencing property crime) and the severity of intimate partner violence victimization in men. The sample of 8,784 men in current married/common-law relationships was drawn from a random sample of the 2014 Canadian General Social Survey. About 3% of the men (an

Intention to Engage in Maternal and Child Health Home Visiting.

Home visiting (HV) programs have the potential to improve maternal and child health. As federal and state initiatives expand the reach of these programs, understanding what factors enhance uptake and retention of the services becomes increasingly important. This qualitative study used a Reasoned Action Model (RAM) and a cultural lens to explore factors influencing the engagement of women with low-income in HV programs. We conducted 21 semi-structured interviews in both English and Spanish in a prenatal clinic in an urban public health department. The constructs most salient for participants we

Interventions to Address the Needs of Adults With Postconcussion Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

Postconcussion syndrome (PCS) affects physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning. Existing reviews of interventions to address PCS are limited to psychological and rehabilitation interventions and to child and adolescent populations. We conducted a systematic review integrating current evidence about interventions for adults with PCS. The inclusion criteria were intervention studies of adults (ages ≥18 yr) with PCS that evaluated recovery from PCS symptoms and focused on functional outcomes; 10 studies met the criteria. Included studies demonstrated medium to high levels of evidence and in

Betrayal Trauma in Youth and Negative Communication During a Stressful Task.

Attachment-based theories and related research illustrate that emotion regulation develops in the context of a secure relationship between a child and caregiver. When a secure bond is broken, such as in the context of betrayal trauma, children fail to develop necessary emotion regulation skills which can lead to an array of relational problems. The current study examined the relations between betrayal trauma history, type of communication during a stressful interpersonal laboratory task, and emotion regulation difficulties in a sample of trauma-exposed adolescents. Results showed that adolesce

Gene-environment correlations in the cross-generational transmission of parenting: Grandparenting moderates the effect of child 5-HTTLPR genotype on mothers' parenting.

Evidence suggests that parenting is associated cross-generationally and that children's genes may elicit specific parenting styles (evocative gene-environment correlation). This study examined whether the effect of children's genotype, specifically 5-HTTLPR, on mothers' parenting behaviors was moderated by her own parenting experiences from her mother. Two independent samples of three-year-olds (N = 476 and 405) were genotyped for the serotonin transporter gene, and observational measures of parenting were collected. Mothers completed measures of the parenting they received as children. The ch

Interactive Effect of Child Maltreatment and Substance Use on Depressed Mood Among Adolescents Presenting to Community-Based Substance Use Treatment.

Adolescents referred to community behavioral health centers (CBHC) for substance use (SU) problems report high rates of child maltreatment. Although SU and maltreatment are independent risk factors for adolescent depression, few studies have examined their interactive effects. This study examined the interactive effects of SU (alcohol and marijuana) and exposure to different types of trauma on depressed mood among 74 adolescents referred to a CBHC for SU. Hierarchical regressions controlling for sex and common adolescent comorbidities showed that sexual abuse had a stronger relationship with d

Evaluation of children with selective mutism and social phobia: a comparison of psychological and psychophysiological arousal.

Although children with social phobia (SP) and selective mutism (SM) present similarly in a clinical setting, it remains unclear whether children with SM are unable to speak due to overwhelming anxiety, or whether withholding speech functions as an avoidance mechanism. A total of 35 children (ages 5-12 years) with either SM (n = 10), SP (n = 11), or no diagnosis (n = 14) participated in the current study. Measurements included clinician, child, and parent ratings as well as behavioral observations and psychophysiological measures. Independent evaluators and clinicians rated children with SM as
