BACKGROUND: Pakistan faces high maternal and child mortality rates, with semi-urban and rural areas particularly affected. Community-based initiatives that emphasize local participation can address these challenges by fostering community ownership and sustainability. This study evaluated a community-based education (CBE) module, developed through a university-community partnership, in improving maternal and child health indicators in a semi-urban locality.
METHODS: The study was conducted in four phases in Lahore, Pakistan: Phase one included a pre-assessment survey to identify health needs a

BACKGROUND: Social media became a key communication channel for public health agencies during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for reaching younger populations less engaged with traditional channels. However, official social media health communication often fails to appeal to young people. Improving public health agency use of social media for health communication is vital to ensure health messages reach this priority population effectively, especially during public health emergencies.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to co-design a social media communication framework for health messaging to you

BACKGROUND: Certain groups are commonly under-served by health research due to exclusionary models of research design/delivery. Working in partnership with under-served groups is key to improving inclusion. This project aimed to explore the use of a knowledge mobilisation approach to start building partnerships with under-served groups based on trust and mutual understanding.
METHODS: This co-produced public involvement project employed a knowledge mobilisation approach. The project team involved public contributors from four community organisations and staff from two Universities. A series o

BACKGROUND: Individuals experiencing homelessness face unique physical and mental health challenges, increased morbidity, and premature mortality. COVID -19 creates a significant heightened risk for those living in congregate sheltering spaces. In March 2020, the COVID-19 Community Response Team formed at Women's College Hospital, to support Toronto shelters and congregate living sites to manage and prevent outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 using a collaborative model of onsite mobile testing and infection prevention. From this, the Women's College COVID-19 vaccine program emerged, where 14 shelters wer

BACKGROUND: Involvement of adolescent girls in biomedical HIV research is essential to better understand efficacy and safety of new prevention interventions in this key population at high risk of HIV infection. However, there are many ethical issues to consider prior to engaging them in pivotal biomedical research. In Uganda, 16-17-year-old adolescents can access sexual and reproductive health services including for HIV or other sexually transmitted infections, contraception, and antenatal care without parental consent. In contrast, participation in HIV prevention research involving investigat

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence to guide implementation of recommended collaborative palliative care (PC) models for hospitalized patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We sought to characterize palliative needs and identify barriers to PC delivery to inform inpatient collaborative care models.
METHODS: We conducted a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study of hospitalized adults with COPD and physicians (hospitalists and pulmonologists) at two urban teaching hospitals in the United States. Patients rated their palliative needs in a survey, followed by a semi-str

INTRODUCTION: Mothers raising children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may experience substantial emotional distress and caregiving burden, whilst family support andaccess to services can shape how these demands are managed. Yet in-depthqualitative evidence on these public mental health dimensions remains limited inSaudi Arabia. This study explored mothers' experiences of raising a child diagnosedwith ASD.
METHODS: Using a qualitative descriptive design informed by a contextualistposition, the study recruited ten mothers through a specialist autism centre inMadinah and the surrounding com

Osteoporosis is a chronic, progressive bone condition that impacts over 200 million people globally, with fragility fractures significantly burdening healthcare systems and diminishing patient quality of life. Exercise is universally recommended as a foundational non-pharmacological intervention for osteoporosis management; however, a persistent translational gap separates the efficacy demonstrated in controlled trials from the outcomes observed in real-world clinical practice. This narrative review identifies and critically examines the multifaceted challenges confronting the evidence-based a

INTRODUCTION: Cryptorchidism is associated with an increased lifetime risk of testicular malignancy. Although orchiopexy reduces this risk and facilitates examination, postpubertal vigilance remains important. We assessed adherence to monthly testicular self-examination (TSE) among adolescents and young men who underwent childhood orchiopexy.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study with a cross-sectional telephone questionnaire component. Patients who underwent orchiopexy for cryptorchidism at a tertiary children's hospital between 2010 and 2020 and were at least 13 years old at th

Decision aids are tools that can reduce decisional conflict and enhance patient satisfaction in the decision-making process. However, tool heterogeneity and clinical barriers, such as physician time constraints, hinder their implementation. This study introduces an individualized patient decision aid, developed within the European I3LUNG project, to support shared decision-making (SDM) in non-small cell lung cancer. The present decision aid is a dynamic, online tool structured into five sections (overview, prognosis/treatments, comprehension quizzes, patient preferences, and support/FAQs) desi

Breast cancer risk prediction tools are increasingly used in clinical practice to guide early detection, prevention, and shared decision-making. Unlike population-level screening, personalised risk estimates incorporate individual factors (family history, genetics, lifestyle, breast density), providing tailored assessments. These tools show promise for improving patient engagement and targeted prevention, but require effective implementation to ensure they enhance rather than complicate care. This review explores healthcare professionals' experiences with providing personalised breast cancer r

PURPOSE: Clinical care for patients who report substantial hearing difficulties despite having little or no hearing loss is a topic of great debate within and beyond audiology. Building on our previous retrospective review of veterans evaluated for auditory processing disorders across the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the current work presents five such case studies. The goal is to work toward improved patient care by providing a more in-depth view highlighting both strengths and weaknesses of approaches to care for veterans whose hearing difficulties are not explained by hearing loss.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most lethal malignancies, largely due to late diagnosis, marked tumor heterogeneity, and profound resistance to therapy. Beyond recurrent alterations in protein-coding genes, growing evidence identifies non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) as key regulators of pancreatic cancer biology and promising tools for clinical translation, particularly in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). ncRNAs, including microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), and emerging short RNA species such as small nucleolar RNAs, PIWI-interacting RNAs, and tRNA-deriv

INTRODUCTION: Autistic individuals referred for medical imaging examinations may face barriers without appropriate adjustments. Strengthening the relationship between patients and the healthcare system is crucial, as positive patient experiences can improve adherence and future engagement with healthcare services. This study explored Australian radiographers' experiences and perceptions of imaging autistic patients. Terminology preferences among autistic individuals vary across countries, communities and individuals. This paper adopts identity-first language, 'autistic person' or 'autistic pat
