A weak electric field (WEF, 2 mA cm-2) was employed to promote Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle on goethite-impregnated activated carbon (FeOOH@AC) filled in a continuous-flow column for enhanced Cr(VI) elimination from water. Surficial analysis and Cr species distribution showed that α-FeOOH of 0.2-1 μm was successfully synthesized and evenly loaded onto AC. Electron transfer from WEF to α-FeOOH was facilitated with AC as electron shuttles, thereby boosting Fe(III) reduction in the α-FeOOH. The generated Fe(II) reduced Cr(VI) and the resultant Cr(III) subsequently precipitated with OH- and Fe(III) to for

BACKGROUND: There is no specific treatment for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) manifesting as pulseless electric activity (PEA) and survival rates are low; unlike ventricular fibrillation (VF), which is treatable by defibrillation. Development of novel treatments requires fundamental clinical studies, but access to the true initial rhythm has been a limiting factor.
METHODS: Using demographics and detailed clinical variables, we trained and tested an AI model (extreme gradient boosting) to differentiate PEA-SCA versus VF-SCA in a novel setting that provided the true initial rhythm. A subgroup of

In individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI), rapid skeletal muscle atrophy and metabolic dysfunction pose profound rehabilitation challenges, often resulting in substantial loss of muscle mass and function. This study evaluates the effect of combined neuromuscular electrical stimulation (Comb-NMES) on skeletal muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and inflammatory signaling within the acute phase of SCI. We applied a novel Comb-NMES regimen, integrating both high-frequency resistance and low-frequency aerobic protocols on the vastus lateralis muscle, to participants early post-SCI. Muscle biops

Engineered heart tissues (EHTs) built from human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) showed promising results for cardiac function restoration following myocardial infarction. Nevertheless, human iPSC-CMs have longer action potential and lower cell-to-cell coupling than adult-like CMs. These immature electrophysiological properties favor arrhythmias due to the generation of electrophysiological gradients when hiPSC-CMs are injected in the cardiac tissue. Culturing hiPSC-CMs on three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds can promote their maturation and influence their alignme

BACKGROUND: Some anesthetic drugs reduce the amplitude of transcranial electrical motor-evoked potentials (MEPs). Remimazolam, a new benzodiazepine, has been suggested to have little effect on MEP amplitude. This prospective, preliminary, dose-escalation study aimed to assess whether remimazolam is associated with lower MEP amplitude in a dose-dependent manner.
METHODS: Ten adult patients scheduled for posterior spinal fusion were included in this study. General anesthesia was induced with a continuous infusion of remifentanil and remimazolam. After the patient lost consciousness, the infusio

The separation of the two rectus abdominis muscles along the linea alba is termed diastasis of recti abdominis muscles (DRAM). DRAM is a common health problem in people that are both pregnant and postpartum. With a 100% frequency at gestational week 35, it is extremely frequent during pregnancy. Control and function of the trunk are greatly influenced by the musculature of the abdomen. The existence, extent, and duration of DRAM have been connected to low back and pelvic discomfort however the relationship is not conclusive. It has been proven to weaken abdominal muscles and impair their funct

BACKGROUND: Peripheral electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) reportedly improves cardiac function after myocardial ischemia (MI) by rebalancing the cardiac autonomic nervous system. The dynamic and continuous influence of PENS on autonomic and cardiac function based on cardiac self-repair is not well understood.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the relationship between autonomic nervous balance and functional cardiac repair after MI and to clarify the optimal acupoint selection and time course for PENS.
METHODS: The activities of the superior cervical cardiac sympathetic nerve and vagus

After esophagectomy, an imbalanced inflammatory response increases the risk of postoperative morbidity. The vagus nerve modulates local and systemic inflammatory responses, but its pulmonary branches are transected during esophagectomy as part of the oncological resection, which may account for the high incidence of postoperative (pulmonary) complications. This study investigated the effect of electrical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung injury in rats. Rats (n = 60) were randomly assigned to a non-vagotomy or cervical vagotomy group, with VNS or without (N

INTRODUCTION: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is clinically useful for treating epilepsy, depression, and chronic pain. Currently, cervical VNS (cVNS) treatment is well-established, while auricular VNS (aVNS) is under development. Vagal stimulation regulates functions in diverse brain regions; therefore, it is critical to better understand how electrically-evoked vagal inputs following cVNS and aVNS engage with different brain regions.
OBJECTIVE: As vagus inputs are predominantly transmitted to the nucleus of tractus solitarius (NTS), we directly compared the activation of NTS neurons by cVNS o

Background and study aims Endoscopic ultrasound-guided biopsy via fine-needle biopsy/fine-needle aspiration (FNB/FNA) is currently the standard method to sample tumors in the mediastinum and abdomen. Although specimens obtained with these needles are acceptable, a histological diagnosis is not always possible. Recently, a new EUS-guided core needle biopsy (EUS-CNB) device became available. Herein, we describe the first experience with its use in a transmural fashion. Patients and methods This was a case series of patients who underwent EUS-CNB at an academic center. All patients provided writt

Healthy aging leads to poorer performance in upper limb (UL) daily living movements. Understanding the neural correlates linked with UL functional movements may help to better understand how healthy aging affects motor control. Two non-invasive neuroimaging methods allow for monitoring the movement-related brain activity: functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG), respectively based on the hemodynamic response and electrical activity of brain regions. Coupled, they provide a better spatiotemporal mapping. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal electrical stimulation of the dorsal anterior mucosal surface of the tongue has demonstrated its efficacy in a variety of neurological disorders in which anatomical or functional alterations are present. The pathogenesis of such disorders is often linked to altered arousal circuits, and the benefits of tongue stimulation are attributed to the rebalancing of this system. Dental ULFTENS shows efficacy in acting on the muscular, autonomic system and control of the descending pathways that modulate pain. It is administered at the skin level in the area anterior to the tragus

Transspinal direct current stimulation (tsDCS) is a non-invasive technique used to modulate spinal cord activity. However, the effects and mechanisms of this stimulation are currently not comprehensively known. This study aimed to estimate the effect of different intensities of tsDCS applied at the level of cervical enlargement of the spinal cord (C7-Th1 segments) on the excitability of the corticospinal system (CSS) and the correction of motor skills in healthy subjects. The effect of tsDCS was estimated by the motor-evoked potentials (MEP) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

Mind wandering (MW) is a heterogeneous construct involving task-unrelated thoughts. Recently, the interest in modulating MW propensity via non-invasive brain stimulation techniques has increased. Single-session transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in healthy controls has led to mixed results in modulating MW propensity, possibly due to methodological heterogeneity. Therefore, our aim was to conduct a systematic meta-analysis to examine the influence of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) and right inferior parietal lobule (rIPL) targeted tDCS on MW propensity. Importantly, b
