Air pollution and mortality for cancer of the respiratory system in Italy: an explainable artificial intelligence approach.

Respiratory system cancer, encompassing lung, trachea and bronchus cancer, constitute a substantial and evolving public health challenge. Since pollution plays a prominent cause in the development of this disease, identifying which substances are most harmful is fundamental for implementing policies aimed at reducing exposure to these substances. We propose an approach based on explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) based on remote sensing data to identify the factors that most influence the prediction of the standard mortality ratio (SMR) for respiratory system cancer in the Italian provin

The effect of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution on health inequality: an intergenerational perspective.

Air pollution poses a serious challenge to public health and simultaneously exacerbating regional & intergenerational health inequality. This research introduces PM2.5 pollution into the intergenerational health transmission model, and estimates its impact on health inequality in China using Ordered Logit Regression (OLR) and Multi-scale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) model. The results indicate that PM2.5 pollution exacerbate the intergenerational health inequality, and its impacts show inconsistency across family income levels, parental health insurance status, and area of residen

An Improved Air Health Index Based on Short-Term Cardiovascular Effects in Tianjin, China.

OBJECTIVES: To construct an improved air health index (AHI) based on cardiovascular years of life lost (YLL) in Tianjin and assess its utility. METHODS: We derived the exposure-response coefficients from time-series models and calculated the excess YLL (EYLL) for simultaneous exposure to air pollution and non-optimum temperature. The AHI was developed using the EYLL at the WHO 2021 Air Quality Guideline annual mean values and optimum temperature as a reference. We assessed the validity of AHI by comparing the correlations and model fit between the AHI, air quality health index (AQHI), and air

Regionalization of the Mortality Risk from Cardiomyopathy and Respiratory Diseases Based on the Maximum Entropy Model.

This research presents a time-series study in one of the most polluted regions in Mexico, the southern part of the Mezquital Valley. Three mortality causes related to areas highly contaminated by industrial activities were considered to carry out this model, namely, ischemic cardiomyopathy, mesothelioma, and pneumoconiosis. The pollutant exposure factors used in the maximum entropy modeling were distance to rivers, distance to industries, particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM < 2.5 µm), and the digital elevation model (DEM). A model that expresses the presence of the disease by areas of

Fires as a source of annual ambient PM2.5 exposure and chronic health impacts in Europe.

Chronic exposure to ambient PM2.5 is the largest environmental health risk in Europe. We used a chemical transport model and recent exposure response functions to simulate ambient PM2.5, contribution from fires and related health impacts over Europe from 1990 to 2019. Our estimation indicates that the excess death burden from exposure to ambient PM2.5 declined across Europe at a rate of 10,000 deaths per year, from 0.57 million (95 % confidence intervals: 0.44-0.75 million) in 1990 to 0.28 million (0.19-0.42 million) in the specified period. Among these excess deaths, approximately 99 % were a

Estimating the risks of exposure to harmful algal toxins among Scottish harbour seals.

Harmful algal bloom (HAB) toxins consumed by marine predators through fish prey can be lethal but studies on the resulting population consequences are lacking. Over the past approximately 20 years there have been large regional declines in some harbour seal populations around Scotland. Analyses of excreta (faeces and urine from live and dead seals and faecal samples from seal haulout sites) suggest widespread exposure to toxins through the ingestion of contaminated prey. A risk assessment model, incorporating concentrations of the two major HAB toxins found in seal prey around Scotland (domoic

Urban environment during pregnancy and lung function, wheezing, and asthma in school-age children. The generation R study.

The urban environment during pregnancy may influence child's respiratory health, but scarce evidence exists on systematic evaluation of multiple urban exposures (e.g., air pollution, natural spaces, noise, built environment) on children's lung function, wheezing, and asthma development. We aimed to examine the association of the urban environment during pregnancy with lung function, preschool wheezing, and school-age asthma. We included 5624 mother-child pairs participating in a population-based prospective birth cohort. We estimated 30 urban environmental exposures including air pollution, ro

Association of ambient air pollution with hemoglobin levels and anemia in the general population of Korean adults.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence has suggested significant associations between ambient air pollution and changes in hemoglobin levels or anemia in specific vulnerable groups, but few studies have assessed this relationship in the general population. This study aimed to evaluate the association between long-term exposure to air pollution and hemoglobin concentrations or anemia in general adults in South Korea. METHODS: A total of 69,830 Korean adults from a large-scale nationwide survey were selected for our final analysis. Air pollutants included particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter

Impacts from air pollution on respiratory disease outcomes: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Air pollution is widely acknowledged as a significant factor in respiratory outcomes, including coughing, wheezing, emergency department (ED) visits, and even death. Although several literature reviews have confirmed the association between air pollution and respiratory outcomes, they often did not standardize associations across different studies and overlooked other increasingly impactful pollutants such as trace metals. Recognizing the importance of consistent comparison and emissions of non-exhaust particles from road traffic, this study aims to comprehensively evaluate the s

Noise and Air Pollution as Risk Factors for Hypertension: Part II-Pathophysiologic Insight.

Traffic noise and air pollution are environmental stressors found to increase risk for cardiovascular events. The burden of disease attributable to environmental stressors and cardiovascular disease globally is substantial, with a need to better understand the contribution of specific risk factors that may underlie these effects. Epidemiological observations and experimental evidence from animal models and human controlled exposure studies suggest an essential role for common mediating pathways. These include sympathovagal imbalance, endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation, increased ci

Global ambient particulate matter pollution and neurodegenerative disorders: a systematic review of literature and meta-analysis.

Previous studies on particulate matter (PM) exposure and neurodegenerative disorders showed inconsistent results, and few studies systematically examined the long-term effect of PM on neurodegenerative diseases, including all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, vascular dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and cognitive function decline. We systematically searched for published studies in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science up to October 31, 2022. To facilitate a comparison of effect sizes from different studies, we standardized units across studies t
