Current Applications and Emerging Horizons of Artificial Intelligence in Temporal Bone Computed Tomography.

The temporal bone has intricate anatomy. CT examinations can clearly depict fine anatomical structures and subtle lesions, providing indispensable imaging evidence for diagnosing otologic diseases and planning surgical procedures. However, image interpretation has several inherent limitations, including subjectivity, substantial interobserver variability, and heavy reliance on physician experience, all of which can compromise clinical decision-making and lead to inconsistent patient management. In recent years, AI-driven approaches have made significant progress in this field, particularly in

Dialogic communication and audience engagement in Hispanic health marketing on X: A computational analysis.

This study investigated the overarching themes and dialogic features of the three national-level Hispanic health organizations (i.e., NHMA, NAHH, NHHF). The focus is on how these health organizations utilize social media for Hispanic health and how the themes and dialogic features are associated with public engagement on social media. To achieve this, the study employed structural topic modeling on 18,430 X posts from 2018 to 2023 and negative binomial regression to predict user amplification engagement (e.g., liking, sharing). The study identified four broad thematic areas: health equity and

Integrated computation-guided thermostabilization of the fungal sweet protein Honey Truffle Sweetener.

Thermostability limits the use of sweet proteins as sugar substitutes in thermally processed foods. Here, we report an integrated computation-guided workflow for thermostabilizing Honey Truffle Sweetener (HTS), a recently identified fungal sweet protein with low intrinsic stability. We determined the HTS crystal structure and used it to guide subsequent computational analyses. Rosetta and ThermoMPNN evaluated candidate substitutions from complementary physics-based and deep-learning-based perspectives, and the selected single-mutant library was experimentally characterized. The resulting melti

Computational analysis of pathogenic nsSNPs in the human TNF gene and their role in neuroinflammation in Adrenoleukodystrophy.

Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is an X-linked neurodegenerative disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the ABCD1 gene and characterized by progressive demyelination and neuroinflammatory responses. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is an important mediator of inflammatory signaling and has been implicated in the neuroinflammatory environment associated with ALD. However, the structural and functional consequences of genetic variations within TNF remain insufficiently understood. The study focuses to find high-risk non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) in the TNF gene and the

Lung function change and quantitative computed tomography measurements are associated with prospective frailty.

BACKGROUND: Frailty, a state of reduced physiologic reserve, is associated with comorbid lung disease. Its relationship with lung function change over time and with lung computed tomography (CT) measurements is less clear. METHODS: COPDGene, a multicentre cohort study, enrolled adults aged 45-80 years with a smoking history of a minimum of 10 pack-years. This study included participants with normal baseline 6-min walk distance (6MWD), spirometry at all three site visits and frailty assessment. The primary exposures were baseline quantitative CT measurements (airway wall thickening (Pi10), log

Tuning antibiotic adsorption via aromatic functionalization of chitosan monomers: a computational study.

This work describes the application of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations to unveil how the association propensity of the antibiotics tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CPX), levofloxacin (LVX), and cephalexin (CLX) in different protonation states varies with the increasing aromaticity and hydrophobicity of the adsorbent species. It is shown that the increasing aromaticity of the chitosan substituent enhances the adsorption of all antibiotics. Both TC and CLX appear to adsorb better under low and neutral pH conditions than in alkaline media. Con

Quantifying the impact of a computer-aided diagnostic score on the clinical diagnosis of functional seizures.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of functional/dissociative seizures (FDS) without ictal video-electroencephalography is challenging. The Functional/Dissociative Seizures Likelihood Score (FSLS) is a machine learning-based diagnostic score that aims to help clinicians identify FDS. We evaluated whether a human-in-the-loop implementation of the FSLS improved the performance of clinicians identifying FDS as compared to epileptic seizures (ES). METHODS: We constructed 117 anonymized cases about patients with ictal video-electroencephalography-documented FDS, epilepsy, co-occurring ES and FDS, or physiol

Diffractive Optical Neural Networks: Pathways Toward Intelligent and Scalable Photonic Computing.

Optical neural networks have witnessed remarkable progress in recent years, driven by the demand for parallel, high efficiency, and ultrafast information processing. Among various optical neural network architectures, diffractive optical neural networks (DONNs) have emerged as a particularly promising approach due to their scalability in the neuron number, ultrahigh throughput, and passive low-power operation. Although free-space implementations laid the foundation for DONNs, on-chip implementations were later developed to overcome integration challenges and to enhance compatibility with photo

ChoCallate: a computational pipeline for consensus germline variant calling in genomic sequencing data.

Accurate germline variant calling in non-model and polyploid organisms remains challenging due to sequencing errors, genomic complexity, and caller-specific biases. Existing ensemble methods of variant calling are constrained by species-specific training, limited portability, or an inability to process multiple samples concurrently. To address these limitations we developed ChoCallate, a Nextflow-based pipeline for consensus germline variant calling. The pipeline integrates three species-independent callers, bcftools, FreeBayes, and Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK) HaplotypeCaller, within a flex

A computational dynamics and damping-induced transitions in beam-foundation systems with viscoelastic constraints.

This study examines the vibrational dynamics of elastically constrained beam foundation systems by considering Timoshenko, shear, Rayleigh, and Euler-Bernoulli beam models resting on viscoelastic Filonenko-Borodich and Hetényi foundations. Emphasis is placed on understanding how damping, foundation stiffness, shear deformation, and rotary inertia govern dynamic transitions across undamped, underdamped, and overdamped regimes. Using separation of variables for the analytical solution and the Galerkin finite element method for the numerical solution, non-classical boundary conditions are used fo

Recent Advances in Interactive Fibers: Sensing, Interconnecting, Computing, Feedback, and System Integration.

Clothing, as the second skin of the human body, represents a natural interface for embodied intelligence. As the fundamental building blocks of clothing, fibers provide an intrinsic platform for embedding these functionalities. Interactive fibers transform fabrics from passive coverings into active and intelligent systems by integrating sensing, interconnecting, computing, and feedback capabilities within individual fibers. Here, we present a unified framework for fiber-based interactive systems, including sensing fibers for signal acquisition, interconnecting fibers for transmission, computin

Deep learning-based computational pathology: Technologies, clinical applications, and future directions.

The adoption of whole-slide imaging is establishing a new paradigm in digital pathology. However, the translation of artificial intelligence (AI) from research to clinical practice faces significant hurdles, largely due to a misalignment between algorithmic advances and the practical demands of pathological diagnosis and prognosis. In this review, we propose a dual-perspective framework to systematically bridge this gap by linking core clinical tasks with cutting-edge deep learning methodologies. We present a comprehensive overview of the field from 2020 to 2025, analyzing how architectures su

Advances in Functional Vascular Stents for Cardiovascular Therapy with Drug Delivery and Computational Design.

Vascular stents are crucial devices in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, and their structural design and function critically affect therapeutic efficacy and patient prognosis. Conventional stents can effectively restore vascular patency by providing mechanical support to blood vessels. However, they still face significant challenges including restenosis, thrombosis, and limited adaptability to complex patient-specific lesion characteristics. To address these limitations, drug delivery offers an important strategy to modulate the pathological microenvironment, enhance long-term vascular

Computational exploration of squalene analog 4,4'diapophytofluene as a potential anti-aging phytotherapeutic.

Cellular senescence is a complex biological process characterized by several unique features including cell-cycle arrest, macromolecular damage, secretory phenotypes (SASPs), and deregulated metabolism. These factors are essential for understanding their impact on aging and diseases. Extensive studies on various biochemical pathways associated with mammalian aging have identified SIRT-1, Bcl-xL, Hsp-90, MDM-2, AMPK and mTOR as some key regulatory proteins. So, preserving the functions of these proteins could potentially decelerate the aging process. A previous study had demonstrated that 4,4'-

The Utility of Computed Tomography Angiography and Color Doppler Ultrasound in Lower Extremity Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Lower limb reconstruction remains a significant challenge, often requiring free flap transfers. However, the goal is not only flap survival and limb salvage but ultimately restoration of independent ambulation. Therefore, this study aimed to identify risk factors associated with adverse functional outcomes in lower extremity reconstruction despite initial microsurgical success. METHODS: A retrospective review of all free flaps performed for lower extremity reconstructions in our unit between 2006 and 2022 was undertaken. Apart from demographic details, data collection focused on l

The emerging role of coronary computed tomography for prevention of cardiovascular disease in asymptomatic individuals.

The persistent global rise in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) challenges the effectiveness of current risk factor-based algorithms in primary prevention. Most myocardial infarctions occur in individuals without prior symptoms or recognized standard modifiable risk factors, underscoring the need to improve risk stratification. Coronary CT imaging, including coronary artery calcium scoring (CACS) and coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), enables direct non-invasive visualization of coronary atherosclerosis, supporting a shift from population-based prevention toward pers
