Knowledge, Beliefs, and Experiences With Mental Health Services and Help-Seeking in People With Aphasia and Care Partners.

PURPOSE: Supporting psychological well-being in persons with aphasia (PWA) can improve social and health outcomes; however, PWA and their care partners (CPs) are often not receiving mental health support. Previous research explores this from the perspective of health care professionals. AIMS: The aim of this study was to examine knowledge, beliefs, and experiences related to mental health services directly from PWA and CPs. METHOD: The study included 11 PWA and 11 CPs. Participants completed a guided survey (virtual) with opportunities for elaboration related to the knowledge, beliefs, and e

Participant and group facilitator perspectives on a novel culturally tailored diabetes self-management program for African Americans.

BACKGROUND: African Americans with type 2 diabetes experience disparities in their care and diabetes health-related outcomes. Diabetes self-management programs such as Healthy Living with Diabetes (HLWD) are important but do not account for the unique cultural experiences of African Americans. Also, a culturally tailored program focused on addressing sociocultural beliefs and providing race-congruent peer support, Peers LEAD (Peers Supporting Health Literacy, Self-Efficacy, Self-Advocacy, and Adherence) was implemented in two midwestern cities to improve medication adherence but does not inclu

Hepatitis C elimination: amplifying the role of primary care nurses in Australia.

Background Australia's commitment to eliminate hepatitis C by 2030 is underpinned by the mobilisation of the primary care sector. Primary care nurses are well placed to contribute to achieving elimination given their unique access to people with/at risk of hepatitis C and their person-centred approach to care delivery. This study examines the enablers to primary care nurse involvement in elimination efforts. Methods Primary care nurses involved in the care of people with/at risk of hepatitis C were recruited through two national nursing organisations. Participants provided verbal consent to pa

Trend and enhanced surveillance of Monkeypox during COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

Monkeypox (MPX) is a viral zoonosis with lesions like smallpox. Though rare in Nigeria, sporadic outbreaks have been reported in 17 states since September 2017. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has further reduced surveillance and reporting of MPX disease. This study seeks to assess the effect of an enhanced surveillance approach to detect MPX cases and measure the cumulative incidence of MPX in priority states in Nigeria. We identified three priority states (Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa) and their Local Government Areas (LGAs) based on previous disease incidence. We also identified, trained,

Healthy Native Youth: Improving Access to Effective, Culturally-Relevant Sexual Health Curricula.

Tribal health educators across the United States have found it challenging to locate engaging, culturally-relevant sexual health curricula for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth. Healthy Native Youth is a new online resource that provides a "one-stop-shop" for tribal health advocates to access age-appropriate curricula. The site was designed by a team of advisers representing a diverse group of tribal communities, using a collaborative planning process. The website content and navigation was then refined through usability testing with the target audience. The portal allows users t

Economic approaches to improving access to evidence-based and recovery-oriented services for people with severe mental illness.

During the past 3 decades, research has identified several psychosocial evidence-based practices (EBPs) for people with severe mental illness (SMI). Starting from a different origin, the recovery movement has influenced perceptions of how EBPs and other services should be delivered, and also emphasized the value of peer supports. We now know much more than 30 years ago about the kinds of services that help people with SMI live satisfying lives in the community. Evidence-based and recovery-oriented services require additional resources but use them sparingly: they are highly individualized, oft

Wildfire Evacuation Lessons From La Ronge, a Northern Saskatchewan Site: Physician Debriefings.

The 2025 La Ronge wildfire evacuation highlights vulnerabilities in rural health system readiness during climate-driven emergencies. Reflections from 12 family physicians revealed challenges in communication redundancy, clarity of emergency governance, continuity of care for evacuated patients and the emotional strain of dual responder-evacuee roles. These insights, gathered through a post-evacuation debrief, represent physicians' perspectives rather than assessments of organizational performance. The findings echo lessons from previous Canadian wildfires and inform policy directions to streng

A Scoping Review of Challenges in Adult Intimate Relationships After Childhood Sexual Abuse.

Childhood sexual abuse is a severe problem worldwide. Childhood sexual abuse can be detrimental to children and their abilities to cope with and communicate in their subsequent adult intimate relationships. The aim of this review was to generate and summarize knowledge about how childhood sexual abuse manifests in adult intimate relationships so healthcare professionals can incorporate this knowledge into treatment and care. A scoping review methodology was selected because it supports examination of the extent, range, and nature of research activity. A content analysis of the studies included

Trematodes indicate animal biodiversity in the Chilean intertidal and Lake Tanganyika.

Trematode communities in populations of estuarine snails can reflect surrounding animal diversity, abundance, and trophic interactions. We know less about the potential for trematodes to serve as bioindicators in other habitats. Here, we reanalyze data from 2 published studies concerning trematodes, 1 in the Chilean rocky intertidal zone and the other from the East African rift lake, Lake Tanganyika. Our analyses indicate that trematodes are more common in protected areas and that in both habitats they are directly and positively related to surrounding host abundance. This further supports the

Self-injury and self-mutilation. Nursing approaches.

Self-injury/self-mutilation behaviors often are associated with organic conditions, such as mental retardation, encephalitis, Lesch-Nyhan disease, de Lange syndrome, Tourette's syndrome, acute intoxication, Addison's disease, and various behavioral and personality disorders. Among the many reasons why individuals resort to self-injury/self-mutilation are to reduce tension, the communication of intense or depressive emotions, dissociative experiences, or to gain control of earlier traumatic experiences through reenactment. The treatment of clients who engage in self-injury/self-mutilation must

Leveraging partnerships to address substance use among American Indian and Alaska Native populations: A commentary on research within the NIDA Clinical Trials Network.

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities experience a disproportionate burden of substance use disorders (SUDs) alongside persistent barriers to culturally responsive care and research participation. Despite this need, AI/AN populations remain underrepresented in substance use research, in part due to historical and ongoing systemic inequities, including research practices that have not adequately respected Tribal sovereignty or incorporated Indigenous knowledge systems. This commentary synthesizes research conducted within the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Tria

Differences in Patient and Parent Preferences for Prognostic Communication Across Disease Milestones in Advanced Childhood Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Navigating prognostic communication is challenging for clinicians caring for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with poor-prognosis cancer. Presently, little is known about how AYA and parent preferences for prognostic disclosure evolve over time. This study explored communication preferences at key illness milestones of disease progression to inform individualized, person-centered approaches to optimize prognostic disclosure. PROCEDURE: Sixty-five participants, including 25 AYAs aged 12-25 years and 40 parents, were recruited at distinct illness timepoints-diagnosis, relapse/pro

Understanding the Why: Patient, Parent, and Oncologist Perspectives on Prognostic Communication Preferences in Advanced Childhood Cancer.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: High-quality prognostic communication in pediatric oncology is essential to support informed decision making, foster trust, and honor goals of care. While families differ in their preferences for how prognosis is discussed, clinicians often rely on assumptions rather than directly eliciting these preferences, risking misalignment and distress. To address this gap, we aimed to characterize patient, parent, and oncologist perspectives on key variables, experiences, and circumstances that influence their preferences for prognostic communication. METHODS: Semi-structured in

Improving Communication Competencies in Neonatology: A Multimodal Simulation-Based Palliative Care Workshop.

BackgroundEffective communication between providers and parents is fundamental in critical care provision. Particularly when discussing goals of care and delivering bad news, which is often complicated by differing values and beliefs. Many trainees lack formal education in communication skills for end-of-life care. Implementing a formal curriculum may improve physician-patient relationships, parents' mental health, and overall patient care.ObjectiveTo assess the impact of an integrative multimodal simulation-based palliative care workshop experience combining simulated complex medical cases wi
