Scalable nanofocusing heterojunctions for raptor-inspired on-chip vision perception.

Biological visual systems provide a blueprint for intelligent perception in complex dynamic environments. Inspired by the optical role of retinal oil droplets in raptor vision, we report a plasmonic nanofocusing synaptic array (PNSA) for bioinspired visual sensing and motion perception. The pivotal design is a wafer-scale Au@MoS2 core-shell heterojunction that enhances light concentration like the retinal oil droplets of raptors. Leveraging strong localized surface plasmon resonance in the Au core and efficient hot-carrier generation in the MoS2 shell, the PNSA exhibits an ultrafast relaxation

Potential airborne transmission of SARS-COV-2 through bathroom ventilation ducts associated with an outbreak in a residential building in Santander, Spain, 2020.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via respiratory aerosols was a critical concern in indoor environments. In the city of Santander, Spain, an outbreak in a multi-family residential building during a period of low community transmission revealed vertical clustering of 15 cases in four homes. The building's design included single interior bathrooms without windows in each home, ventilated by a shared vertical bathroom duct system. Field measurements, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and multi-zone airflow modeling were performed to evaluate vertical

A grounded theory study in blended learning of the facilitation of role transition from compliant learners to collaborative partners regarding non-verbal behavior.

BACKGROUND: In blended learning environments, college students often remain silent in face-to-face classrooms yet actively engage in online collaborative settings. This gap reflects a shift in learner identity from "compliant learners" to "collaborative partners." However, little is known about how non-verbal behaviors drive this identity transition. METHODS: This study employed a grounded theory approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 college students, supplemented by WeChat chat logs and collaborative document revision histories, and analyzed using three-level codi

Climate-resilient wastewater phytoremediation for pollutant removal and resource recovery.

Wastewater treatment plants use technologies that are designed only for contaminant degradation and do not focus on resource recovery, defying the circular economy approach. Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly and sustainable technology that is cost-effective and low on energy consumption. It utilizes the innate ability of plants to sequester pollutants and assimilate them in their biomass. This technique has long been integrated with constructed wetland systems to treat wastewater and has been successful in the natural elimination of pollutants. However, the disposal of post-phytoremediation

Synthesis of Patchy Particles at Phase Boundaries.

Functional patchy particles, distinguishing themselves from isotropic colloids through different discrete surface domains, are critical for advanced applications such as colloidal assembly, catalysis, and biomedical purposes. In this review, we focus on the elaboration of patchy particles, categorizing the different synthesis strategies based on the specific interfacial environments employed to induce asymmetry. Recent advances, as a function of the various interfacial constraints, are reviewed: (1) solid-gas interfaces, which exploit physical shadowing for directional deposition; (2) liquid-g

Helical morphology-inspired bistable gripper for UAV upward perching and grasping in field environment.

There is a growing interest in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) being able to perch onto objects, which expands their scope of applications. Many perching strategies are inspired by natural organisms, including birds, insects, and helical morphologies such as tendrils and tails. Inspired by these helical structures, a bistable hybrid gripper is developed that enables a quadcopter to perch on branches and perform aerial grasping. The gripper integrates a bistable steel shell (BSS) as the stiff element, analogous to skeletal support, with a soft 3D-printed helical exoskeleton, analogous to muscul

Curvature-Variable Image Sensor Array with Mo2TiC2Tx MXene for Dark-field Multiview 3D Reconstruction Application.

Curved image sensors hold great appeal in intelligent artificial vision systems, yet current sensor curving techniques still suffer from certain limitations. Taking inspiration from the cuttability and wrap-like transferability of paper-based electronics in three-dimensional curvy architecture and matched hydrophilic functional materials, we propose an image sensor with variable curvature through a vacuum filtration and folding-pasting process assisted by a thermal release tape mask. This method enables the uniform, patterned, hierarchical, and damage-free integration of Mo2TiC2Tx and silver n

How to evaluate aromaticity under pressure? Benzene as a benchmark system.

Aromaticity is a fundamental concept in chemistry, central to understanding chemical stability, reactivity, and electronic structure. While traditionally examined under ambient conditions, recent studies have begun to probe its behavior in unconventional regimes, reflecting the diversification of reaction environments. Here, we investigate aromaticity under hydrostatic pressure, extending the range of external perturbations considered so far in aromaticity research. Using state-of-the-art quantum chemical methodologies designed to simulate pressure at the single-molecule level, we systematical

Water engineering via surfactant coacervates enables efficient and robust solar hydrogen evolution.

Water is essential in photosynthesis, acting both as a reactant and a medium regulating charge transport and reaction kinetics. While catalyst design has received significant attention, the impact of water structure on reactivity remains almost unexplored. Here, we report that water engineering via surfactant coacervates can significantly improve the performance of artificial photosynthesis for hydrogen production. By creating dynamic aqueous coacervate phases within a disrupted hydrogen-bond network, we create environments that yield more active, disordered water molecules. This tuned water s

Modern Quantum Chemistry Methodology for Predicting 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Chemical Shifts.

Phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (31P NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful analytical physical chemistry experimental technique that is widely used to study the structure and dynamics of phosphorus-containing compounds today. Accurate calculation of 31P NMR chemical shifts lies in the basis of the proper assignment of NMR signals, as they can be closely spaced to each other in the NMR spectra of systems that bear nuclei with subtly different electron environments, like complex organophosphorus compounds, nucleic acids, and phosphates, etc. The most advanced quantum chemistry (QC) methods al
