Phobic postural vertigo. Body sway during visually induced roll vection.

Patients with phobic postural vertigo (PPV) often report a particularly increased unsteadiness when looking at moving visual scenes. Therefore, the differential effects of large-field visual motion stimulation in roll plane on body sway during upright stance were analyzed in 23 patients with PPV, who had been selected for the integrity of their vestibular and balance systems, and in 17 healthy subjects. Visual motion stimulation induced a sensation of apparent body motion (roll vection) in all patients and normal subjects. Normal subjects showed an increased lateral sway path with a lateral sh

Perceptual specificity in visual object priming: functional magnetic resonance imaging evidence for a laterality difference in fusiform cortex.

Seeing an object on one occasion may facilitate or prime processing of the same object if it is later again encountered. Such priming may also be found -- but at a reduced level -- for different but perceptually similar objects that are alternative exemplars or 'tokens' of the initially presented object. We explored the neural correlates of this perceptual specificity using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) procedures, contrasting neural activity when participants made object classification decisions (size judgments) regarding previously presented objects (repeated sam

Local and global processing of music in high-functioning persons with autism: beyond central coherence?

A multi-modal abnormality in the integration of parts and whole has been proposed to account for a bias toward local stimuli in individuals with autism (Frith, 1989; Mottron & Belleville, 1993). In the current experiment, we examined the utility of hierarchical models in characterising musical information processing in autistic individuals. Participants were 13 high-functioning individuals with autism and 13 individuals of normal intelligence matched on chronological age, nonverbal IQ, and laterality, and without musical experience. The task consisted of same-different judgements of pairs of m

Impaired processing of complex auditory stimuli in rats with induced cerebrocortical microgyria: An animal model of developmental language disabilities.

Individuals with developmental language disabilities, including developmental dyslexia and specific language impairment (SLI), exhibit impairments in processing rapidly presented auditory stimuli. It has been hypothesized that these deficits are associated with concurrent deficits in speech perception and, in turn, impaired language development. Additionally, postmortem analyses of human dyslexic brains have revealed the presence of focal neocortical malformations such as cerebrocortical microgyria. In an initial study bridging these research domains, we found that male rats with induced micro

Sexually aggressive men's perceptions of women's communications: testing three explanations.

The authors tested three explanations of findings that sexually aggressive men perceive women's communications differently than less aggressive men. The first suggests that aggressors are incompetent in decoding women's negative emotions. The second posits that they fail to make subtle distinctions between women's friendliness and seductiveness and between assertiveness and hostility. The third explanation contends that sexual aggressors use a suspicious schema and therefore discount the veridicality of women's communications. These explanations were tested using videotaped scenarios in which

Functional considerations in the use of procedural timeout and in effective alternative.

Two single-subject experiments were conducted with students in special preschool classes. In Experiment I, the subject's disruptive, appropriate, and inappropriate play behaviors were measured as a function of three independent variables: reinforcement, a typical timeout procedure, and regularly paced teacher instructions. In an ABA reversal within a multiple baseline across two teachers, all three independent variables comprised the A conditions and procedural timeout was omitted in B. Experiment II examined a second subject's appropriate and inappropriate eating as a function of the same thr

Representation of fear memory features in the ventral hippocampus.

Fear memories are essential for adaptive behavior, as they encode salient and emotionally valenced information that enables organisms to anticipate and avoid future threats. Fearful events are experienced as unified representations, even though they consist of multiple features with distributed sensory inputs across space and time that are integrated and imbued with emotional valence. Whether these features are jointly or separately represented by the memory networks in the brain and how such memories guide behavior during novel experiences remains unclear. Here, we use a virtual reality parad

Dopamine release-associated striatal blood oxygenation and whole-brain dynamics during associative learning.

Dopaminergic signaling in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) is central to reward-based learning, but its relationship to brain-wide hemodynamics remains unclear. Using concurrent fMRI and dopamine photometry in awake, behaving mice, we reveal that associative learning induces a gradual temporal shift in NAc blood oxygenation responses that mirrors dopamine release dynamics. This shift emerges with cue-reward learning and extends across a distributed network encompassing the lateral septal complex, as well as prefrontal, insular, and hypothalamic regions. Further, dopamine transients tightly correspo

Structure of the Beat-Side complex reveals their interaction is required for neuromuscular system wiring.

Nervous system assembly is guided by the actions of cell surface receptors. In Drosophila, members of the beaten path (Beat) and sidestep (Side) protein families have been described as axon guidance receptor-cue pairs, in addition to roles in specifying synaptic connectivity in the optic lobe. To understand the molecular basis and specificity of Beat-Side interactions, we report here the structure of a Beat-Side complex, Beat-Vc bound to Side-VI. The structure shows a binding topology similar to other immunoglobulin superfamily receptors, especially PD-1-PD-L1, nectins, SynCAMs, Dprs, and DIPs

Distractor-induced deafness: ERP correlates of auditory distractor processing.

Distractor-induced deafness (DID) refers to the impaired detection of an auditory target when preceded by a rapid sequence of auditory distractors sharing the target's features. We examined whether the neural signatures underlying DID resemble those found in visual distractor-induced blindness (DIB). Participants completed a rapid serial auditory presentation (RSAP) task in which distractor number and cue-target onset asynchrony were systematically manipulated. Behaviorally, target detection declined with increasing distractor number, closely replicating the behavioral DIB effect. Event-relate

Moculus: an immersive virtual reality system for mice incorporating stereo vision.

Due to technical roadblocks, it is unclear how visual circuits represent multiple features or how behaviorally relevant representations are selected for long-term memory. Here we developed Moculus, a head-mounted virtual reality platform for mice that covers the entire visual field, and allows binocular depth perception and full visual immersion. This controllable environment, with three-dimensional (3D) corridors and 3D objects, in combination with 3D acousto-optical imaging, affords rapid visual learning and the uncovering of circuit substrates in one measurement session. Both the control an

A cis-regulatory module underlies retinal ganglion cell genesis and axonogenesis.

Atoh7 is transiently expressed in retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) and is required for retinal ganglion cell (RGC) differentiation. In humans, a deletion in a distal non-coding regulatory region upstream of ATOH7 is associated with optic nerve atrophy and blindness. Here, we functionally interrogate the significance of the Atoh7 regulatory landscape to retinogenesis in mice. Deletion of the Atoh7 enhancer structure leads to RGC deficiency, optic nerve hypoplasia, and retinal blood vascular abnormalities, phenocopying inactivation of Atoh7. Further, loss of the Atoh7 remote enhancer impacts ipsi

The survival grip-how cell adhesion promotes tumor maintenance within the microenvironment.

Cell adhesion is warranted by proteins that are crucial for the maintenance of tissue integrity and homeostasis. Most of these proteins behave as receptors to link adhesion to the control of cell survival and their expression or regulation are often altered in cancers. B-cell malignancies do not evade this principle as they are sustained in relapsed niches by interacting with the microenvironment that includes cells and their secreted factors. Focusing on chronic lymphocytic leukemia and mantle cell lymphoma, this Review delves with the molecules involved in the dialog between the adhesion pla

Lipids from a snail host regulate the multicellular behavior of a predator of parasitic schistosomes.

Transmission of vector-borne diseases can be slowed by symbionts within the secondary hosts that spread disease. Snails spread schistosomiasis, and the snail symbiont Capsaspora owczarzaki kills schistosome larvae. In studying how Capsaspora colonizes its host snail, we discovered that Capsaspora responded to its host by forming multicellular aggregates. We elucidated the chemical cue for aggregation: hemolymph phosphatidylcholines (PCs). Furthermore, we uncovered that Capsaspora cells aggregate to different degrees in sera from different host snails-and these responses correlate with serum co

Image Clarity Affects Tip-of-the-Tongue Rates for Faces.

Tip-of-the-tongue states are subjective experiences that unrecalled target words will be remembered. This study investigates if the visual fluency of familiar faces affects the likelihood of tip-of-the-tongue experiences (TOTs) as well as name recall and name recognition. To manipulate visual fluency, three levels of clarity for 396 celebrity faces were set: high, medium, and low clarity. Four hundred and twenty-nine participants were asked to recall the last names of the celebrities for all clarity levels, and, if they did not recall, to indicate if they experienced a TOT. Following the TOT q

Salivary Gland Development in Culture.

Salivary glands are branching organs which develop by bud and cleft formation to create an organ with a large surface area. The epithelium and mesenchyme signal back and forth to control this branching process, with additional cues provided by the parasympathetic nerves and blood vessels that surround the developing branches. This branching morphogenesis can be recapitulated successfully in organ culture , allowing access to the tissue to follow development and manipulate the tissue interactions, and signals. To culture glands, the filter-grid method has been widely used, allowing the developm

The Subjective Value of Product Popularity: A Neural Account of How Product Popularity Influences Choice Using a Social and a Quality Focus.

Research on social influences often distinguishes between social and quality incentives to ascribe meaning to the value that popularity conveys. This study examines the neural correlates of those incentives through which popularity influences preferences. This research reports an functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment and a behavioral task in which respondents evaluated popular products with three focus perspectives; unspecified focus, focus on social aspects, and focus on quality. The results show that value derived with a social focus reflects inferences of approval and reward valu

Between- and Within-Individual Sociodemographic and Psychological Determinants of PrEP Adherence Among Men Who have Sex with Men Prescribed a Daily PrEP Regimen in Wales.

We investigated the determinants of daily PrEP use and coverage of condomless anal sex (CAS) by PrEP among men who have sex with men in Wales, UK. We measured PrEP use by electronic monitors and CAS by secure online surveys. We defined PrEP use based on daily medication cap openings and coverage as CAS episodes preceded by ≥ 3 days of PrEP use and followed by ≥ 2 days of PrEP use. We included 57 participants (5463 observations). An STI diagnosis was associated with lower PrEP use but also lower PrEP coverage. Older adults had higher PrEP use. A belief that other PrEP users took PrEP as prescri
