BACKGROUND: Rape of women and children is recognized as a health and human rights issue in Tanzania and internationally. Exploration of the prevailing perceptions in rural areas is needed in order to expand the understanding of sexual violence in the diversity of Tanzania's contexts. The aim of this study therefore was to explore and understand perceptions of rape of women and children at the community level in a rural district in Tanzania with the added objective of exploring those perceptions that may contribute to perpetuating and/or hindering the disclosure of rape incidences.

OBJECTIVE: Communication skills are crucial for high-risk behavior screening and counseling. Practicing physicians have limited opportunities to improve these skills. This paper assesses the impact of a continuing medical education (CME) program for Student Health Center clinicians that targeted communication skills, screening practices and patient satisfaction.
METHODS: Program evaluation included pre- and post-objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE's), chart review, and provider and patient satisfaction surveys. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and ranked sum tests.

BACKGROUND: Haitian immigrants, among the fastest growing immigrant communities in the United States, have low cancer screening rates. Several patient barriers have been identified and associated with low screening rates but little is known on provider barriers for cancer screening. To address this gap, we assessed the cancer screening practices, attitudes, and beliefs of primary care providers serving the Haitian community.
METHODS: We surveyed a random sample of physicians serving first generation Haitian immigrants in New York City, identified through their zip codes of practice. Participa

BACKGROUND: Cancer mortality rates among American Indians (AIs) in the Northern Plains are among the highest in the nation. Reasons for this disparity are unclear but are probably due to multiple barriers. AIs appear to experience more intense side effects from therapeutic radiation compared with other populations. This differential response to treatment, a disparity in itself, might be overcome if the molecular reasons were better understood.
METHODS: The National Cancer Institute developed the Cancer Disparity Research Partnership to address these inequities. This initiative, known as the W

BACKGROUND: Four elementary (primary) school students with severe speech and physical impairments (SSPI) who used augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) aids were selected to take part in an intensive, 4-week summer intervention program. The program was designed to explore effective approaches, content and contexts for supporting communication (including oral language, literacy, and technology skills) among young people who require AAC.
METHOD: Features of the intervention included (i) using an integrated approach to provide language and literacy opportunities intended to elicit the

The study provides descriptive data on a large, diverse sample of dually diagnosed patients from an urban psychiatric inpatient setting, utilizing a comprehensive array of clinical, social and community functioning measures. The intent is to provide more useful and reliable information, particularly concerning African-Americans with a dual diagnosis in the public sector. Over a one year period, all persons admitted to a public psychiatric hospital with a DSM-III-R psychiatric diagnosis and a positive screen for substance abuse problems using clinical and structured measures (n = 486) were inte

BACKGROUND: People are encouraged to respond swiftly to digital health invitations, but they can be (rightly) skeptical about their legitimacy.
OBJECTIVE: Drawing on digital communication theory and psychological science, we hypothesized that easy-to-read web links that facilitate participants' ability to identify the health organization as the website host would improve trust in and user engagement with digital communications.
METHODS: In 3 double-blind, randomized online experiments, adult UK residents were recruited via the online platform Prolific (experiment 1: N1=569) or Qualtrics (exp

Presbyacusis, the auditory disorder which accompanies the aging process, is well known. However, the practical assistance available to alleviate the breakdown in the communication ability of the older person is unsatisfactory, and provision for public awareness of a rehabilitation strategy has not yet been established in many countries. Four hundred and ninety-eight elderly subjects, aged 65-94 years, were hearing tested in different setups, a geriatric nursing home and in the community. It was found that the need for rehabilitation was high and the willingness to participate in a hearing scre

BACKGROUND: Emerging adults (EAs; age 18-30 years) with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have more challenges with diabetes management and glycemic control than other age groups. Living in a rural community introduces additional unique diabetes care challenges due to limited access to specialty care and ancillary support services. Yet, few interventions have been developed to improve diabetes management in rural-dwelling EAs with T1D.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand the diabetes management experiences of older adolescents and EAs (age 16-25 years) with T1D living in a rural area and to assess

In an experimental vignette study performed with 92 Portuguese women, we analyzed the relations between exposure to hostile sexism (HS) and benevolent sexism (BS) in a workplace context, system justification (SJ), and anxiety, measured after participants were exposed to an HS, a BS, or a neutral communication about the context of the industry they would have worked in, if selected. The results indicated that both HS and BS fostered participants' anxiety, and that SJ moderated the relation between HS and anxiety. Anxiety was highest among participants low in SJ. Main contributions of the study,

Despite increased use of behavioral analogues to identify casual mechanisms of self-injurious behavior (e.g., suicide attempts; non-suicidal self-injury), little is known about the impact on participants. The current study examined the impact of a specific behavior analogue, Self-Aggressive Paradigm (SAP), on participant affect. Community participants (n = 507) reported several affective ratings before and after completing SAP task procedures. Following the SAP, participants reported reductions in nervousness and fear and increases in calmness and anger (d = .21). Participants with a current a

BACKGROUND: Religious leaders (RLs) form an influential group in Eswatini. This study explores their understanding and acceptance of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), with a view to improve PrEP service delivery for those who would benefit from PrEP the most.
METHODS: We conducted online and in-person in-depth interviews with (n=26) purposefully selected RLs (n=12 female and n=14 male) from Eswatini. Data were managed using NVivo V.12 and coded inductively. We used thematic analysis to analyse our data and structure our findings across the individual, interpersonal, community and institutional

CONTEXT: Communication is critical to improving patient and family outcomes, yet clinicians remain undertrained. Effective communication training takes significant investments in personnel and programming. Little is known about what motivates and sustains clinician educators in such programs.
OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study aimed to learn more about 1) what motivates clinician communication skills educators (CSEs) to improve their own communication and educate others and 2) what sustains them in this work.
METHODS: PedsTalk is a communication training program based on the VitalTalk model

UNLABELLED: While several studies have explored the barriers to accessing community pharmacies for individuals with physical, hearing, visual, and learning disabilities, most have focused on the perspectives of disabled individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the barriers faced by community pharmacists when serving individuals with physical, visual, and hearing disabilities in Saudi Arabia, with the goal of recommending ways to enhance future healthcare provisions.
METHODS: A mixed-methods cross-sectional phenomenological study was conducted among community pharmacists in Saudi Ar

CONTEXT: Despite the lifesaving benefits of organ and tissue donation, a worldwide shortage of suitable and registered donors exists. Although the reasons for this shortage are multifactorial, it has been recognized that distinct barriers to registration, family discussion, and consent that require targeted intervention and action are present among minority cultural, religious, and immigrant communities.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of 3 orthodox religious communities in Australia (Macedonian, Greek, and Serbian Orthodox) and determine the implications for engag

The COVID pandemic disrupted healthcare systems worldwide, affecting medical care delivery, including transplant centers. As sites of tertiary healthcare delivery, living kidney donations were particularly impacted, with delays, communication challenges, and an increased burden on potential donors. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of individuals navigating the predonation evaluation (PDE) during the pandemic. Through 25 semistructured interviews, the participants shared insights into delays in care, inconsistent communication, pandemic-related emotions, and unexpected faci

This qualitative study explored how Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) responded to anti-Asian racism during COVID-19. Participants (n = 459; Mage = 26.4 years; 77.8% female) completed a survey and responded to the open-ended question: "How have you responded to anti-Asian racism since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic?" Reflective thematic analysis was utilized to code responses. Three themes were identified, indicating that AANHPIs engaged in knowledge sharing and cultural exploration; experienced emotional reactions that galvanized efforts to take care o

INTRODUCTION: Community-acquired pneumonia has high mortality and is associated with significant healthcare costs. In older adults with community-acquired pneumonia neutrophil dysfunction has been identified and is associated with poor outcomes for patients. Immunometabolism is a rapidly developing field which links immune cell function to metabolism. This study aims to explore neutrophil metabolism in community-acquired pneumonia.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Pneumonia Metabolism in Ageing study is a prospective observational study recruiting older adults hospitalised with community-acquired pneumo

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States (U.S.) and the leading cause of cancer related death among U.S. Hispanics/Latinas (H/Ls). H/Ls have lower rates of screening and longer time to follow up after an abnormal mammogram. We developed a comprehensive community health educator (promotores)-led education and risk identification program for Spanish-speaking H/Ls in California to increase mammography screening, genetic testing, and the understanding of the impact of family history on cancer risk. Due to COVID-19, we adapted the program to a virtual platform. The expe
