Genetic counselling issues and male infertility.

In the past few years, the major genetic causes of male infertility have been elucidated and many of these can now be treated using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This has raised a number of wider issues in the families of people with this type of infertility. Coupled with the essential need for individual (or family) confidentiality, this type of treatment demands a very careful and sensitive counselling approach. The main requirement is for fertility and genetic teams to collaborate to provide a person-oriented approach to the application of two very complex and intimidating techno

Retinoblastoma in association with the chromosome breakage syndromes Fanconi's anaemia and Bloom's syndrome: clinical and cytogenetic findings.

Two children presenting with sporadic unilateral retinoblastoma and exhibiting a high degree of chromosome breakage were noted to have unusual facies, microcephaly and abnormal skin pigmentation. In the first child the pattern of both spontaneous and mitomycin-C-induced chromosome breakage was characteristic of Fanconi's anaemia although the degree of breakage was extreme. She also exhibited a striking increase in X-ray-induced chromosomal damage in G0 lymphocytes as measured by dicentric formation and increase in chromatid-type aberrations. She had a number of typical clinical features, inclu

[Neuropsychiatric approach to a child with spinal muscular atrophy. A study of relational problems].

Various years' experience of an extensive series of children suffering from progressive chronic spinal muscular atrophy have made it possible to elaborate a neuropsychiatric approach model conducted on the basis of a viewpoint capable of integrating the clinico-medical aspect and aptitude to empathic listening aimed at establishing a therapeutic alliance with the patient. With advancing age and the course of the disease, in most cases very different difficulties and problems are encountered. These change continuously in relation to the stage reached in emotional development. Entry to school an

Associations between Snacking and Weight Status among Adolescents 12-19 Years in the United States.

Snacking is a significant contributor to energy intake among adolescents, but its association with weight status is unclear. To elucidate this association, data from 6545 adolescents (12-19 years) in the 2005-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analyzed. The mean number of daily snack occasions, mean snack size, and mean snack energy density were examined by weight classification (body mass index (BMI)-for-age percentiles: normal weight (NW) <85th; overweight (OW) ≥85th to <95th; obese (OB) ≥95th). Models included all snacking parameters, mean meal size, demogra

The Way Forward for Mechanism-Based Therapeutics in Genetically Defined Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Rare genetically defined neurodevelopmental disorders with increased risk of autism have recently become an entry point for autism-related drug discovery. Through exploration of downstream effects of the pathological mutations, specific mechanistic pathways have been identified as dysregulated. The identification of shared mechanisms across forms of autism opens the door for the development of novel "mechanism-based therapeutics." However, confidence in the therapeutic mechanism does not diminish the need for well-designed clinical trials.

22q13.2q13.32 genomic regions associated with severity of speech delay, developmental delay, and physical features in Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

PURPOSE: Phelan-McDermid syndrome is a developmental disability syndrome with varying deletions of 22q13 and varying clinical severity. We tested the hypothesis that, in addition to loss of the telomeric gene SHANK3, specific genomic regions within 22q13 are associated with important clinical features. METHODS: We used a customized oligo array comparative genomic hybridization of 22q12.3-terminus to obtain deletion breakpoints in a cohort of 70 patients with terminal 22q13 deletions. We used association and receiver operating characteristic statistical methods in a novel manner and also incor

[Intergenerational evolution of stature in Pernambuco State, Brazil (1945-2006): 2 - analytical aspects].

This study used multivariate regression models to identify factors associated with the height trend in residents of Pernambuco State, Brazil, in 2006, born from 1945 onward. The data were from two population-based statewide surveys. In the final model for each age bracket, year of birth, gender, schooling, and residence in urban areas were positively associated with stature in adults, as well as in children and adolescents 5 to 19 years of age. In children under five years, in addition to these variables, birth weight and prenatal care were also positively associated, while diarrhea in the two

Absence of harmful effects of magnetic resonance exposure at 1.5 T in utero during the third trimester of pregnancy: a follow-up study.

In this study the possible adverse effects of in utero exposure to magnetic resonance (MR) conditions at 1.5 Tesla were examined. Thirty-five children between 1 and 3 years of age, and nine children between 8 and 9 years of age, that were exposed to MR during the third trimester of pregnancy, were checked for possible adverse effects in a follow-up study. Data on pregnancy and birth, the results of a neurological examination at 3 months, their medical documentary with emphasis on eye and ear functioning, and a questionnaire answered by their mothers were collected and evaluated. Falling in line: Children's gender conformity after feedback signaling gender atypicality.

Gender conformity powerfully shapes children's development, yet little experimental work has investigated the antecedents of this conformity. Here, we experimentally tested whether and how threats to children's felt gender typicality-the extent to which they feel typical of their gender group-elicit conformity and whether these effects vary by age and gender. We randomly assigned 147 children ages 5-10 years (70 girls; 79 racial/ethnic minority) to receive feedback suggesting their performance was gender-atypical (threat) or gender-typical (affirmation) on a pair of "gender knowledge games." How Preschoolers Defend: Early Preschoolers Act More, Intend Less, and Strategically Defend Friends.

Although prior research has linked social distance to defending in school-aged children and adolescents, it remains unclear whether this effect extends to preschool-aged children, generalizes to both defending behaviors and intentions, or demonstrates heterogeneity in this younger population. This study addressed these gaps by focusing on preschoolers, distinguishing between defending behaviors and intentions, and examining how social distance (friend vs. stranger) and age (early vs. late preschoolers) influence defending (direct and indirect defending), both independently and interactively. Conversational Latency in Autistic Children With Heterogeneous Spoken Language Abilities.

PURPOSE: Conversational latency entails the temporal feature of turn-taking, which is understudied in autistic children. The current study investigated the influences of child-based and parental factors on conversational latency in autistic children with heterogeneous spoken language abilities. METHOD: Participants were 46 autistic children aged 4-7 years. We remotely collected 15-min naturalistic language samples in the context of parent-child interactions to characterize both child and parent conversational latency. Conversational latency was operationally defined as the time it took for on

Early-life threat and deprivation: Are children similarly affected by exposure to each?

Extensive evidence documents negative consequences of adversity for children's development. Here, we extend such work by looking beyond average effects to consider variation in susceptibility to both threat and deprivation in terms of cognitive and social-emotional development, using an influence-statistic methodology. Data come from the ongoing Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N = 14,541, 49.1% female, age range: 6 month to 12 year, race and ethnicity: 97.8% white, 0.4% black, and 0.6% other). The Impact of Parental Migraine on Children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review surveys our current understanding of the impact of parental migraine on children. Understanding the impact of migraine on others in a family unit is critical to describing the full burden of migraine and to developing psychosocial supportive interventions for patients and their families. RECENT FINDINGS: Having a parent with migraine is associated with several early developmental features including infant colic. Adolescent children of parents with migraine self-report their parent's migraine interferes with school and activities and events. Further, migraine is

An Experimental Investigation of Antisocial Lie-Telling Among Children With Disruptive Behavior Disorders and Typically Developing Children.

Children's lie-telling is surprisingly understudied among children with significant behavioral problems. In the present study, experimental paradigms were used to examine antisocial lie-telling among ethnically diverse 5- to 10-year-old children with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD; n = 71) and a typically developing (TD) comparison sample (n = 50) recruited from a southeastern state from 2013 to 2014. Children completed two games that measured the prevalence and skill of their lies: (a) for personal gain and (b) to conceal wrongdoing. Children with DBD were more likely to lie for personal

Annual research review: re-thinking the classification of autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: The nosology of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is at a critical point in history as the field seeks to better define dimensions of social-communication deficits and restricted/repetitive behaviors on an individual level for both clinical and neurobiological purposes. These different dimensions also suggest an increasing need for quantitative measures that accurately map their differences, independent of developmental factors such as age, language level and IQ. METHOD: Psychometric measures, clinical observation as well as genetic, neurobiological and physiological research from t

Social neuroscience of child and adolescent depression.

The social neuroscience of child and adolescent depression is inherently multidisciplinary. Depressive disorders beginning early in life can have serious developmental and functional consequences. Psychopathology research has described depression's defining clinical and contextual features, and intervention research has characterized its response to treatment and prevention programs. Neuroendocrine, electrophysiological, and neuroimaging studies have identified core neurobiological aspects of early-onset mood disorders. These areas are reviewed using a developmental social neuroscience perspec
